It feels great to finally look at regular troops carrying a modern rifle with picatinny. Now they need to make sights as standard, and upgrade infantry gear for all troops, not only the ones at the LOC. In case war happens, we can't just rely on just 1.5 lakh modern infantry who are already forward posted. We will need 7-8 lakh well equipped infantry manning both fronts.

Both will need to be procured. Sig 716 will operate both as a DMR and regular assault rifle, so the red dot sights will also be given to a section of troops for quick reaction.

Wonder how many more years it'll be before the entirety of IA switches over to ACHs. Probably not before 2025. It's just pathetic to look at those old helmets.

Has to be. AR-10 has a buffer that you won't find on the old SLRs or even OFB R2 rifle. Helps reduce felt recoil...at the expense of not being able to fold the stock.

990 dollars per piece for our deal. Retail price is approx $2100-2300.

SIG's high-end is a very expensive platform. But due to competitive bidding, we are able to get them for 990 a piece which is frankly a steal for a piston-driven AR-10 from name-brand manufacturer.

AK203 on other hand has rip-off pricing...we are buying in tremendous bulk and still paying pretty much retail price + a premium.

By the way, it appears our 716s are customized quite a bit (not regular off-the-shelf 716G2 Patrols).

For starters the full-length MLOK handguard is taken from the SIG 716 TREAD variant (a recent addition to SIG's 2020 catalog):

I much prefer this handguard to the Patrol's original, bulkier one. The TREAD version is visibly much easier to C-clamp.

However we seen to have gone with the Magpul CTR stock instead of the TREAD's Magpul SL-K.

1. The common infantry of IA is trained with traditional Soviet style firing position rather than C-clamp grip. It's indeed true that C-clamp nowdays is in vogue with firearm enthusiasts but since when we (IA) started being proactive in adopting these latest emerging trends around the world ?
2. Long rail will limit the access to gas regulator; AFAIK, G2 has three position has regulator.
3. The long rail will facilitate mounting bi-pod along with fore grip; it also means that IA intend to use it as dual DMR/Assault rifle role. But the big question is whether all these possibilities associated with long rail will be exploited by IA by issuing these attachments as standard?

I just realized that the TREAD 716 is a direct-impingement weapon, no piston! And the handguard is designed for that.

This could imply that the 716 we are getting is not a short-stroke gas piston, rather a direct impingement model.

That's a pretty big distinction.

I may be wrong but have a feeling that the exact numbers of purchase are never disclosed. I feel that we may end up giving follow up orders for more SIGs .Also after watching yesterday's battle cry episode the decision to have different rifles does makes sense. But, drawbacks like this will be a logistical nightmare with different ammo still persist. May be its something that army accepted to go with.

So these images just dropped. Those are Indian Army soldiers at the Infantry School in central India with their brand new U.S. built SIG716 G2 Patrol assault/battlefield rifles. Seen here on Livefist for the first time since the new firearms began arriving in December, maker Sig Sauer Inc. will complete deliveries of 72,400 of these by the end of this year.

The Indian Army ordered the SIG716 last February as part of a wider, urgent, effort to bring new assault weapons into its infantry units quickly, while sidestepping the traditional curse of piecemeal, stopgap purchases of the past. As Livefist has reported, the new SIG716 rifles are part of a two-pronged procurement drive. While these rifles will be sent to priority units deployed in counter-insurgency and frontier anti-terror roles, a requirement of nearly 700,000 new assault rifles for regular infantry units will be met by the Kalashnikov AK-203. After some delays, and with paperwork in place, an order for the AK-203 could finally come this year. The rifles are to be manufactured in country at a joint venture facility of Kalashnikov and India’s Ordnance Factor Board at Korwa in U.P.’s Amethi.

The SIG716 G2 Patrol is an enhanced assault rifle featuring a 16-inch barrel, M-LOK handguard, and a 6-position telescoping stock. The weapons are being supplied to the Indian Army from Sig Sauer’s facility in New Hampsire, U.S.

“The global importance of this contract for SIG SAUER is far reaching based on the size, location, and economic strength of India in the global market,” says Ron Cohen, President and CEO, SIG SAUER, Inc. “We are very proud, and honored that the SIG716 was chosen for use by the fighting forces of the Indian Army, and we are looking forward to developing a strong partnership with India’s Ministry of Defense.”

“This [was] the first large firearms procurement of the Indian Government in decades, and the explicit mission for this tender was to modernize the infantry troopers of the Indian Army with the best rifle available,” said Cohen last February. “We competed in an open tender with small arms manufacturers from around the world. The SIG716 rifle underwent a comprehensive and exhaustive testing and evaluation process where it outperformed the competition, and was ultimately chosen, and met all the criteria, as the best rifle to modernize the Indian Army.”

The SIG716 isn’t the only American-built firearm in the Army’s inventory. The Para Special Forces have inducted unspecified numbers of the M4A1 carbine for years and have recently begun receiving Barrett M95 purpose built sniper rifles (in addition to the Italian Victrix Minerva Scorpio TGT.) The Indian government is also expected to conclude a delayed order for 93,385 CAR816 carbines from UAE firm Caracal this year.

Now it's very much clear that how come SIG bring down the price to such a low level. Welcome to the era of DI in Indian Armed forces !! Even though it has lowest recoil among other loading system, it is yet to be seen how we gonna cope up with fouling brought by low quality ammunition. Short stroke would have been a better balance for managing recoil of 7.62 round on one hand and taking on the fouling and dirt/dusty environment of the field on the other. Hoping that CAR 816 hasn't opted for DI in indian carbine tender.

Yes,these are DI versions of SIG rifles in 7.62 NATO

I think one reason we opted for DI based AR was high recoil on Short Stroke system with 7.62 NATO,and possible muzzle climb // carrier tilt things,though on full auto same issues would persist with this riphul,too!

Standard TREAD is 5.56.This hybrid model also has cooling holes all the way along the handguard- an improvement.It also has different buttstock.

Nobody's saying its an M400 TREAD.

TREAD is not one gun. It's a line of offerings that includes 716 TREAD in 7.62x51 Nato. Look at SIG's 2020 catalog on their website, that's where this pic is from -

^^ You can clearly see calibre written. And yes this is exact same handguard as Indian Army has on our 716s. TREAD 716 however comes with Magpul SL-K stock whereas our's comes with Magpul CTR stock - I've already made that distinction both here and on Twitter.

Those are not DMR variant, they are battle rifles, DMR variants, the barrel is longer and has a different muzzle.
