In this exercise the group did not use any of the modern equipments and accessories even no digital equipments (only paper maps). They did it with limited resources as done by real Chindits in world war 2.

No bro. The men currently on the Chindit expedition were trying to re-create the same expedition as undertaken by the original Chindits during World War II. So they are doing everything the same way in which the original Chindits did. The Chindits did not have flame-less ration heaters in WWII. This is how they cooked.

Indian Army's 500-km expedition to mark 'Chindits' concludes

The Indian Army on Friday concluded its special expedition to commemorate the spirit and ethos of Indian troops employed on Burma front in the Second World War.

The Chindits Trail Expedition traversed nearly 500 kilometers across the Vindhya Ranges between Betwa and Ken Rivers with its culmination on the banks of Narmada River today.

The expedition was flagged off by Lieutenant General DR Soni, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Indian Army's Southern Command in the presence of Lieutenant General IS Ghuman, General Officer Commanding Sudarshan Chakra Corps on February 16 at Babina.

It was conducted in four phases, each undertaken by a team of two officers, two junior commissioned officers and twenty other ranks, who covered approximately 125 kilometers in five days during each phase.

The Chindits Trail commemorated 75 years of training carried out by the Chindits in Central India in preparation for their operations in Burma during Second World War.

On 17 February, the expedition kicked off from Deogarh, close to the historic Chanderi Fort and moved through the dense jungle of Malthone crossing the Dhasan River, a tributary of Betwa River. Thereafter, it moved further East towards the Ken River, along the Northern fringes of the Vindhyas.

As the temperatures rose during the day, part of the distance was done by night, affording cover and simulating the infiltration operations carried out by the Chindits.

Moving along Southern fringes of Vindhyas towards Narmada River, the team reached the famous Singorgarh Fort, near Singrampur.

Drawing inspiration, the final phase of the execution moved through the Rani Durgawati and Nauradehi Wild Life Sanctuaries and climbed the highest point in the Vindhyas, Mount Sadbhavna (Goodwill) at 752 meters, culminating on the banks of Narmada.

During the course of 21 days, the expedition went across the Lalitpur District of Uttar Pradesh and Tikamgarh, Chattarpur, Panna, Damoh and Jabalpur districts of Madhya Pradesh.

Carrying individual battle loads of 25-30 Kgs, the expedition was entirely self-contained and learnt to survive off-the-land using local resources.

Being out of the range of cellular networks for most parts, the expedition was completely on its own and was fully prepared to tackle any contingency and navigation was done using maps and compass only.

In a bid to spread the message of national integration, the expedition conducted eight medical camps in remote and isolated hamlets and provided free medicine and advice to 1020 locals including 470 women.

The expedition was conducted to relive the experience of the Chindits during their training in these parts and imbibe their indomitable spirit, which remains equally relevant today. (ANI)

Murder of Khrew Lecturer Police Seeks Sanction To Prosecute 23 Army Men
On the night of August 17, 2016, Shabir Ahmad Mangoo, a 30-year-old college lecturer was beaten to death allegedly by Army personnel in Sharshali village of Khrew in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

A probe conducted by Jammu and Kashmir police into the custodial murder of a 30-year-old lecturer in August 2016 has held 23 army personnel responsible for his death.

According to a report in The Indian Express, the police has sought and sanction to prosecute the army personnel as required under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act.

“The Army cooperated in the probe and allowed investigators to record statements of the Army personnel. Special Investigation Team, led by a DySP, completed the probe two weeks ago,” the newspaper report quoted Awantipora SSP Mohammad Zahid as saying.

“We haven’t filed a chargesheet yet. We will require sanction for prosecution under AFSPA for that,” the officer said, adding “I won’t be able to talk about the outcome of our investigation.”

On the night of August 17, 2016, Shabir Ahmad Mangoo, a 30-year-old college lecturer was beaten to death allegedly by Army personnel in Sharshali village of Khrew in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

“It was alleged that Army personnel had beaten village residents with wooden planks, iron rods and rifle butts, that they had barged into Shabir’s house, dragged him out and beaten him before taking him away. Residents said more than 20 youth from the village were taken away,” the report said about the incident.

