Indian Army approves five new ‘Make II projects’
The Indian Army is spearheading actions to provide impetus to “Make Projects” as the prime drivers of infusion of niche technologies through indigenous development.

In a fillip to Atmanirbharta and giving a further boost to the ongoing projects, Indian Army has now approved Project Sanction Orders (PSOs) of five Make II projects.

Make II projects are essentially industry-funded projects involving design, development and innovative solutions by Indian vendors for development of prototypes. An assurance of order is given after successful prototype development.

The Indian Army is spearheading actions to provide impetus to “Make Projects” as the prime drivers of infusion of niche technologies through indigenous development.

The projects which have been sanctioned include-

Frequency Man Packed Software Defined Radio (HFSDR)
Project Sanction Order (PSO) for development of prototype of Frequency Man Packed Software Defined Radio (HFSDR) has been issued to 14 Developing Agencies (DAs). 300 HFSDRs are planned to be procured by the Indian Army, on successful development of the prototype.

These state of the art, light weight HFSDR will provide long distance radio communication through enhanced data capability and band width coupled with enhanced security. It will facilitate blue force tracking with map based navigation using GIS. These radio sets will replace the existing HF radio sets in the inventory, which have limited data handling capability and obsolete technology.

Kill System
As part of efforts to further encourage the indigenous anti-drone ecosystem, the Indian Army has approved Project Sanction Order (PSO) to 18 Developing Agencies (DAs) for procurement of 35 sets of Drone Kill Systems. The project is reserved for MSMEs/Start-ups. Drone Kill System is a hard kill anti drone system against low Radio Cross Section (RCS) Drone/ unmanned Aerial System (UAS), being developed to function in all types of terrains, both during day and night.

Training Weapon Simulator (IWTS)
Project Sanction Order (PSO) has been issued to develop the prototype for subsequent procurement of 125 sets of IWTS. This is the first tri-service Make II project with the Indian Army as the lead service. The project is reserved for MSMEs/ Start ups. IWTS will be utilised to augment marksmanship skills of young soldiers on variety of weapons used by the , providing user friendly graphics to simulate battle scenarios. Each IWTS will facilitate training of 10 personnel at any one point of time.

Terminally Guided Munitions (TGM)
Project Sanction Order has been issued to six Developing Agencies (DAs) for development of 155 mm Terminally Guided Munition (TGM) under Make II scheme. The IA plans to procure approximately 2000 rounds of 155mm TGM against High Value Targets with assured Precision and Lethality for mission accomplishment and minimum collateral damage.

Medium Range Precision Kill System (MRPKS)
15 Developing Agencies (DAs) have got the nod for developing a prototype of MRPKS under the Make-II category of DAP 2020. Post successful development of this prototype, the IA will procure 10 Sets of MRPKS. The Medium Range Precision Kill System (MRPKS), once launched can ‘Loiter’ in the air for upto two hours and can acquire, designate and engage real time high value targets upto 40 km. In times to come we see our country transforming as “AtmaNirbhaar” in Loitering Munition Technology.

Make II procedure of Capital Acquisition
The Indian Army is already progressing 43 ongoing projects under the Make II procedure of Capital Acquisition. 17 out of 43 projects have been initiated through suo-moto proposals received from the industry and 22 out of 43 Make II projects are now in prototype development stage, which is 66 percent of projects by cost (Rs 18,000 Crores out of 27,000 Crores).

The move has generated confidence in the Indian defence industry for participation in the “Make procedure”.

Army to get more M4 armoured vehicles, with Spike missiles
Bharat Forge Limited which has supplied 60 of its M4 armoured vehicles to the Army, some of which have been deployed in eastern Ladakh since the standoff, is set to supply another 30 vehicles while also looking at exports. The M4 is also getting a firepower upgrade with the addition of Spike Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM) on the request of the Army, according to company officials, and plans are under way to upgrade the existing 30mm gun to a 76mm gun.

“We have delivered 60 M4s to the Indian Army till date including some sent for United Nations Peace Keeping missions. We are looking for another order of 30 vehicles and expect further orders. There are also orders coming in from abroad,” a company official said at DefExpo-2022 held in Gandhinagar last week. This will become the main troop carrier in dangerous territories, the official remarked.

Anticipating further demand, Bharat Forge is ramping production capacity to 100 vehicles a year. There were several enquiries from foreign delegations during the DefExpo, company officials said.

