this is really brilliant. extending goodwill fosters better relations and its a good strategic move.
Perhaps doing something other than following a world record would be better, not the best use for our nations resources."From these plantations, we gathered a lot of experience and were confident that the army could embark on a world record breaking plantation drive. We meticulously planned the drive," the army official said. Prior to Mexico's record, Chautaki, a nondescript village in Assam's Bongaigaon district, had entered the Guinness Book by planting 2,84,000 saplings on 31.5 hectares in July, 2008.
As long as they are going to maintain them it is not a waste of national resources. Actually we need to do more of it and plant as many as possible.:113:Perhaps doing something other than following a world record would be better, not the best use for our nations resources.
If the army is doing this, then in my eyes it is a waste. As long as they are going to maintain them it is not a waste of national resources. Actually we need to do more of it and plant as many as possible.:113:
Is their nothing else for them to do?"From these plantations, we gathered a lot of experience and were confident that the army could embark on a world record breaking plantation drive. We meticulously planned the drive," the army official said.

The condition in India is not exactly disaster standards to justify mobilise military resources, there are many agencies and organisations that should handle these things.
Yes we need to plant more trees in the forests and in our cities, they do so much for us.
Army chasing a world record in planting trees just does not sound right in the same sentence, utilising fewer products like paper would be good enough.
It especially bothers me to read such comments
Is their nothing else for them to do?
Shouldn't this be the job of the civic agencies or better the CISF's much touted green task force ??Jat regiment planting trees "Our target was to plant five lakh saplings. But 4,47,874 is still a world record. It is an outcome of nearly nine months of vigorous training, motivating and experimenting"

Well nine months of training for a PR excercise, phew money well spent. When you are in the army, its a fun life. Doing such exercises always helps bonding between the men and also help gain political mileage and goodwill from the people of Assam. Don't forget, people in the NE tend to "not like" the army. So, a few uppity points in the popularity ratings always helps.
NE India will remember this for some time to come. Helps forget all those bomb blasts etc. Don't expect the army to plant trees in Delhi or Bangalore because of this.
