Army jawans demand new shoes from Antony

http://www.zeenews.com/news688304.html

Ranga Pahar, Nagaland: It was an unusual request to Defence Minister A K Antony from the jawans when he visited 3Corps headquarters here --'Give use new pair of shoes more frequently'.

Deployed in the rugged terrains of the North-East, the jawans said they should be given a new pair of shoes every year and not after 26 months as is the practice.

The Defence Minister, who is on a two-day visit to the North East, agreed to the suggestion made during an interaction with the Army personnel and asked the Ministry officials to implement it at the earliest.

The jawans also requested the Minister to provide a chartered aircraft service for providing a better connectivity to the region.

During a similar meeting with jawans at Leh last year, the Defence Minister had promised supply of better ration provisions and kept his word.

Government is considering providing a dedicated Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) network to the defence forces in place of the spectrum released by them for civilian usage, Defence Minister A K Antony said today.

Hey guys in the wikipedia site tells that INDIA bought S-300 missiles in 1995. Check this out.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-300_%28missile%29#S-300PMU-1.2F2_.28SA-20.29

The S-300 is mainly used in Eastern Europe and Asia although sources are inconsistent about the exact countries possessing the system.[11]

* Armenia [12]
* Belarus - S-300PS systems delivered from Russia in 2007 to replace older S-300 model in Belarussian inventory,Older S-300V sold to Turkey for testing and using on Anatolian Eagle exercises.[citation needed]
* Bulgaria has ten S-300 launchers, divided into two units with five launchers each.[13]
* People's Republic of China: China has bought the S-300PMU-1 and are licensed to manufacture it under the name Hongqi-10 (HQ-10). China is also the first customer of S-300PMU-2 and may be using the S-300V under the name Hongqi HQ-18.[14] China also built an upgraded version of the HQ-10 labelled the HQ-15 with the maximum range upgraded from 150 km (93 mi) to 200 km (124 mi). There are unconfirmed reports that claim this version is the Chinese manufactured S-300PMU-2.[15][16] The total number of the S-300PMU/1/2 and HQ-15/18 batteries in PLA are approximately 40 and 60 respectively, in the year 2008. The total number of the missiles is well above 1,600, with about 300 launcher platforms.[16] Five such SAM battalions are deployed and in active duty around Beijing region, six battalions in Taiwan strait region and rest battalions in other major cities like Shanghai, Chengdu and Dalian. Two Rif (SA-N-6) systems were purchased in 2002 for the Chinese Navy for the Type 051C Destroyers.
* Cyprus & Greece: Cyprus signed an agreement to buy S-300 systems in 1996. Eventually bought the S-300PMU-1 version, but due to political tension between Cyprus and Turkey and intense Turkish pressure (see Cyprus Missile Crisis (1997–1998)), the system was transferred to the Greek Island of Crete. Later, Cyprus acquired the Tor-M1 system and the Buk-M1 system. Finally, on 19/12/07 the missiles passed officially to Greek government in return for more Tor-M1 systems and Buk-M1 systems.[13]

* India has bought six S-300 batteries in August 1995 for $1 billion, probably the S-300PMU-2 version, believed to consist of 48 missiles per system. These will most likely be used in the short-range ballistic-missile defence (BMD) role against Pakistani Ballistic missiles.

* Kazakhstan[citation needed]
* Slovakia - Inherited from Czechoslovakia. Slovakian proposal to equip another battalion in mid '90 was canceled.[citation needed]
* Syria announced an intention to buy the S-300P in 1991 and now seems to possess the system.[11][17]
* Russia: Has used all of the S-300 variations. The Russian Air Defense Forces, which are part of the Air Force, currently operates 220 S-300PMUs and 200 S-300Vs, meaning they operate 420 in total.[18]
* Ukraine - S-300PS, S-300PMU, S-300V and others.[19]
* Venezuela Venezuela has ordered S-300VM "Antey-2500" to equip 12 Regiments. Deliveries are expected to be completed by 2010-2011.[20]
* Vietnam has bought two S-300PMU-1 batteries (12 launchers) for nearly $300 million.[21]

New weapon against Terrorism, hired from Assam

The Indian military has a new weapon against terrorism, the world's hottest chili. After conducting tests, the military has decided to use the thumb-sized "bhot jolokia" to make tear gas-like hand grenades to immobilize suspects.

The bhot jolokia was accepted by Guinness World Records in 2007 as the world's spiciest chili. It is grown and eaten in India's northeast for its taste, as a cure for stomach troubles and a way to fight the crippling summer heat.

It has more than 1,000,000 Scoville units, the scientific measurement of a chili's spiciness. Classic Tabasco sauce ranges from 2,500 to 5,000 Scoville units, while jalapeno peppers measure anywhere from 2,500 to 8,000."The chili grenade has been found fit for use after trials in Indian defense laboratories, a fact confirmed by scientists at the Defense Research and Development Organization," Col. R. Kalia, a defense spokesman in the northeastern state of Assam said.

"This is definitely going to be an effective nontoxic weapon because its pungent smell can choke terrorists and force them out of their hide-outs," R. B. Srivastava, the director of the Life Sciences Department at the New Delhi headquarters of the DRDO said.Srivastava, who led a defense research laboratory in Assam, said trials are also on to produce bhot jolokia based aerosol sprays to be used by women against attackers and for the police to control and disperse mobs.

