Armed Forces facing a shortage of 9,362 officers: Ministry of Defence

Army has a shortage of 7,476 officers and 97,177 soldiers including Junior Commissioned Officers.

The three services are facing a shortage of 9,362 officers and around 1.13 lakh soldiers, airmen and sailors, according to details provided by the government on Monday.

In response to a question in Rajya Sabha, minister of state for defence Ajay Bhatt said that the Army has a shortage of 7,476 officers and 97,177 soldiers including Junior Commissioned Officers.

According to details provided by Mr Bhatt, the Navy has a shortage of 1,265 officers and 11,166 sailors.

In the Indian Air Force, the number of posts of officers lying vacant is 621 while it is 4,850 for airmen.

"It is the endeavour of the government to fill up the vacancies in the armed forces in a systematic and time-bound manner, which is a continuous process," the minister said.

Mr Bhatt said, at present, 53,569 officers and 11,35,799 soldiers are serving the Indian Army.

The number of officers serving in the Navy is 11,100 while the strength of sailors is 63,515, he said.

In the Indian Air Force, the number of officers is 12,048 and while that of airmen is 1,38,792.

To a separate question on whether the Defence Ministry has abandoned the idea of having Republic Day Parade on January 26 in Rajpath because of construction activities, he said, "No".

This is the perfect excuse to mechanize our forces and announce a downsizing of manpower and replacing them with technology instead. What do you guys think?

Then why the hell did they create the Vice-CDS position if this was going to be the plan? Isn't Vice supposed to succeed the principle position for any reason?

Make no mistake, I fully support Gen. Manoj Naravane's candidature (he is smart, quiet & focuses on getting things done), but then what happens to Air Marshal Balabhadra Radha Krishna? Him reporting to Naravane does not make sense.

Also sometimes shortfalls are deliberately kept when there is not enough budget to pay/maintain them. CAPFs, Railways, businesses and organisations regularly do this when they have to prioritise funds for other more important things that are more important and urgent.

Indian Army has taken up case with MEA for absorption of some Afghan Army personnel who want to stay back in India (they were here for training), under ITEC and ICCR scholarships.
So we can now recruit persecuted Afghans and form an SFF-kind of the specialized battalion for covert-ops in Afghanistan and Balochistan ?

Doubt that we would probably just incorporate them in existing structure
That will be the current use-case, similar to how Tibetians are recruited in normal regiments. But we can cherry-pick motivated individuals and form a special group.
Maybe we can start more recruitment from Afghanistan on the clause of giving them citizenship in India if they join the Indian armed forces, something similar to how we recruit Nepali Gorkhas.

Yep. Foot soldiers (infantry) only. Recruit mainly for non-Officer positions, only few Afghan officers. There are no 100% homogenous regiments these days, there is always a mix. So it will be like 50% Afghanis, 50% Sikhs/Jats, led by Indian officers.

Afghanis are accustomed to living in cold-Arid mountainous deserts which is exactly the terrain we will be facing if we try to capture PoK (Gilgic-Baltic region), as well as Ladakh.