The report on the Shabir case, sources said, stated that “on 18.08.2016 at 0440 Hrs, Wali Mohammad Mangoo — the father of the deceased (lecturer Shabir Ahmad Mangoo) — lodged a written report with Police Station Pampore, alleging therein abduction of his son and other three persons from Sharshali, Khrew by Army personnel of 50 RR during the intervening night of 17 and 18 August, 2016 at 2300 hrs and inflicting of serious injuries upon (his) son who (subsequently) died in Army custody”.

The police, the report stated, registered FIR 156/2016 under Sections 364, 302, 307, 447, 427 and 120-B of the Ranbir Penal Code at Pampore police station. The same day, the report stated, “at 1930 Hrs, Major/Officer incharge D-Coy 50 RR (Kumaon) lodged a counter written complaint with Police Station Pampore alleging therein that on 17.08.2016 approximately 2230 hrs an Army patrol came under heavy stone pelting by approximately 25-30 locals in the general area Sharshali Chowk and four persons including son of the complainant were apprehended and balance were dispersed after verbal counseling”.

Quoting the Major’s counter-complaint, the report stated that “among the four apprehended persons, only three were handed over to Police Station Pampore and the fourth individual namely Shabir Ahmad Mangoo asked for water and after drinking glass of water collapsed and was taken to regimental medical officer located at Lethpora camp. However, the individual could not be resuscitated”. On the basis of the Major’s complaint, police registered another FIR (No. 157/ 2016 under Sections 147, 148, 341, 332 and 427 RPC) at Pampore police station.

According to the report, the postmortem was conducted and the viscera/X-ray films “from the deceased were sent to FSL Srinagar/Department of Radio Diagnosis, Government Medical College, Srinagar for analysis and expert opinion”.

“Statements of various persons who were found acquainted with the facts of the matter were recorded… Army personnel belonging to 50 RR (Rashtriya Rifles) were found responsible for the death of son (Shabir Ahmad Mangoo) of complainant (Wali Mohammad Mangoo) and injuries to other persons,” the probe concluded.

“The nominal roll of Army officers/officials along with incharge party was obtained and the said officers/officials were summoned for necessary questioning and the information/replies were recorded,” it stated. The investigation concluded that “the second case (FIR filed on the basis of the written complaint of the Major, 50 RR) could not be established”.

“…facts and evidence which came to fore during investigation against 23 Army personnel… has been sent for obtaining sanction from the competent authority under the provisions of Armed Forces (J&K) Special Powers Act for launching prosecution against the said Army personnel,” the report stated.

Army undergoing digital revolution, tech upgrade: Lieutenant General Dewan Rabindranath Soni

Newly commissioned officers in a jubilant mood after their passing out parade at the Officers Training Academy in Chennai on Saturday | Martin Louis

CHENNAI: Indian Army is undergoing a digital revolution as the focus is towards computerisation, advanced thermal imaging sights for night-fighting capabilities and modern integrated fire control systems, said Lieutenant General Dewan Rabindranath Soni, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Command, on Saturday.

After reviewing a passing out parade at the Officers Training Academy, he told reporters that basic training on technology was given to the cadets. As they have been commissioned into various fields, they would be exposed to modern technologies.

On Saturday, 255 cadets, including 37 women, graduated into the Army as officers.

To a query on more software engineers being enrolled in the Army, he said it was good for Indian Army as they could be nurtured as ideal officers. “They have technical expertise and we will impart training to make them physically strong,” he said. Soni added that awareness among aspiring cadets has increased when compared to the situation some 40 years ago.

He also presented gold medal to Academy Under Officer Vivek Suraj, who commanded the parade. The bronze medal in overall order of merit was awarded to Battalion Under Officer Aman Pratap Shahi. The Chief of Army Staff banner for Champion Company was awarded to Basantar Company.

