Mortal remains of non-commissioned officer recovered 45 years after IAF plane crash | idrw.org

Jagmail Singh of the Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers was found after a period of 45 years and six months from the crash, a defence release said on Saturday.

Over 45 years after the crash of an IAF AN-12 transport aircraft on a flight to Leh from here, the mortal remains of a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) — the fifth of the 102 on board — has been recovered.

An expedition of the Dogra Scouts of Western Command on August 22 recovered the mortal remains of NCO Hav. Jagmail Singh of the Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers was found after a period of 45 years and six months from the crash, a defence release said on Saturday.

The identity of the deceased was established by an identity disk, an insurance policy and a letter from his family, which was retrieved from his pocket, the release said.

The mortal remains of the NCO, are expected to be brought to Chandi Mandir Military Station later on Saturday from where they will be taken to his native place in Meerpur village of Rewari district in Haryana for last rites with full military honours.

The release said that on a freezing February morning in 1968, as dawn broke over Chandigarh, an AN-12 transport aircraft took off from the fog-enveloped runway and headed towards Leh.

On board were 98 army personnel and four crew members on their way to join their duties.

Halfway to Leh, the pilot, Flt Lt HK Singh, decided to turn back due to inclement weather over Jammu and Kashmir.

The aircraft last made radio contact near Rohtang Pass and thereafter appeared to have vanished into thin air, the release said.

The disappearance of the aircraft remained a mystery till 2003 when the debris of the ill-fated plane was accidentally discovered by an expedition in the Dhakka Glacier, high in the Chander Bhaga Ranges of Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh.

The release said that since then, and over the course of three search missions till 2009, four bodies had been recovered.

On August 16 of this year, Indian Army embarked on another expedition to try and locate the mortal remains of the remaining personnel on board the flight and recover the Flight Data Recorder (Black Box).

The expedition by the Dogra Scouts comprised the finest mountaineers of the country including an 'Everester', the release said.

The glacier where the search operations are underway lies at an altitude of approximately 17,000-18,000ft and is avalanche prone and dotted with innumerable crevasses.

The site itself is at an 80 degree gradient from the base camp, the release added.

High wind velocities and sub-zero temperatures restricts the search window to about 15-20 days a year and that too only for a few hours during the day.

Braving all odds and in the face of extremely hostile conditions, the team continued its mission till yesterday, the release said.

The release said that the mission was an endeavour by the Army to give its perished brethren a befitting 'Last Post' in keeping with its highest traditions.

The long wait of 45 years since the crash has not in any way dimmed the Army's commitment to retrieving the bodies, the release said, adding that "the soldiers may be long gone but not forgotten and concerted efforts will continue until logical closure".

Virgin 'Plateau Peak' scaled by Ladakh Scouts team
Indian Army's Ladakh Scouts have scaled the 7,287m-high virgin 'Plateau Peak' in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, becoming in the process the first team of Indian mountaineers to have conquered a virgin peak.

"After a gruelling climb of 13 hours and 32 minutes, facing harsh climate, hazardous terrain and steep ice walls, a team of two Junior Commissioned Officers and 16 others scaled the peak on August 26," a defence spokesman said today.

The mountaineers had to brave avalanches and clamber up gradients of 80-85 degrees during the expedition, which was launched to mark Ladakh Scouts' Golden Jubilee.

The expedition especially sought to utilise the specialist skills of local climbers to summit a virgin peak, the spokesman added.

"On July 6, the team of six Army personnel and 12 local climbers was flagged off by GOC, Fire & Fury Corps," he said.

Plateau Peak stands 7,287m tall and is situated one kilometre south of Saser Kangri. It was one of the highest unclimbed peaks in India.

"Being a virgin peak, it had always been mountaineers' dream. Several unsuccessful attempts in the past from all sides had made it a sought-after target," he said.

After a detailed study of map and satellite images, the Ladakh Scouts team selected a fresh route which had never been taken before.

