Indian Army's T-72 tanks expected to be upgraded by Ukraine
Ukraine and India are working on plans to expand military-technical cooperation. The two sides are negotiating a program to modernize the T-72 tanks from the Armed Forces of India, a source in the defense sector said to the Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

“India is showing an interest in placing an order for the modernization of T-72 in Ukraine. Currently the parties are negotiating the organization of cooperation. The request from the Indian clients to upgrade the T-72’s, according to some estimates, includes more than one thousand units,” the message says.

According to the source, replacing the armored vehicle engine with a Ukrainian 1,200 horsepower 6TD-2 engine and equipping the tanks with air-conditioning and an autonomous power supply are among the main requirements from the Indian client.

The T-72 Ural is the most produced second-generation battle tank in service in countries of the former Soviet Union and was developed and manufactured by Uralvagonzavod (Nizhny Tagil, Russia)

Army Design Bureau to boost production of home-grown weapons......
I hope this will free up time and talent so that DRDO / ARDE can now focus mainly on 'new research' and 'experimental technology'; leaving the basic re-design and indigenous-adaptations to these guys.

Little disappointed I must say, soldier's gear is still not in the priority list.

"The 10 projects that were identified include: 125 mm smooth bore barrel with gun article, improved ammunition for T-72 and T-90 tanks, 1000 HP engines for T-72, individual underwater breathing apparatus, environment control unit and auxiliary power units for T-90 tanks, advanced pilotless target aircraft, manoeuvrable expendable aerial targets, tracked light dozers, assault trackway and modern aircraft refuelling pump."

Maybe that's because the outline for its production has already been made and as far as news goes, prototype is already out (!).

Army For New Low Level Radars
By SP's Special Correspondent

April 17, 2015: The Army is scouting an unspecified number of new Low Level Light Weight Radars Mark-ll for deployment in non-mountainous sectors like desert and plains. The radar needs to be easily transportable and capable of detecting even small, low-RCS entities like UAVs. The Army would prefer sensors with a integrated target designation system capability, with means to supply targeting data to a weapon. The Army requires the new radars principally to build a sensory barrier against low-level air intrusions across the border from China and Pakistan, especially by helicopters, low-flying tactical aircraft and surveillance drones. It requires radars that are easily transportable and ready for operations within minutes of assembly. The radars will work to track complex target manoeuvers at very low altitudes and to provide targeting solutions on them when integrated with weapon systems. aircraft and 'spy planes' or unmanned aerial vehicles. With air intrusions continuing periodically especially in the North East, the Army is looking to ramp up the capability. The DRDO is also building low level radars, which the Army is now looking to augment with more numbers. Companies like Thales have supplied low-level surveillance radars to the Indian Air Force in the past.

Hope this UGV is cheap enough to be expendable. Their is no point to a UGV if cannot be cheap.
BTW who will use it? SF only? Would be good if certain infantry formations get this too.

Two more Army brigades for Kashmir Valley

The Army is moving two brigades into Kashmir valley from outside the State to beef up forces in North Kashmir as tensions mount between India and Pakistan. Informed sources said that two brigades–– one based in Udhampur and the other in Dharamsala –– are being moved to North Kashmir to fill gaps along the Line of Control (LoC).“This is partly to make up for some troops which were moved into South Kashmir recently and also further strengthen the counter infiltration grid for the coming months,” an Army officer told The Hindu on Wednesday. The specific locations where they would be deployed is however not known. The two brigades are part of a reserve division which has been alerted for possible movement in the wake of the attack on the Uri army camp on Sunday. Officials said they were preparing for increased infiltration in the next couple of months. A brigade typically has three units, each unit with over 800 fighting troops. So on an average, two brigades would together bring over 5,000 troops extra into the Valley. The development comes days after the terror attack on the Army’s base in Uri sector in Kashmir which claimed the lives of 18 soldiers and another 30 were injured.
General alert
In the wake of the Uri attacks and two encounters at Uri and Naugam continuing for the second day on Wednesday, about which the Army officials have been tightlipped, a general alert has been sounded across the LoC. A general increase in movement on Pakistan side has been noticed, officials added. “We have been asked to be on high alert though there are no specific instructions,” an officer said.

India-US close to Co-Production of the Anti-Tank Javelin Missile in India
According to the Ministry of Defence, India amd the US have almost completed all negotiations on co-production of the state-of-the-art Javelin Anti-Tank Guided Missile.

The two countries in the recent past have come together to explore many joint military projects, most of them on co-production and technology transfer. India and the US are determined to take their military engagement to a higher level and forge a strong partnership.

It is believed that Washington will soon approve Technology Transfer of the Javelin Missile to India along with licence to manufacture the missile in large numbers. Tata Power SED is most likely to sign the deal with Javelin Joint Venture (JIV).

India will manufacture the most advance version of the hand-held missile which is called the FGM-148 Javelin which is used by US Forces.

Washington has always been protective about its high-tech military technology but the dawn of the new relationship between India and the US is opening doors to co-production and changing mindset. Washington has now agreed to part with the new-generation Javelin just for India.

India had pushed for the purchase of the Javelin in 2010 via the Foreign Military Sales route but the US had refused transfer technology for the system. The Request for Proposal was finally dropped by New Delhi.

Later in 2014, the Indian Ministry of Defence selected the Israeli Spike Anti-Tank Missile but the deal is still awaiting price acceptance.

The Indian Army wants to equip all its 382 Infantry Battalions and 44 Mechanised Infantry units with new-generation anti-tank missiles and phase out the French Milan missile. The army requires a total of 20,000 hand held Anti-Tank Missiles.

Besides the Javelin and the Israeli Spike Missile System which India intends to induct, it is also in advance stages of testing its home-grown vehicle mounted Nag Anti-Tank Missile System.
