LR-SAM’s big test this month | idrw.org

The Indian Navy is waiting with baited breath for this system, and finally there could be good news. The Indo-Israeli long-range surface-to-air missile (LR-SAM) programme will take a big leap forward this month with the first fully integrated test to be conducted in Israel in the presence of officials from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as well as IAI.

While the LR-SAM (Called Barak 8 in Israel) was first tested in 2010, it has undergone a phased series of trials that have included unguided firings, systems tests, simulated tests, navigation tests and endgame engagement trials, all with mixed degrees of success. This month's test is understood to be the first in which the end user configuration will be tried for the first time. Recent reports in the Israeli media suggest that Israel will be looking to integrate the LR-SAM on its Sa'ar 5-class corvettes principally based on a threat perception from Russian-built Yakhont anti-ship missiles deployed by Syria. It is known, however, that the missile system is not operational yet, and that integration may be towards testing routines rather than deployment.

According to available information, the LR-SAM onboard frontline Indian vessels, will be housed in four vertical launch units (VLUs), each housing eight missiles, on each of the three Project-15A destroyers and seven Project-17A stealth frigates. The combat suites of both vessel classes will be built to operate with the Elta EL/M-2248 MF-STAR In 2010, DRDO scientists visited Israel for the missile's first test flight. The dual-pulse smokeless solid rocket motor propelled missile is being built with an effective range of 70-km and a ceiling of 16-km.

The missile's high agility is being provided by a tungsten jet vane system for thrust vector control and a highly evolved electro-pneumatic control actuation system. Following fresh interest evinced by the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Indian Army, the dual-mode guided weapon (GPS + data link for midcourse guidance/seeker for terminal homing) will be deployable on mobile launchers as well. The weapon system can engage 12 targets with 24 missiles. It is this ground-launched variant that has been most visible at defence exhibitions around the world in the last two years.

While DRDO labs produce the propulsion rocket system, thrust vector system and certain other components, Israel builds the heart of the LR-SAM—the seeker, endgame avionics and electronics, technologies that have independently matured in India in the AAD and Akash programmes. With a 70-km range, the LR-SAM is likely to be fielded to the militaries of Israel and India in the next two years. It will begin by arming the Project 17(A) frigates and the Vikramaditya aircraft carrier.

One year of Akash SAM in service | idrw.org

SOURCE: SP's Special Correspondent

The indigenous Akash surface-to-air missile (SAM) has completed a year in deployed service with the Indian Air Force. With two active squadrons now in Gwalior and Lohegaon and two more coming up in forward areas of the North East, the system is acquitting itself satisfactorily in terms of preparedness parameters. The Indian Air Force ordered eight squadrons (two in December 2008 and six more in December 2010), receiving its first battery in March last year. The first squadron was raised in Gwalior, the second in Pune and the next two are coming up in the Northeast.

"The Akash is an extremely important system for the IAF. It has been a long development process, which has ended in success. The IAF is supporting the programme with its resources and commitment, and has been impressed with the capability it offers. We have ordered eight squadrons, which will replace the mission profile performed by our Pechora and OSA squadrons. In future, we may consider more," says a senior officer at Air HQ.

The IAF had an unfortunate series of failed customer tests in May-June last year, following the acceptance of units, though issues with the system were subsequently ironed out. The manufacture of the systems is being split between Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the IAF and Army (the latter has on order two regiments, ordered in March 2011). Things started rough in 2012 with certain delivery hiccups from BEL slowing down inductions, though the public sector undertakings (PSU) has since speeded up deliveries to keep deadlines with the IAF. Sources indicate the IAF has received 32 launchers so far for four squadrons. The Army has received four launchers so far for part of its first regiment. The Army is incidentally, considering placing orders for additional regiments.

The IAF will be conducting user launches periodically this year from the Integrated Test Range is Odisha, and will test the Akash in various mission profiles including a) far boundary interception, b) near boundary interception, b) high altitude interception, c) crossing and receding target interception, d) low-altitude and near boundary, e) multiple target interception, f) low altitude and far boundary interception, g) mid-altitude and mid-range, h) crossing and approaching, in addition to others. These profiles were demonstrated during user trials between 2007-2010.

The Akash programme team is now also working on the Mk.II version of the Akash, a programme formally sanctioned in May 2010. The Mk.II version envisages a 35-km range weapon with an expanded kill envelope and a higher degree of engagement and accuracy.

Protecting airbases is fine but arty is very flexible system and adding more protection units, will slow it down ..

The solution is in compactness and inbuild with arty system, this is yet to happen in near future..

Also for forward bases against subsonic cruise missiles and as C-RAM and as a guard to artillery groups...

Hope Astra spinoff SAM turns out to be similar to MBDA Rapier Jernas

Though the MBDA one is a laser beam rider WVRAAM based one, and Astra is a Radar Homing BVRAAM, my point is the portability and airborne deployment capability. Hope they don't mount it on a truck.

Another option could be that once the Astra SAM is ready, maybe we can merge it with AK-630 gun and a pencil beam radar and come up with our own version of Pantsir or SkyShield.

If navy wants then surly yes ..

There is an serious problem navy is facing now, They close down trishul SAM in favor of barak-1, Now as the company is blacklisted there is shortage of Barak SAMs and no where there is solution, This is one reason one must self reliance ..