In 2020, as the standoff began with China in eastern Ladakh, the Army went scouting for troop carrying vehicles offering better mobility and protection in high altitude areas and evaluated several vehicles fielded by Indian companies. The Army has since placed orders for protected troop carriers from Bharat Forge and Tata Group.

Bharat Forge had entered into collaboration with global aerospace and technology company Paramount Group which shared its Intellectual Property (IP) of its vehicles. Speaking at DefExpo, Paramount Group Founder Ivor Ichikowitz said they were looking at making India one of their primary partners. “We have collaborated with Kalyani Group to build a range of systems for the world. We believe that India can become one of the largest defence exporters and so we invested here,” he said.

In this regard, stating that their current order book is close to $1bn, Mr. Ichikowitz said he believes that a third of their sourcing could be done from India.

On the M4, Mr. Ichikowitz said it was 100% made in India. It was extensively redesigned by Kalyani in India and was about 95% indigenous, he stated. Stating that the India specification of M4 was the most advanced version available, he added, “It is not only an opportunity for Indian forces but also export. We are collaborating with Kalyani for a portfolio of orders for M4 from Central Asia, Africa and Middle East.”

Bharat Forge described the ‘Kalyani M4’ as a quick reaction fighting vehicle designed to meet the specific requirements of armed forces for quick mobility in rough terrain and in areas affected by mine and IED threats. It is capable of carrying an Infantry Platoon in full combat gear.

In February 2021, Bharat Forge announced that it has received an order from Defence Ministry under emergency procurement worth ₹117.95 crore to supply its Kalyani M4 mine protection vehicles to the Army. The deal was for 27 vehicles according to Army sources. The Army has since placed further orders for these vehicles.

Did the Saudis finally order Bharat-52?

Other sources say '.... order from an undisclosed non-conflict zoned nation'.
Most probably. They recently carried out trials.
Damn if they indeed can satisfy the customer with timely delivery and performance, many countries will be willing to look at this I believe.🤩

Does anyone even remember we got a CDS and what is his name? This guy is completely MIA. Yeah, we had too many expectations after Late CDS, Bipin Rawat.

Indian Army requires 18 articulated all-terrain vehicles
The RFI document specifies that 12 vehicles need to be supplied to Nimu in Ladakh and six to Bhuj in Gujarat. This shows that the Army wishes to use these vehicles in the snow-bound areas of Ladakh and in the marshy terrain of the Rann of Kutch.

As per the specifications in the RFI, Man Aman Singh writes, the vehicle should be able to perform at heights of 18,000 feet in glaciated and snow-bound conditions and in salty/dry marshes. They should be able to seat 10 soldiers with full combat load (excluding the crew) and should have in-built ballistic protection. It should have an operating range of not less than 150 km in cross-country terrain in plains and at an altitude of 15,000 to 18,000 feet in the mountains. The vehicles should have a service life of at least 15 years.

Hägglunds BV206 is the most widely known but becomes an aging vehicle. BAE Systems' BVs10 Beowulf might be a relevant contender. Beowulf is based on the BvS10, which has already been produced, including recent on-time deliveries to Austria. Multiple variants of the vehicle are already operating in five countries, first going into service with the U.K. Royal Marines in 2005. Leveraging the BvS10 means the Beowulf design is already established and ready for production. Beowulf also benefits from efficient lifecycle management and routine maintenance and sustainment costs by using common components in the BvS10.

The Beowulf and BvS10s are built by BAE Systems Hägglunds in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, and include several key components from U.S. suppliers, such as their engine, transmission, and hydraulic system.

Indian army to get and deploy AATV Articulated All-Terrain Vehicles along Line of Actual Control
The procurement of 18 Articulated All-Terrain Vehicles (AATV) for mobility and carrying mounted artillery guns to be deployed along the northern borders is under process, Mayank Singh reports. As per requirements projected in March 2022, the Articulated All-Terrain Vehicle (AATV) should be capable to operate up to 18,000 feet in High Altitude Areas (Glaciated and Snowbound) and marshy terrain (salt waste dry/wet) in plains. Twelve have to be sent to Ladakh and 6 to Gujarat.

As earlier reported by the New Indian Express, the Indian Army is set to get stronger firepower along its northern borders with China. Authorities have issued a Request For Information (RFI) to procure mounted (self-propelled) 105mm/37 caliber mounted gun systems. As per the RFI issued by the Indian Army on April 29, the field regiments will be equipped with mounted gun systems.
