friends all the news and articles refer to 2007 after that period a lot of changes have taken place firstly the SCO has objected towards the ayni air-base and china has gone all out against the development and managed to get russia act,
the problem is that the base is still there and its functional but not as planned its acting like a relief and rescue base rather than a strike and counter strike base,
some points that needs to be paid attention is that there are no mig 29,s stationed there, the logistics for the operation was supposed to be supplied by russia as india wont have access to land locked tajikistan and russia seems to have acted on the lines of the SCO,
if india joins the SCO they can have a functional strike base there as of now china has managed to neutralize it diplomatically
about the other base 130 km from the tajik capital its under the military command and it will still take some more time to develop

i will try and give some functional pictures of the area.

Isn't joining SCO effectively means we accept China as a bigger power?

China is pretty much controlling SCO.

447874 trees planted in 24 hrs, army makes Guinness record

13 Jun 2009, 2236 hrs IST, TNN

GUWAHATI: The Indian Army has scripted a world record by planting 4,47,874 saplings in 24 hours in an area of 200 hectares in the Srigram area of Dhubri district on Saturday. The previous record was created in Mexico's Durango where 3,48,492 trees were planted on 179 hectares in September, 2008.

About 300 soldiers of the 21 Jat Regiment undertook the plantation drive at 3.30 am on Friday. The plantation was stopped for the night. On Saturday plantation resumed at 3.30 am and ended at 3.30 pm. "Planting 4,47,874 is a world record that even surpassed Mexico's by nearly a one lakh margin. We will now prepare a detailed report and send it to the Guinness Book of World Records in order to get the certificate," said Gauhati University's Bimal Kumar Kar, one of the four independent observers. The state forest department provided the saplings to the army.

It was jubilation time in Dhubri as soldiers celebrated their achievement. "Our target was to plant five lakh saplings. But 4,47,874 is still a world record. It is an outcome of nearly nine months of vigorous training, motivating and experimenting," a senior army officer told TOI on Saturday.

In July 2008, the 21 Jat Regiment planted 25,000 saplings around the Mahamaya reserve forest, followed by the plantation of 50,000 more saplings at Srigram on the occasion of World Military Games.

"From these plantations, we gathered a lot of experience and were confident that the army could embark on a world record breaking plantation drive. We meticulously planned the drive," the army official said. Prior to Mexico's record, Chautaki, a nondescript village in Assam's Bongaigaon district, had entered the Guinness Book by planting 2,84,000 saplings on 31.5 hectares in July, 2008.

Congrats to the army. Wish the army could do something in Bangalore. The trees have all vanished. We need help urgently.

Good job.

Planting is fine, what about the huge task of watering the same so that these trees don't die!

I wonder how that will be organised.

The effort should not go wasted.

Perhaps doing something other than following a world record would be better, not the best use for our nations resources.

As long as they are going to maintain them it is not a waste of national resources. Actually we need to do more of it and plant as many as possible.:113:

If the army is doing this, then in my eyes it is a waste.

The condition in India is not exactly disaster standards to justify mobilise military resources, there are many agencies and organisations that should handle these things.

Yes we need to plant more trees in the forests and in our cities, they do so much for us.

Army chasing a world record in planting trees just does not sound right in the same sentence, utilising fewer products like paper would be good enough.

It especially bothers me to read such comments

So Indian Army has achived yet another milestone in by covering Miles of territory with lakhs of sapling. Our country is fast running the risk of water crisis, because of fluctuating amount of rainfall, at the same time this is huge service in favour of lending hand against Global Warming.

Congratulations to Indian Army and 21 Jat Regiment soldiers who have done an impossible task.

Irony is that, our Media don't have enough space to publish and telecast something like this which has glorified India's name worldwide

When you are in the army, its a fun life. Doing such exercises always helps bonding between the men and also help gain political mileage and goodwill from the people of Assam. Don't forget, people in the NE tend to "not like" the army. So, a few uppity points in the popularity ratings always helps.

NE India will remember this for some time to come. Helps forget all those bomb blasts etc. Don't expect the army to plant trees in Delhi or Bangalore because of this.

Shouldn't this be the job of the civic agencies or better the CISF's much touted green task force ??
No doubt a mean feat, but such would be nice to hear from agencies actually created for this purpose.

Kuku,

Actually, Counter Insurgency or terrorist attacks management are also NOT strictly an army job. The politicians, govt and the police should not allow it to escalate to what it becomes. But then…..

The Army is called in.

There is the Naxal problem in Chatisgarh.

What happens?

The Army is called in to advice.

There are floods and natural calamities and India has a Disaster Management Organisation, but what happen?

The Army is called in.

I agree the Army should not be called in, but it has become a practice to call it in wherever there is a problem.

The Army I don’t think was chasing records. It could have been purely incidental. Having broken a record, the CO is bragging!

Are you aware that the Army has ‘greened’ Kutch and are also saving the wild asses of Gujarat? And that it worked hard to prevent the Sheiks and Kings of the Middle East from shooting the endangered bustards in Gujarat, which the politicians turned a blind eye to?

I agree the Army should not do it, but then, the Army possibly is the only force that has the will, discipline and organisation to serve the country in all its requirement.

The Army is grateful for the faith that the Nation bestows on it and they will serve it well to their last drop of sweat and last drop of blood!

Well nine months of training for a PR excercise, phew money well spent.
