Exclusive: Indian Army Getting Long Range ATHOS 2052, Israeli Artillery Guns
Artillery guns play a devastating role on the battlefield as they can maintain sustained rates of fire over prolonged periods turning enemy fortifications in rubbles. Artillery is so important on the battlefield that Artillery is called God of War. In the coming years, the Indian Army is likely to induct several new long-range artillery guns and one of them is likely to be sourced from Israel. Team Guarding India brings you the story of Israeli ATHOS 2052 that will be part of Indian Artillery in the future.


Indian Army is the second largest army on earth which requires a large number of guns. However, after infamous Bofors scandal of the 1980s, the Indian Army could not get any new artillery gun as Indian politicians developed cold feet on each procurement proposal. Finally, with the induction of US-made M-777 lightweight howitzer, by a government to government deal, the ghost of Bofors was put to the grave.

Due to prolonged neglect, presently Indian Army is having Soviet M-46 artillery guns which were designed in the 1960s. After the Kargil war, the Indian Army prepared Field Artillery Rationalisation Plan which decided to use 155 mm as standard caliber for Indian Artillery. The plan envisaged procurement of 2,800 to 3,000 155 mm/52-calibre guns and 155 mm/39-calibre lightweight howitzers from different sources by 2027.


To date, the Indian Army has got only 145 M-777 lightweight howitzers from US, 100 K-9 Vajra self-propelled howitzers which are already deployed at Galwan standoff. Besides foreign artillery guns, the Indian Army also ordered 114 indigenous Dhanush guns and 40 x Arjun Catapults. This means the Indian Army will still need to replace around 2600 artillery guns.

Though DRDO and Indian Private sector have made some promising designs like ATAGS and Bharat-52 long-range guns. However, to meet the massive shortfall generated through years of political neglect, India will still need to import some guns from foreign suppliers. Due to this reason, the Indian Army selected Israeli ATHOS 2052 howitzer.


ATHOS stands for Autonomous Towed Howitzer Ordnance System which is a 155mm/52 caliber long-range artillery gun developed by Israeli Elbit Systems. ATHOS is next-generation towed gun which is highly mobile howitzer with deadly accuracy. ATHOS has been extensively battle-tested by the Israeli Army and is renowned for its accuracy, reliability, and ruggedness. It has several advanced features that were developed to meet modern battle requirements.


ATHOS 2052 is an autonomous and self-maneuverable system that can accurately target enemy locations 40 kilometers away. It has fully computerized systems integrated with inertial navigation and aiming systems including a GPS which allows it automatically to point the gun towards the target without user interference. This feature allows quick firing of artillery shells. ATMOS 2052 can fire 3 rounds in 30 seconds in burst mode, 12 rounds in 3 minutes at intense firing rate, and maintain sustained fire at the rate of 42 rounds per hour which can overcome any target.

For survivability, ATHOS is powered by a diesel engine and can maneuver itself using its own power and specially designed road wheels that give it shoot and scoot capability. These advanced systems ensure that using 4 to 6 crew members ATHOS 2052 can began firing within minutes.


ATHOS can use any 155mm ammunition and has an ammunition loader which enables faster loading of ammunition besides reducing crew fatigue. ATHOS has cutting edge electronic systems for controlling fire, computation of target data, inertial land navigation, and target aiming systems. These systems are integrated into onboard firing computer and gun-laying system which relies on data from the command post, UAVs, or even optical backup sights resulting in assured quick-fire support.


However, the Indian Army realized the biggest advantage of ATHOS was its price which was not only lower than French Trajan gun that is a variant of Nexter gun but also was substantially lower than indigenous Dhanush 155 mm/42 calibre artillery guns that is being produced state-owned Ordnance Factory Board (OFB).


Indian Army is presently in cost negotiations with Elbit System for a deal that will result in the procurement of 1580 ATHOS long-range artillery guns valued at around INR 10000 crores or 1.2 billion USD. Out of these 1580 ATHOS guns, 400 will be directly imported from Israel, and rest 1180 guns will be manufactured in India by Bharat Forge under transfer of technology.

Interestingly, Bharat Forge has also partnered with DRDO for producing indigenous Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) that is expected to enter service in large numbers, estimated to be more than 1000 artillery guns. One may hope that ATAGS production will also get benefited by ATHOS technology turning them far deadlier.

Team Guarding India hopes that ‘Made in India’ ATHOS will be inducted soon to serve alongside ATAGS and Dhanush artillery guns which will ensure the Indian Army has massive firepower advantage over our adversaries.

Artillery Barrel Hit: Concerns Over Charge In Ammo
Nagpur: The 155x52 mm advanced towed artillery gun system (ATAGS), claimed to have the world’s longest range of 48km, suffered a barrel burst during trials last week. Now, concerns have been raised that the method of firing the ammunition used at present may affect the gun’s performance.