On Friday, five cadets from Bhutan, including three lady cadets, nine cadets from Afghanistan and eight cadets from Tajikistan were commissioned into their respective armies. The cadets marched out from Parameshwaran Drill Square symbolising the end of their training

Major part of Army’s budget used for country’s development: Army Chief Bipin Rawat
The Army chief said that there was a proposal to send some of the officers to universities to exchange ideas and get opportunities for the retired army personnel.

A major part of the Army’s budget was being utilised in developing infrastructure, schools and hospitals in remote areas of the country, Army chief General Bipin Rawat said, adding that the impression that Indian armed forces were capable of securing the borders gave confidence to foreign investors.

General Rawat, who delivered a lecture on ‘Indian Army in Nation Building’ at the Jindal Global University (JGU), said the Indian Army was a “humane Army” and had been effectively handling terrorist challenges in a professional manner.

He also said the armed forces personnel needed to keep abreast of latest technological developments in order to take on futuristic challenges with the emergence of artificial intelligence. He said the armed forces in India had not only been addressing conflicts but also contributing to the nation’s growth.

“The Indian armed forces not only secure the borders but also provides a cushioning internationally for investors and creating a favourable ambience for investments like FDI.

“With this impression that the Indian armed forces are capable of securing the borders, gives confidence to international investors. I can assure you that whatever budget is provided to armed forces, a good part of it is also utilised in developing infrastructure, roads, schools and hospitals in remotest areas of the country,” General Rawat said.

C Raj Kumar, the founding vice-chancellor of the JGU, announced special concessions for children of war widows and serving army personnel on the occasion.

The Army chief said that there was a proposal to send some of the officers to universities to exchange ideas and get opportunities for the retired army personnel.

“We have over 1,000 officers aged between 45-55 years who retire every year as they do not get empanelled for promotion. They are experienced, talented and have the practical knowledge. But they do not have the stamp of a degree.

“50,000 of our soldiers also face similar situation and face difficulties in their second career after leaving the armed forces. That is what we are looking at,” the general said.

View From The Right: Standing with Rawat
The article in Organiser finds the media cacophony over General Rawat’s speech at a seminar in Delhi disturbing.

Army chief, General Bipin Rawat

An article in Organiser targets those who criticised the Army chief, General Bipin Rawat, for his observations on illegal immigrants in Assam. The article finds the media cacophony over General Rawat’s speech at a seminar in Delhi disturbing. “The criticism levelled against General Bipin Rawat for his speech and advising him to exercise restraint and keep away from making political statements simply exposes intellectual bankruptcy in the media. Today, political leaders, bureaucrats, drawing room academics and the media, per se think that they are fountainheads of wisdom concerning national security issues,” the article says. It argues that political leaders themselves must express concerns on various developments and their long-term national security concerns to preempt professionals airing concerns. “Unfortunate, but true, political leaders remain quiet due to fear of losing ‘vote banks’. Their self-interests override national security interests and concerns,” claims the article.

The article argues that national security is a specialised subject with political, social, economic, technology and defence dimensions. “In a war, the inherited classical ethos of civil-military affairs is based on a strict dividing line between political and military establishments. In such situations, the army generals followed political directions of the high-ups,” according to the article. The article reads that in the Northeast region, every political leader was aware of insidious infiltration from neighbouring Bangladesh since 1971, particularly supported by Islamist radicals and the ISI. “Surely, all politicians alike failed dismally to stop the nefarious activities aimed at changing dramatically the demographics in Assam and even in West Bengal. And, the so-called liberal ideologues lent their support to contra national security interests by such political parties. Why is the media not blaming the silence of successive regimes over such national security threat concerns, instead of decrying General Rawat’s strategic assessment?” the article asks.

The deals include a contract for France’s Safran (SAF.PA) to supply airline Spice Jet (SPJT.BO) with engines, water system modernization by Suez (SEVI.PA) in the southern city of Davangere and a contract between industrial gas company Air Liquide (AIRP.PA) and Sterlite.

Macron and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi – addressing a news conference in New Delhi – also committed to strengthening their partnership on defense and security.