"The ascent came after a long spell of inclement weather due to which two prior summit attempts had to be abandoned.

"The tenacity of the team despite adverse weather for prolonged periods at super-high altitudes is noteworthy," he said.

Having scaled the peak, the team unfurled the Tricolour and the flags of Indian Army and Ladakh Scouts at the summit.

Re: INSAS Rifle, LMG & Carbine

Its interesting for civilians to interact with Soldiers, It is concerning if some solider speaking of demoralizing things to civilian..

I wonder how the units is, Signal is not infantry and 6 years for this young chap is too less to comment such ..

He basically told be some stuff about corruption within the army. He was telling me that enough money is poured in by the govt., but most of them are siphoned off by their officers.

They are not even given train reservations often, when they need to go home for hoildays. They are expected to use their Military uniforms for 2 years, while with all the training and use, they barely last months. They end up having to buy Military uniforms from their own pocket.

Indian Army's Northern Command has issued a request for proposal (RFP) tender for purchasing miniature unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Increased ceasefire from pak and border tensions with China has forced our army to purchase miniature UAV's. They planning to purchase 49 NK Mini-UAVs, my doubt is - 49 UAV's enough??? are they armoured or just surveillance UAV's?

Varma Kalai experts train Army jawans | idrw.org
SOURCE: THE ASIAN AGE

A team of Varma Kalai experts from Tamil Nadu was recently flown to New Delhi by the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) to teach selected portions of the martial-healing art to the jawans for increasing their oxygen intake even at high altitudes.About 20 jawans underwent intense training in two varmams—vilangu and adapakala—from three Varma experts and practised them for about a month to register big improvement in breathing easy during crisis situations at high altitudes. The practice sessions were held in DRDO lab that simulated attitudes up to 12,000 ft in the room and it was found that the jawans could manage up to two minutes even in zero-oxygen conditions.

"The crisis situations include lack of oxygen gear or depletion of oxygen in the cylinders the jawans carry while moving in high altitudes", explained Dr S Yoganathan, orthopedic surgeon from Perunthurai medical college (Erode district), who had accompanied the varma exponents on the DRDO trip.

"There are 108 varma points in our body. We can increase our energy levels by activating the right points. In vilangu varmam, the points in the shoulder region are activated by pressing with fingers in a given manner. In the adapakala varmam, the rib cage points are stimulated. These activations improved respiration and lung capacity", he said.

A member of the varma kalai team that was taken by the DRDO for training the jawans to manage in crisis situations at high altitudes told DC that the 'pupils' were excited at the results."They had simulated high altitudes, right up to 12,000 feet for us to carry out our training with the jawans numbering about 20. They were excited that the two varmams we taught them enabled them to survive at zero-oxygen level up to two minutes in the absence of oxygen gear, and that they could perform this with their bare fingers to save life in an emergency", the varma expert said, requesting anonymity.

He said the DRDO planned to take the experiment to the next level and popularize it for regular practice and use. Coimbatore-based Arts Research Institute's advisor N Shanmugom, an expert in varma, was the key person who selected these two varmams and ensured that there were no ill effects during the experiment.

It is likely that this initiative could extend to tackling some other emergencies faced by jawans by using appropriate varma kalai techniques, "but only after proper study and adequate training under experts", said the team member.

Varma kalai is a highly advanced form of martial art for both healing (vaidyam murai) a patient and harming (vadham) an enemy by triggering with bare fingers the 108 varma points located at the nerves, veins, muscles and tendons, besides organs and bones.

It may be recalled that Kamal Haasan had punished corrupt people by using varma kalai in his hit film 'Indian'.According to legend, Lord Shiva taught varma kalai to his son Muruga who in turn passed it on to sage Agastya, foremost of the Siddhars.

Agathiar taught the art to other Siddhars and even wrote treaties on it in Tamil. The kalai is said to date back to the times of the Sangam literature about 4,000 years ago.