The guns have been made by Bharat Forge and Tata Power, and were being tested with shells made by Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) at the Pokhran range when the accident took place. An investigation is underway in the matter.



To achieve a higher range, a shell has to be fired with extra charge or explosive. In ATAGS, the shell was fired with seven charge modules. Higher charge increases the pressure, which, beyond a certain limit, can affect the shell’s movement. This can lead to accidents like barrel hit, said sources.



It is learnt that concerns were raised about the safety of firing the shells with higher charge a few days before the accident. The OFB, which makes the shell, refused to comment on the issue.



The ATAGS has been designed by Pune’s Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), a unit of Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO). The gun made by Tata Power suffered the barrel hit. The barrel in both Tata and Bharat Forge guns have been made by the latter.



The ATAGS is designed to achieve a range of 42km and beyond. In 2017, it had achieved a record range of 48km.

The shells for 155mm calibre howitzers made by the ordnance factory are designed to be fired with up to six charge modules and handle pressure up to 340 megapascals. To make the shell fly over 40km, seven charge modules are used. The OFB shells are made under transfer of technology (TOT) from South African company Dennel. Even in the TOT, it has been specified that the gun can handle service pressure of 340 megapascals, or six charge modules at the most.



This is called zone 6 ammunition, and what has been used in ATAGS was zone 7. Higher pressure due to zone 7 can lead to risks. Zone 6 is the standard world over, the sources said.



OFB only makes zone 6 ammunition, which is in line with NATO standards. Even the 155x52 calibre mounted gun system developed by the OFB uses zone 6, a source said.

An official in one of the private companies confirmed that the shell was fired with zone 7 ammunition to achieve a higher charge, and rejected any claim that they had received any warning. So far, both Bharat Forge and Tata guns have fired over 1,000 rounds using the zone 7 rounds. The ATAGS barrel is designed to handle 440 megapascals of pressure.



“The pressure handling capacity is basically meant for the barrel but even the shell is expected to withstand similar levels,” the source said. A final investigation into the incident will only reveal the truth said the company official.

OFB Dropped As Integrator



Earlier, the OFB was supposed to be the lead integrator of the gun, but eventually ARDE tied up with private companies. Sources involved in the development said OFB had also made a prototype barrel for ATAGS. However, later it was not roped in for the project. The details of the present gun were also not shared due to a non-disclosure agreement with the private companies.

Indigenous artillery gun may go back to drawing board after barrel burst

An indigenously developed artillery gun which suffered a barrel burst in field trials earlier this month injuring four army personnel may need to go back to the drawing board, officials told ET. The malfunction of the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS), a 155 mm/52 calibre gun system designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), occurred during internal developmental firing at the Pokhran (Rajasthan) firing ranges on September 12.

The incident is being viewed as a setback to defence modernization efforts, especially since the army had put on the backburner a proposal last year to procure 400 artillery guns of the same type from Israeli defence manufacturer Elbit Systems, as the homemade one was still under development. The remaining 1,180 guns were to be produced by the Ordnance Factory Board. The proposal was put on hold as the DRDO project was heading towards completion.

The mishap has also come at a time when the gun system had successfully completed trials and production of the first 40 was to begin shortly. The gun barrel, manufactured by Bharat Forge Ltd, exploded right after a firing test that was being supervised by DRDO officials, sources said. When contacted, a DRDO spokesperson said an inquiry committee has been set up to look into the cause of the accident. “As soon as the report comes, we can share details. Cause is not very clear at present," the spokesperson added.

While the cause of the accident would be revealed after a detailed inquiry, officials said that it could have occurred due to the inferior quality of metallurgy or the barrel not meeting prescribed standards. An official told ET that design parameters will have to be brought back to the drawing board to ensure that the gun has reliable technology that is safe for users. The accident comes at a particularly difficult time, given the border standoff with China and the neighbouring country’s continued collusion with Pakistan on its support for cross-border terrorism.

It also marks a further delay in the ATAGS project that was started in 2013, with production scheduled to begin in 2019. The project was delayed earlier during the development cycle, with issues cropping up in the gun system’s recoil systems as well as delays in the manufacture of subsystems. DRDO’s Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) had partnered with private players, including Bharat Forge and Tata Power Strategic Engineering Division for the project, with the understanding that orders would be divided between the two companies after successful trials.

Officials said the accident will impact the induction of an urgently required modern gun system into the Indian Army. The army has a Field Artillery Rationalisation Plan, drawn in 1999, to acquire 2,800-3,000 155 mm/52-calibre guns of all kinds and 155 mm/39-calibre lightweight howitzers by 2027. These include 814 truck-mounted guns, 1,580 towed guns and 180 wheeled self-propelled guns.