“Whether it’s the environment, naval security and resources, or freedom of navigation and overflight, we are committed to making our partnership stronger on all these fronts,” Modi said. “We consider France one of our most reliable defense allies.”

He also hailed France’s commitment to making defense and security equipment in India and contributing to Modi’s flagship “Make in India” plan to boost local manufacturing.

Macron said the countries had decided to do more together to fight terrorism and put together a strategy to share intelligence.

“Our navies will be able to call our respective military bases ... we will also have our space agencies conducting some joint monitoring of the maritime area,” Macron said.

“The Pacific or the Indian Ocean cannot be places for hegemonic powers.”

Macron’s office said some 200 million euros of investment would be made India. It did not provide a breakdown of the value or details of the business contracts.

In a statement later on Saturday, Indian carrier Spice Jet disclosed details of the engine deal - it will spend $12.5 billion to buy engines from CFM International, the engine maker co-owned by General Electric (GE.N) and France’s Safran, and have them serviced.

As part of the deal, Spice Jet will buy LEAP-1B engines for its 155 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft as well as spare engines. CFM will provide maintenance for all LEAP-1B engines that power SpiceJet’s 737 MAX planes for 10 years, the statement added.

A so-called “Industrial Way Forward Agreement” was signed between French utility EDF (EDF.PA) and India’s NPCIL for the construction of six nuclear reactors at Jaitapur.

Negotiations over the construction of next-generation nuclear reactors in India have been dragging on for years.

It was not immediately clear whether the individual contracts were firm orders or letters of intent.

India and China redeploy troops at border as Beijing builds helipads and trenches in Doklam
Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that China has been constructing "some infrastructure, including sentry posts, trenches and helipads" at Doklam.

http://video.ibtimes.co.in/transcod...ina-stand-off-at-sikkim-border-1498891173.mp4

After consistently refuting claims of China's "unusual activity" at the Indo-China border at Nathu La in Sikkim, the Indian government has finally come clean on the matter. Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman, on Monday, March 5, said that the Chinese troops were still present at the plateau and carrying out several activities.

In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, the defence minister said that China has been constructing "some infrastructure, including sentry posts, trenches and helipads," despite the disengagement in August 2017.

She also said that Indian and Chinese troops have "redeployed themselves away from their stand-off positions" but the strengths aren't as high as they used to be.

Speaking of the Chinese presence at the border, Sitharaman added: "The Indian government regularly takes up the issues pertaining to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with the Chinese side through established mechanisms including border personnel meetings, flag meetings, meetings of working mechanism for consultation and coordination on India-China border affairs, as well as through diplomatic channels."

The Indo-China border in Nathu la in SikkimDIPTENDU DUTTA/AFP/Getty Images

Just a few days ago, Minister of State for Defence Subhash Bhamre had said that the situation at the border was "sensitive" and had the "potential of escalation," reported IANS.

He also said that the issues often arise as there is no clear demarcation of the border. "There is no commonly delineated LAC in the border areas between India and China. From time to time, on account of differences in the perception of LAC, situations have arisen on the ground that could have been avoided if we had a common perception of LAC," Bhamre added.

Even though the Doklam standoff was resolved on August 28, and the Indian and Chinese troops had withdrawn from the border, the presence of PLA has often made news.

Beijing has been upgrading and widening the existing routes in the region, but the area is not too close to the Indian border, due to which New Delhi reportedly hasn't raised an objection to it yet.

Numerous reports had earlier also cited satellite imagery and confirmed that Beijing was indeed building a road in the region.

Earlier, Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa too had admitted that the Chinese soldiers were present near the Chumbi valley. It was also being said that a Chinese division of more than 12,000 soldiers, 150 tanks and artillery guns were moved to the region and the PLA had also not removed the tents and construction equipment since the disengagement.

