Indian army officer arrested for looting gold

An Indian army officer has been arrested for looting smuggled gold in the north-eastern state of Mizoram.
He is accused of directing his men to loot gold worth 140m rupees ($2.1m;£1.8m) that was being smuggled into Mizoram from Myanmar in December last year.
The police official told BBC Hindi that eight other army personnel were also arrested from the state's capital Aizawl for their role in the robbery.
The Indian army has also started its own investigation into the matter.

I won't jump the gun yet. Innocent unless proven guilty. Let the investigations complete. I am saying this because the driver of the vehicle (that was used for smuggling) is the one who filed the complaint.

As per reports coming out the good Colonel and his men were under the radar of the cops for nearly 2 months.

When Lalnunfela lodged the FIR, police acted swiftly, and within two weeks, a Special Investigation Team led by the Crime Branch’s additional superintendent of police had arrested almost all those suspected to be involved in the case. The first to be held were well-known government-supplier Bulaki Chand Baid and former Mizoram Students’ Assoiation leader Lalmuanawma Mathipi. Three men in Mathipi’s employ were next to be held, of whom one was released for lack of evidence.

Police next began grilling personnel of the 39th battalion of the Assam Rifles. A team of Military Intelligence officials, led by a colonel, arrived from the 3 Corps base in Dimapur, Nagaland, to join the interrogation. On May 4, after more than a week of questioning, eight Assam Rifles personnel — one naik subedar, three havildars and three sepoys — were placed under arrest. The same day, the SIT asked Colonel Jasjit Singh to appear before it for questioning. A judicial magistrate also issued an arrest warrant against Singh.

I heard this same thing from my friend, but i asked some tough questions which he could not answer, nor was he too interested.

Tell me why would a Colonel use sophisticated weapons and not just AK'S as normal Millitants use? To cover up their tracks?