It will be worth observing, while Insurgents today have all sort of latest weapons, how the decision and theory of using Bhot Jolokia in ammunition by Indian Army will bring success, especially that too when the weapon itself is something Indian insurgents(specially the North Eastern Insurgents) are adapt to eating with food.
Well if may correct some facts here the Bhoot jolakia is no longer the hottest chili in the world. It has recently been pushed to the second spot by the Infinity chili which grows in the UK..

Army Chief to visit US Centcom HQ

The India-US military relationship is set for a qualitative leap with the first ever visit of an Indian Army Chief to the headquarters of the US Central Command (Centcom), which has charge of Af-Pak, the Middle East and Iraq.

Gen. V K Singh will visit the Tampa, Florida-based Command in his 10-day trip to the US between March 6 and 15 with an aim to set up a Brigadier-level direct liaison with the Indian Army. India liaises only with the US Pacific Command, and having a liaison officer in Tampa will signal a recognition of Indian interests in the arc from the Gulf of Aden to the Straits of Malacca, government sources said.

The Centcom liaison and acquisition of M777 ultralight howitzers will figure in the bilateral Defence Policy Group meeting, for which a high-level delegation led by Defence Secretary Pradeep Kumar is going to Washington on March 1. Sources said Gen. Singh will meet Centcom Commander Gen. James Mattis on March 8 to discuss the situation in Af-Pak, the Arab world and Iraq. Gen. Singh will also hold talks with his US counterpart Gen. George W Casey Jr.

Army cash to raise air force

New Delhi, Feb. 28: The army has been given funds to raise a mini air force and the air force has been given cash for at least two multi-billion-dollar contracts in the defence allocation that finance minister Pranab Mukherjee has hiked by 11 per cent over last year's budgetary estimates.

The total allocation for defence, at Rs 1,64,415 crore is more than twice the allocation for education and health put together.

Mukherjee rewarded the defence ministry for the first time in five years for better housekeeping after it exhausted the capital expenditure allocated for new acquisitions. He has hiked the capital allocation by nearly Rs 9,200 crore for 2011-2012 to Rs 69,199 crore.

"We welcome the budget. Our concerns have by and large been addressed. The finance minister has said that should there be any fresh requests, it would be met without any difficulties," defence minister A.K. Antony said, raising the possibility that there could be a supplementary demand for grants.

A stand-out figure in the budget for the armed forces is in the allocation under the head "aircraft and aero-engines" for the army. The allocation has been hiked by more than three times over the budget estimates — from Rs 636.80 crore to Rs 2,291.60 crore.

This could lead to inter-service rivalry between the army and the air force. The army argues that it is building an air component that is integral to its operational plans. The air force argues that it already has dedicated aircraft for the army's battle plans.

"I don't quite understand why the army should get a full-spectrum air force," says Air Commodore (retired) Jagjit Singh, who heads the think-tank Centre for Air Power Studies (CAPS).

Defence analyst Commodore Uday Bhaskar says that these funds could scarcely be used to build a mini-air force, that would involve the acquisition of fixed-wing aircraft.

The army is in the process of acquiring attack and utility helicopters. The US-made Apache Longbow and the Russian-origin Mil are competing to sell attack helicopters to the army that is also preparing to expand its airlift capability. Part of the reason for this is the requirement projected for internal security duties.

The air force's allocation under the same head has been hiked by about Rs 7,000 crore to Rs 22,055.61 crore. This is estimated to be providing for the initial payments for 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft, the order for which could top $12 billion, and 10 C-17 Globemaster III aircraft that could cost $ 4.1 billion.

"This is not really a big deal," says Air Commodore Singh. "If you account for the fact that a single fighter aircraft today can cost more than Rs 350 crore, this really isn't enough for a modern air force. But it is still better that what it used to be."

A slightly more cynical view came from another air force officer who said the army was being too acquisitive. "If you have too many generals, you will want to buy more helicopters, since generals like to fly," he commented wryly.

Bhaskar said the good-housekeeping of 2010-2011, that has resulted in the defence ministry overshooting the capital allocations, should mark the beginning of a sustained process. "We are dealing with block obsolescence of a decade-plus, right from the time of the NDA government through to UPA I and UPA II." He reckons that in the past decade the defence ministry has returned unspent funds of over Rs 25,000 crore.

He says that the defence allocations have to be developed to enhance cross-border military capabilities because there is a potential for an adversarial relationship with Pakistan and China.

"It is only when we have a positive TBMI (Trans-border Military Index) that an independent foreign policy can be pursued," Bhaskar says.

Of the total Rs 1.64,415 crore for defence, Rs 95,216 crore is meant for revenue expenditure — salaries, pensions and maintenance.

kunal sir what the hell had prompted military top brass to select out of fashion M4s for our elite force?is it just the fame it acquired through those hollywood films or specops posters.....what ever this is a bad decision...coz every one had seen the problems it faces in iraq and afghanistan...If we really need a rifle with 5.56 calibre then why tavor was avoided ?every one knows that M4 is a no match for tavor...even if military babus are in a desperate need for american weapons why not they choose hk416 coz us spec ops are fastly switching to hk416...even sig552,AK101 and AK108 were also good choises ....
