Around 1.5 million Indian Army soldiers served alongside British troops during the First World War. More than 74,000 lost their lives. Hundreds of wounded Indian troops were hospitalised in the English town of Brighton, in sites such as the Royal Pavilion. The Hindus and Sikhs who died were cremated on the Sussex Downs and, in 1921, the Chattri memorial was constructed on the cremation site.

On August 15, 1947, after 150 years under British rule, India gained independence. Gandhi and Nehru earned their place in the history books. But few mention Subhas Chandra Bose who solicited Adolf Hitler's help in liberating India from colonial rule. Our reporters have been finding out more.
