There is manpower crunch in officer recruitement but for ordinary jawans there are many many aspirants. Why can't senior jawans be promoted to officer rank rather than inducting all the officers from fresh?

Senior IA NCOs would probably take a cut in pay by getting commissioned as an officer, and they are proud of their service and present rank I would think. Does IA have an Officer Candidate School? Young US Army soldiers who qualify can attend OCS, or a school to prepare them to enter the United States Military Academy (USMA - West Point).

INDIA-UK JOINT EXERCISE AJEYA WARRIOR

The Indo-UK Joint Military training aimed at enhancing counter terrorism skills got underway on 04 April 2013 at the hills of Belgaum. The Joint Training code-named Exercise Ajeya Warrior will simulate a scenario where both nations are working together on a joint operation in counter insurgency and counter terrorism environment. This is one of the major ongoing bilateral defence cooperation endeavours between the two countries and is the fifth in the series which initially started as a biennial feature in 2007 to be held in India and UK alternatively.

The four-week exercise will witness about 100 personnel of the Royal Welsh Regiment of the UK Army and a similar strength of a battalion of the Kumaon Regiment of Indian Army. The troops of the two countries are in the third week of their joint exercise. The first week comprised of familiarization with the organisation, weapons and equipment of both the armies. In the second week tactical drills of the two countries were demonstrated and practiced.

Both countries have troops deployed in active Counter Insurgency/ Counter Terrorism operations and thus sharing each other's operational experiences in such diverse environment is of immense value. The exercise curriculum is progressively planned where the participants are initially made to get familiar with each other's organisational structure, weapons, equipment, confidence training and tactical drills. Subsequently, the training advances to joint tactical exercises wherein the battle drills of both the armies are coherently unleashed. The exercise is a great step for the armies of the two democratic countries to train together and gain together from each other's rich operational experiences.

168 militants killed in J&K in last two years: Antony

NEW DELHI: A total of 168 terrorists were killed by the Indian Army in Jammu and Kashmir in the last two years, with 63 of them being neutralised in the hinterland last year, defence minister A K Antony informed the Lok Sabha on Monday.

In a written reply to the House, Antony provided the figures relating to terrorists killed in the state along the Line of Control (LoC) and the hinterland.

In 2012, 73 terrorists were killed with 10 of them being neutralised along the LoC. The remaining 63 were killed by the Indian Army in the hinterland.

In reply to a question whether the pickets near the border are lying vacant, Antony said, "Posts along the LoC are occupied based on terrain and tactical consideration. Few specific posts in higher reaches are vacated in winter owing to high snow levels and increased avalanche threat."

The Union minister said that surveillance and domination of these areas during this period is ensured by maintaining an effective vigil by employing helicopters and other aerial methods.

"These posts are re-occupied as soon as feasible, once the snow level recedes," he said.

On whether reports of terrorists trying to capture these pickets have come to the notice of the government, Antony said, "Attempts by terrorists to infiltrate from across the border and cause damage continues. Surveillance and dominance is ensured to defeat the designs of infiltrators."
