Foreign maal pe disco dance karke kyaa faida ?

There is a huge difference between know how and know why

And it is very difficult to convert imported know how into know why , while the converse is very easy.

Let see if L&T in the future can convert the imported know how into something of their own design
L&T is deep into defences ecosystem . They are everywhere from lca to submarine to artillery programs to space program. They will far more from this then what PSU could muster after all l&t is a true engineering firm.

Upgrade M-46 artillery guns 155/45 Tested Successfully

In a significant yet cost-effective boost to the Indian Army’s firepower, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has placed a Rs 200 crore order on the state-owned Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) for upgunning the Indian Army’s vintage 130 mm M-46 artillery guns. Significantly, the OFB won the contract in competition with two foreign vendors and their Indian partners.

Fifteen regiments comprising 300 towed artillery pieces will be upgraded to the 155/45 mm calibre in the contract signed between the state-owned Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) and MoD in South Block on October 25. All upgraded guns will be supplied to the Indian Army by 2022

L&t claims 75% indigenous content by work package on k9 vajra. Slide on BRF artillery thread.
Does anybody know more?

155 mm Sharang gun, with range of 39 kms, successfully test-fired; to be inducted into Army by March

The first batch of 18 Sharang guns will be inducted into the Army by March end this year.

The upgraded 155 mm artillery gun Sharang was successfully test-fired at the Long Proof Range (LPR) of Ordnance Factory Khamaria in Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday.

The gun, indigenously upgraded from 130mm to 155mm/45 calibre, has a striking range of 39 kilometres.

Programme Coordinator (Sharang) Brigadier Jayant Kar said the first batch of 18 artillery guns will be inducted into the Army by March end this year.

The gun went through integrated firing check on different parameters ranging from 0 degree to 45 degrees on Tuesday at the Long Proof Range at Khamaria.

"The indigenously-designed Sharang will be inducted in the Army by this fiscal-end. The barrel of the gun has been upgraded from 130 mm to 155 mm and this has increased its hitting range by 12 km kilometres, to 39 kilometres," Brigadier Kar said.

The official said that Gun Carriage Factory (GCF) in Jabalpur had won the global contract to upgrade the Sharang artillery gun. The upgradation work was carried out by the GCF with the help of the state-owned ordnance factories, and teams from the Army and DRDO, he said.

The ‘Made in India’ artillery guns will be supplied to the Indian Army from Gun Carriage Factory, Jabalpur and the Ordnance Factory, Kanpur. Its commercial production is likely to begin soon.

The Vehicle Factory Jabalpur (VFJ) has been tasked to assemble 12 Sharang gun systems. Sharang gun systems will also be equipped with night vision sensors which would allow the armed forces to target the enemy at night.

The 155 mm Sharang gun is an upgraded version of Soviet-era 130 mm/52 calibre M-46 field guns. The original version has a striking range of 27 kilometre.

The Indian Army is expected to save Rs 100 crore annually due because of the indigenous upgradation of the gun.

Why would they take a 130mm/52 calibre & create a 155mm/45 (and not a 155mm/52 one)??!!!..

155mm 45 caliber is bigger gun than 130mm 52 caliber. That is the maximum the existing gun carriage can carry.
Yes, but 155/52 is bigger then 155/45... That's what I didn't understand, why they'd reduce the Chamber length instead of keeping it unchanged? You sure it couldn't handle that?

Now Sharang has same range of 40km as Dhanush which is also 155/45, but it could've achieved range of atleast 45km like ATAGS & K9.

The chamber length has not reduced...in fact it has been increased... 130/52 amounts to 6760 mm. 155/45 amounts to 6975 mm.. So, the sharang barrel is longer than the M46 by 215 mm.

DAMN OFB....... GOOD JOB DONE.

FH77 weighted 11 tons and they created one at 8 tons. This is remarkable.

@Bleh .. Bofors FH77 was of 155/38 cal which has been updated to 155/45 cal. M-46 was of 130/52 which has been upgraded to 155/45 cal.

SO basically we are upgrading every arty of ours for 155 mm ammo. Now why we are not converting them all to 52 cal, because we have locations where 155/52 cal guns could not be carried off conveniently.

Not to diss OFB effort here. Thats not fair weight comparison. FH 77 has auto loader, 4 wheels + APU, Self deployment mechaism, fire control computer ,Crane + Autoloader. M-46 - none of that, apart from better Caliber and Night Vision assist.

Because Sharang is a mountain gun, not every gun needs to be about bells and whistles, some of them need to be transportable and easy to maintain & operate in the mountains. logistics supply chain in mountains not the same as in plains, think eastern border & LAC.

Oh Sorry about that... I think fair comparison would be with Type GM-45 which is another upgraded M-46. GM-45 weighs at 8.8 ton whereas Sarang at 8.4 tons, an incremental increase of just 700 kg. Dhanush did the same with an incremental increase of 500kg. So yes, OFB has outdone themselves here.

@ezsasa there is nothing like mountain gun or desert gun. Even FH77 was not made to deploy in Kargil and Mussi made a blunder in going by that notion. Its all about your ability to deploy which matters.
