China has five airbases, extensive rail-road networks in Tibet: Antony

NEW DELHI: Apart from nuclear missile bases in Qinghai province which clearly target India, China has built five fully-operational airbases, an extensive rail network and over 58,000 km of roads in Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR).

People's Liberation Army is also rapidly upgrading several other airstrips in TAR as well as south China, to add to the five airbases from where Chinese Sukhoi-27UBK and Sukhoi-30MKK fighters have practised operations in recent times.

Moreover, with extensive road-rail links in TAR, PLA can amass upwards of two divisions (30,000 soldiers) at their "launch pads'' along the border in just 20 days now compared to the over 90 days it took earlier.

All this is not strikingly new but, soon after Beijing hiked its annual military budget to $91.5 billion, mounting concern over China's massive build-up of military infrastructure was reflected in Lok Sabha on Monday.

Cutting across party lines, 19 MPs came together to quiz defence minister A K Antony on whether the UPA government was taking "cognizance'' of the "increased Chinese military activities'' along the 4,057-km LAC.

Antony, in a written reply, said "necessary steps'' were being taken in consonance with India's national security concerns. "Military capacity enhancement and modernisation of armed forces is a dynamic process, which takes into account the cumulative challenges envisaged by the nation,'' he said.

"The total road network in TAR is assessed at 58,000 km in 2010. Extension of Qinghai Tibet Railway to Xigaze is in progress. Another railway line from Kashgar to Hotan in Xinjiang Uighur Autonmous Region is under construction,'' he said, adding the five TAR airfields were Gongar, Pangta, Linchi, Hoping and Gar Gunsa.

India is now, albeit belatedly, trying to strategically counter China. Just last week, for instance, saw two new Sukhoi-30MKIs touch down at Chabua airbase in Assam, the second airbase in North-East after Tezpur to house the multi-role fighters. Both airbases will have two Sukhoi squadrons (each has 16 to 18 jets) each.

The Army, on its part, has raised two new mountain infantry divisions, with 1,260 officers and 35,011 soldiers. While the 56 Division has its HQ in Zakama (Nagaland) under the Dimapur-based 3 Corps, the 71 Division at Missamari (Assam) falls in the operational command of the Tezpur-based 4 Corps.

IAF is also upgrading eastern sector ALGs (advanced landing grounds) like Pasighat, Mechuka, Walong, Tuting, Ziro and Vijaynagar as well as several helipads in Arunachal. This comes after the reactivation of western sector ALGs like Daulat Beg Oldi, Fukche and Nyama in eastern Ladakh.

Can somebody please tell mr. Antony that he should be doing his job, making sure this country has the weapons it needs to fight its wars, rather than taking joy-rides on T-72's and T-90's. He should be sitting at his desk, expediting all those firms and deals he blacklisted because his party can't stomach any more corruption politics. Twenty years on after the Bofors scandal, and eight years into UPA-II, we still don't have the canons we need to defend our borders. What are we going to fight our foes with? Potatoes? Maybe slingshots? Or how about giant coconuts straight out off his state the size of Antony's head? I'm sorry mr. Antony, but this just don't cut it, leave the cameras and the pizazz and the flashlights for a while, and actually get down to doing it.

Army to scale world's eighth highest peak

In a first of its kind effort, the Indian Army will attempt to scale Mount Manaslu, the world's eighth highest peak, between March and June, a statement said here Tuesday.

The attempt comes close on the heels of the army's successful ski expedition to Antarctica.

Scaling Mount Manaslu, at 8,163 metres altitude, is an extreme challenge that requires courage and conviction, an army spokesperson said in the release.

Due to its sheer difficulty, Indians have never attempted to scale this peak, a challenge that the Indian Army is willing to take up, he said.

The expedition was flagged off by army's deputy chief Lt. Gen. V.S. Tonk here Tuesday.

The 18-member team, led by Col Ajay Kothiyal, a Kirti Chakra and Shaurya Chakra winner, will leave for Kathmandu in Nepal March 24. After a ten-day strenuous trek over mountainous terrain, the team will reach the base camp at 5,456 metres altitude.

Four camps will be established ahead of the base camp and the members will attempt scaling the peak between May 14 and 20.

The pursuit of climbing all open 8,000-metre-plus high peaks started when the Indian Army scaled Mount Everest for the first time in 2001. Ever since, the Army mountaineers have been successful in scaling six of the nine open 'eight thousanders' of the world.

Mount Manaslu expedition, being conducted under the aegis of Army Adventure Wing of Directorate General of Military Training, is the eighth peak over 8,000 metres that the Indian Army is scaling.

Indian Army conducts exercise "Bold Kurukshetra" with Singapore Army in Jhansi

Indian Army and Singapore Army are holding a month-long joint exercise named 'Bold Kurukshetra 2011"² at Babina in Jhansi. The exercise began on March 1 and will continue till March 29. It will involve multi-tiered planning, use of new generation equipment and joint execution of mission by artillery batteries and combat groups, Army officials said here. Besides matching each other's capability in artillery fire power, the two armies would also hone up their skills in anti-militancy exercises.

Exercise Bold Kurukshetra is an annual event between Indian and Singaporean armies. Singapore Army sends its armoured divisions to India and practices with Indian Armoured divisions. Singapore lacks facilities to train its forces due to shortage of land mass. This is the 7th Edition of the exercise.

Besides the Army, the Navy and Air Force from both the countries exercise regularly. The exercises have grown in both size and scope.

Army men selling arms won't get away: SC told

NEW DELHI: The defence ministry has informed the Supreme Court that it has reopened cases against senior Army officers, who were let off lightly despite being blamed by a court of inquiry for illegal sale of their non-service weapons (NSPs) in the border districts of Rajasthan.

On a PIL by advocate Arvind Kumar Sharma, a bench comprising Justices B Sudershan Reddy and S S Nijjar expressed concern about the prohibited bore weapons reaching terrorists as the firearms were sold illegally without any buyer verification.

On Friday, advocate Rajiv Nanda read out a portion of the ministry's affidavit promising that "adequate" punishment would be given to the Army officers found "blameworthy" by a 2008 court of inquiry (CoI).

The ministry said: "Keeping in view the findings and opinion of the court of inquiry and the seriousness of the violations and the relevant provisions of law, the violators have not been dealt with."

"It has been further instructed that subsequent allegations received regarding alleged involvement of senior Army officers in the illegal sale of weapons, which were not covered by the earlier CoI may be investigated," the ministry said. It had asked the Army on February 22 to review the matter on a time-bound basis considering all aspects of the case.

"The Army Headquarters has also been asked to review the procedures followed in the Army for permitting Army officers to import arms and ammunition while posted in Bhutan and for issue of NSP weapons from the Ordnance Depots to Army officers for personal use," the ministry said.

Last year, the Army's status report to the court admitted that 72 officers, including a serving Colonel and three Lt Colonels, posted in sensitive border districts of Rajasthan and in Indian Army Training Team at Bhutan were found involved in a illegal arms racket.

"A total of 72 officers and one JCO were blameworthy" in these cases, the Army had said quoting the 2008 CoI report.