Trishul program should have continued ..

You are aware as to how corruption has crippled our economy. Coal blocks were sold and than nothing extracted instead we imported coal. Dollar took flight and balance of payment crisis led to rupee devaluation creating the mess we are in.
same is the story of weapon purchases. You buy a weapon and then blacklist the firm. this is the sure shot recipe for disaster. The so called modern weapons are all in short supply with IN while we have excess of russian outdated junk.

Google SLAMRAAM and SPYDER.

Yeah, it will be truck mounted, if deployed.

Nod for short-range surface-to-air missile soon | idrw.org

SOURCE: EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

A final nod from the Indian government on the Short-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (SR SAM) project is expected shortly. The project involves joint development of short-range surface-to-air missile for the three services by technology transfer from European MBDA in joint development with DRDO and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) as the production agency.

The announcement of completion of negotiations between the two governments was made in a joint statement during French President Francoise Hollande's visit to India in February. Loic Piedevache, country head, MBDA, said, "We are expecting the project to be finalised very shortly. We look at India as a long-term strategic partner."

The missile is to be developed in two variants — ship-based variant for the Navy and land-based for the Indian Army as well as the IAF.

The consortium's another flagship project Milan 2T is expected to be further extended and contract for the same is likely to be signed "soon" according to Piedevache. "The modalities of production are still in discussion phase with BDL," he said.

It may be noted that the Defence Acquisition Council recently approved procurement of additional Milan 2T portable anti-tank missiles for the infantry. This, when the original manufacturer has moved to a more advanced extended range (ER) version of the missile.

BDL has so far produced 1, 2 and 2T versions of the missile. The consortium's PARS 3LR missile has also been one of the contenders for arming HAL's Rudra platform along with Israel. While the field evaluation trials were completed about a year ago in Sweden, a final decision from the MoD and the Army is awaited. HAL had handed over the first weapon systems integrated version of ALH to the Army in Aero India 2013.

While the increasing importance to the strategic cooperation between India and France was further underlined during former foreign secretary Ranjan Mathai's Paris visit in June that listed 'defence' as one of the pillars of strategic cooperation between the two nations, the DRDO in September 2011 had inked a deal with Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) for increased cooperation between the two nations.

The consortium which has been working with the British MoD on various funded missile projects has also made presentations to the Indian agencies according to its UK officials.

DRDO MBDA agreement soon on short range missile | idrw.org
SOURCE: THE HINDU

An agreement is expected to be inked shortly between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and MBDA Missile Systems to design and co-produce SR SAMs (short range surface-to-air missiles) even as the European company seeks to improve its footprint in India.

"We are considering India as a long-term strategic partner and we are increasing our footprint from the commercial and industrial point of view," head of MBDA in India Loic Piedvache told The Hinduduring a tour conducted for a group of Indian journalists at MBDA's facilities in Schrobenhausen, near Munich, in Germany and Lostock in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Piedvache sought to underline the importance MBDA was attaching to India by pointing out that for it was for the first time that the company had agreed to produce a brand new product (SR SAM) outside the European countries. Apart from co-designing and co-developing, MBDA would transfer the technology. "We want to be seen as an Indian player and it is not mere buyer-seller cooperation," he added.

During the tour, MBDA showcased the production and integration facilities of some of its hi-tech tactical missiles that were being offered to India.

Mr. Loic said MBDA was also awaiting the final approval of Indian authorities for its ASRAAM, an air-to-air Within Visual Range (WVR) missile for integration with the Indian Air Force's Jaguar. He said MBDA's priority was to conclude some of the request for proposals (RFP)s for which it had bid, including Mistral and PARS 3 LR, for augmenting India's Very Short Range Air Defense Systems (VSHORAD).

Besides the RFPs, the European company had made 30 technical presentations to Indian authorities on various missiles in response to RFIs of the Ministry of Defence. They include the next-generation Beyond Visual Range Meteor air-to-air missile, hi-tech Dual Mode Brimstone, an air support weapon that was deployed in frontline operations by the Royal Air Force in Afghanistan and Libya, and the missile Spear.

While PARs 3 LR, Taurus as well as high explosive processing and integration facilities were showcased at Schrobenhausen, six other missiles, including Meteor, ASRAAM, Brimstone and Spear were highlighted at Lostock.

Rob Thornley, Sales and Business Development Executive at MBDA UK Ltd, termed Meteor as a "game changer" in air-to-air combat. It has been developed to meet the needs of six European nations – U.K., Germany, Italy, France, Spain and Sweden. The production of the missile has begun and Sweden would be the first country to acquire it – some time next year – followed by France.

Describing how air-to-air combat had changed drastically over the years, Mr. Thornley said deploying WVR (12-20 km) dominance weapons was one of key elements enabling the ability to strike first. He said ASRAAM, the WVR weapon, was used in Afghanistan and Libya and that they were "getting very good reliability reports".

Similarly, the Dual Mode Brimstone could be used to destroy a range of targets such as fast-moving tanks, vehicles, armoured cars as well naval vessels, while ensuring that there was no collateral damage. In Afghanistan and Libya, where the missile was put to extensive use, the Brimstone displayed such precision strike that in one case, it just took out radar on the roof without causing any damage to the building.