The Ministry of External Affairs had earlier said that there was no fresh activity in Doklam and the PLA troops were well within China. "The status quo prevails in the area and any suggestion to the contrary is incorrect and mischievous,'' the Times of India quoted MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar as saying. "I would like to reiterate that there is no new development at the face-off site and its vicinity since the August 28 disengagement."

http://www.jpost.com/Opinion/Indias-defense-manufacturing-brings-new-possibilities-to-Israel-543417

India’s defense manufacturing brings new possibilities to Israel
Israel should improvise creatively to leverage this opportunity.

The Indian government has accelerated efforts to modernize and enhance the operational capabilities of its defense forces. This year, the nation’s defense budget is projected to show growth of 7.81%.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said the government will also bring out an industry-friendly defense-production policy for 2018 aimed at promoting indigenous production by the public and private sectors, including micro small and medium enterprises, or MSMEs. After opening up private investment and liberalizing foreign direct investment (FDI) in defense production, the government plans to establish defense industrial corridors in the country, with the first to be built in the Tamil Nadu state.

In the last three-and-a-half years, a number of Indian states have replicated the model of the biennial investors’ Vibrant Gujarat summit in order to attract global investment and industries in their states, which is crucial for the development and job creation. A number of global investor summits have taken place, including GIS Madhya Pradesh, Resurgent Rajasthan Partnership Summit, Momentum Jharkhand, UP Investor Summit, Happening Haryana, North East Investors Summit, Invest Karnataka and Sunrise Andhra Pradesh Investment Meet. This year started with Bengal Global Summit, Advantage Assam and Magnetic Maharashtra. For the first time, Indian states are launching policies to ease business regulations and promote indigenous defense manufacturing.

A few days back, the Maharashtra government approved a defense and aerospace production policy. The state government will create Rs 1,000 crore (approximately $150 million) in initial working capital to the small-to-medium enterprises, or SMEs in those sectors. Under its defense and aerospace policy, the government plans to establish “defense hubs” at Pune, Nagpur, Ahmednagar, Nashik and Aurangabad. The state will offer financial concessions and incentives to develop indigenous defense technologies and to establish “anchor units” to build an ecosystem for defense MSMEs. Other states such as Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are also drafting their aerospace and defense manufacturing policy too. The Uttar Pradesh government is planning to develop defense manufacturing clusters in the state.

Encouraging the start-ups and SME participation in the indigenous defense manufacturing is a key priority of the Defense Ministry. On January 16, the Defense Acquisition Council, chaired by Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, announced a revised and simplified “Make II” procedure, in which some special provisions are given to MSMEs. The Ministry, in cooperation with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, or FICCI, has launched a platform called “Society for Indian Defense Start-ups,” or SIDS, as an institutional-support mechanism for development and funding of defense start-ups.

THE DPSUs and Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) labs will also collaborate with FICCI to nurture the MSMEs with the relevant expertise. For the first time, a number of Indian defense start-ups have made their presentations before the defense minister. Such initiatives reflect the government’s readiness to give Indian defense start-up and SMEs a much-needed push.

A number of Indian MSMEs used to serve as the suppliers to DPSUs and are the key players behind the success of some major defense manufacturing projects.

According to the Dhirendra Singh Committee’s report (a committee set up by India’s Ministry of Defense in 2015), almost 80% of components, aggregates and assemblies of complex weapon systems and aircraft are made by MSMEs, which are part of supply chains. According to this report, nearly 6000 MSMEs in India are supplying the components and sub-assemblies to the DPSUs, ordnance factories, DRDO and private industries.

The access to markets, non-recovery of dues from large-scale buyers and lack of adequate and timely finance are some of the most talked about challenges among SMEs. In the Indian union budget for 2018, the government has addressed these issues with specific measures. The government has proposed to bring public-sector banks and corporations onboard the Trade Receivable Discounting System (TReDS) platform and link this with the Goods and Services Tax Network, or GSTN. The TReDS is an online platform which was launched last year to facilitate the financing of trade receivables of MSMEs. The government has provided Rs 3794 crore (about $600m.) for giving credit support, capital and interest subsidy to MSMEs. The government will take some additional measures for addressing the non-performing assets and stressed accounts of MSMEs too. The target of lending under MUDRA Yojana has been extended to Rs 3 lakh crore. From this year, NBFCs (Non-Banking Finance Companies) will also facilitate MUDRA loans for MSMEs. The MUDRA scheme was launched by the Indian government to provide easy finance to entrepreneurs from rural and remote areas.