ELBIT has a JV with Bharat Forge so no problems for them. And they won the tender too. Bharat 52 also is under trials n that's Made in India.
Your goodself has been quoted in some posts as blaming 'B'. There are two Bs involved here. Which one? I am asking cuz all the aces actually are held by the other B.

It's been widely reported that barrels for both the TATA ATAGS and Bharat Forge ATAGS are manufactured by Bharat Forge as per specifications by ARDE-DRDO. I believe that one of the reasons for the TATA gun's higher quote was because it's barrel was purchased from BF, whereas for BF it is an in-house product.

The barrel burst is common in any artillery gun.
No FALTU IMPORT should be allowed.
A gun as beautiful as ATAGS deserve induction in mass number.

It performance was perfect when it achieved 48km with basic bleed explosives, if I am not wrong.

What a bunch of absolute bullshit. Shitty OFB shells burst an ATAGS barrel (they did it even to an M777), and then articles begin on sending it back to the drawing board, while usual suspects immediately begin pimping ATHOS.

Sickening. And frankly, those OFB bastards (and all such psu's, especially in defense) need to be whipped into shape. They need old school, violent union-busting treatment. Bohot ho gaya in logon ka, they're a national security threat.

The cut off date for the Towed 155/52 howitzer embargo is december 2020, so importing Elbit howitzer is out.. Maybe have some deal to assemble the first few hundred Elbit howitzers in India from knock down kits, with heavy indigenous content after TOT for the remaining..
And if it was the OFB shell that was the problem, then ATAGS will be back in testing with better imported shells perhaps

And if it was the OFB shell that was the problem, then ATAGS will be back in testing with better imported shells perhaps
ELBIT already has a JV with Bharat Forge. They had jointly bid for the ATHOS tender.

Bharat forge can manufacture howitzer shells too.

The current shells are under ToT from Denel. If shells was a problem then QC is the reason. Solution-Privatise or at least Corporatised.

if faulty shells are a problem, why not take a 360 degree X-ray of every shell manufactured and keep it on record.

If a barrel burst does happen, use the X-ray to identify the faults in the shell and thereby develop a library of manufacturing defects to look out for. Ai algorithm can be built into the X-ray machine to flag the possible defective shell at the QC itself.

Here “X-Ray” is colloquial for any imaging tech for non-invasive scan of the Shell.

If a barrel burst does happen, use the X-ray to identify the faults in the shell and thereby develop a library of manufacturing defects to look out for. Ai algorithm can be built into the X-ray machine to flag the possible defective shell at the QC itself.

I remember reading a CAG report which stated that brand new sukhoi 30mki had got second hand engines .

This made me very angry at HAL and I thought we must have a log system.

But as I read on what I found out was this entry was logged. It was logged and stated that cat B engines have been used what was even more shocking wad that IAF approved it.

So I doubt any sort of log system could have any effect.

This demonstrates the fundamental difference between Indian thinking and all other advanced economies.

others would focus their thought on engineering and economics part of such a machine and how much money they can make, indian thinking is to dismiss it outright for some totally irrelevant issue of separate military wing from entirely separate manufacturing cycle of an entirely separate component from a entirely separate company.

Not your fault, our public discourse is usually at a macro level at 30000 feet.

If the shell was the broblem.... DRDO would not go back to the drawing board...

In my view DRDO is attempting to build in extra features into ATAGS that would place it above other systems without going through associated problems such features would create. The need to build in additional chamber capacity of 25 liters as compared to 23 liters would give the gun an additional 10km range. But where is the technology to make Charge 7 or higher, Additional charge capacity means the barrel metallurgy and thickness has to be different to take on additional pressures? The additional weight of barrels meanas a special recoil and carriage.

That has all lead to ATGS being good four tons heavier than the to ehbster 155mm. That was being laughed at by the "experts" when pointed out in this forum itself. Now that the barrel has gone burst they are going back to the drawing board...

Fine , but who is the sufferer? Indian Army - the user, And who will benefit - China and May be Kalyani who along with Elbit will offer their guns and MoD will have to accept it - Jhank Mar Ke.

When diplomat wrote I already knew definitely yes, now the thing is we here have to get inside what the heck really happened? here in DFI, a gun that should be in SERIAL PRODUCTION by now is still going on test and test.
But the test must be passed. Unless you want a reservation in that too.

It performance was perfect when it achieved 48km with basic bleed explosives, if I am not wrong.

Just a thought:

if faulty shells are a problem, why not take a 360 degree X-ray of every shell manufactured and keep it on record.

If a barrel burst does happen, use the X-ray to identify the faults in the shell and thereby develop a library of manufacturing defects to look out for. Ai algorithm can be built into the X-ray machine to flag the possible defective shell at the QC itself.

Here “X-Ray” is colloquial for any imaging tech for non-invasive scan of the Shell.
Holography for fault detection on artillery projectile.