After implementing a series of efforts and structural reforms over the course three-and-a-half years now, the government is fast-tracking defense-production efforts. On February 13, the Defense Acquisition Council of India approved capital acquisition proposals of Rs 15,935 crores. The DAC has fast-tracked the procurement of the assault rifles, sniper rifles, light machine guns and advanced torpedo-decoy systems for warships. According to a press release, the assault rifles will be made in India under the category of “Buy and Make Indian,” through both the Ordnance Factory Board and private players.

THE HIGH-PRECISION weapons will be bought with the “Buy Global” category. The ammunition for these will be initially procured and subsequently manufactured in India.

The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) is one of the bold steps of the Indian government. The GeM (launched in 2016) aims to transform the way in which procurement of goods and services is done by government ministries and departments, PSUs, autonomous bodies, etc. This platform has a great potential to support “Make in India” drive, MSMEs, and indigenous defense manufacturing process. On January 30, its upgraded GeM 3.0 version was launched. The GeM 3.0 would offer standardized and enriched catalogue management, a powerful search engine, real-time price comparison, template-based bid and RA creation, demand aggregation, e-EMD, e-PBG, user rating, advanced MIS, analytics and more.

Israel’s defense-tech industry is famous for delivering operationally proven cutting-edge technologies. In Israel’s defense industry, the contribution of the SME sector is significant. Despite relatively low numbers, these SMEs provide added value to the larger firms. These SMEs offer prompt innovative and flexible solutions to urgent needs. In 2014, the SME department of SIBAT (a department of the Israeli Defense Ministry that regulates defense sales by managing licensing and export controls) took initiatives to promote their country’s defense SMEs in the international markets. India’s defense manufacturing push has created a plethora of new opportunities. The Israeli defense SMEs can join hands with the Indian defense manufacturing SMEs to tap into these opportunities.

In the joint statement issued during Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s India visit, both countries reasserted the desire for co-production in the defense sector and for developing new business models of joint ventures, including joint manufacturing. In the coming days, it is expected that the engagement between the public and private sectors of both sides will accelerate. On the sidelines of Netanyahu’s visit, the head of SIBAT, the International Defense Cooperation Directorate of Israel’s Defense Ministry and officials from India’s Department of Defense Production held a discussion to explore the possibilities of collaboration in defense manufacturing.

The Indian government is determined to push indigenous defense manufacturing and the MSME sector. This is the right time for India’s defense partner Israel to align its collaborative approach with this new reality. India’s indigenous defense manufacturing push is an opportunity. Israel should improvise creatively to leverage this opportunity. The India-Israel defense SMEs collaboration can be the next move in this partnership.

The writer promotes advanced technologies, start-up ecosystems and the Indian government’s business and technology-related initiatives, such as Digital India, Make in India, Smart Cities and Start-up India.

Where as we see that our regular inf bns or rr bns or even ar bn maintained at much lower strength than what is authorized. Will this cost us in a possible conflict with china? I mean i call it mountain warfare extreme version at that kind of alt where man to man ratio comes to play... inspiration :- rezangla battle ...a coy due to its position and the josh of the men was able to stop a brigade... height adv? Anyone's thought?

You can find older structure on Bharat Rakshak. Only changes that I know of are that the infantry sections now have 2 LMGs (INSAS) and an RCL team.

RR and Assam Rifles units have 6 companies instead of 4 in the case of a regular infantry.

Maybe. PLA also has its own demons to face.

"Josh" is overrated and yes taller people do enjoy an advantage.

PLA lacks Josh as well. An Army of conscripts that got so low on morale at the heights of Doklam plateau that the PLA was forced to build shelters and helipads to keep them supplied.
