Railguns are more feasible and practical for naval warfare as during a Naval confrontation a 2-3 shells fired from a railgun would be enough penetrate layered protection system of destroyers or even CBG well in a CBG if the target is the Aircraft carrier then you would require more than shells coming at mach 7 at the target. Since the US navy is testing the Railguns and is trying to replace the conventional 155 mm Naval guns

You have to look at the reason for that too. When you have seen domestic user being positively responsive to anything DESI? How could you expect your designers to come up with something exquisite when the products designed don't see light. You do need to evaluate products in real life scenarios rather then in lab or table to evaluate its true potential.
Take the case of INSAS AR. Its been criticised for a lot of reason after Kargil, but in due time these has been sorted out and if you ask any of the soldier using it in active duty today, they are well satisfied with its performance. Now based on its success Excalibur is getting rolled out and don't miss out on what did happened few months back during the evaluation process and how the IA had came to agree using it. Now the zeal and enthusiasm which they are showing in its test, trial, suggestion and development, I am sure that they are going to get a pretty much efficient weapon system.
Moreover, when did India started or supported weapon designing on its own. Even today, how many of us or the coming generation does dream about engineering a weapon system or a platform? I think only a handful. And moreover we would have to look out the finance available to R&D sector too.

ok then why are DRDO and OFB guys are paid so much thiose dodo's dint help when we needed

whats stoped them in developing light and powerfull arty guns they kept sleeping on bofors blueprints for two decades

heck a small nation like singapore and israel can develop a full range of small arms which are better than the traditional german or american fire arms

then why cant they hadnt we faught 4 regular wars and a constant low intensity war on owr LOC

how difficult is it to make a modular polymor body based bullpup variant of excalibur ?

just look at pakistan a nation that cant develop a 80cc moped engine is making full range of ammo in pakistan

and look at us even with french , israeli , american and russian support where do we stand its utter failure and shmelessness of DRDO & OFB guys

Similar but different :p

Ultimately how large a projectile or how far you send the same projectile depends on the quantum of the hot gasses you put behind it to propel it. Longer barrels allow for a larger quantum of gasses as well as a longer time for those gasses to expand to the maximum. But then you will have to improve the recoil dampening mechanism. A better suited APU. The range calculations have to improve. The laying has to improve.

Basically organic growth of the gun system.

But then you may experience an inorganic growth of the system too where the material, of which the gun iis made, has been changed like in the M-777. At this point you will have completely newer set of difficulties to worry about.

Dear Guru,

How much do you think a scientist of DRDO does get in salary. Compare the same with any of the fresher in IT sector. Lets talk about priorities here. Priorities given by not only GoI, but priorities given by us too. Ask any of the student of today, his ultimate aim would be to get a masters in Business administration or in Engineering and too move over to greener pasture abroad. How many of the students you have came across who want to pursue a course in metallurgy? How many of the students you came across who want to be part of DRDO or OFB or any govt organization? All those who are a part right now, among them too half were there not by choice. Our priority from the start has been in IT and pharma sector and look where we stand in it.

Visit any of those shady area in Bihar and UP. You would come across a lot of people who are busy in making KATTA's. But could you employ any of those in these organizations? From the day one itself arms and ammunition has never been our concern. As far as formation of DRDO and OFB are concerned, they were mainly concerned with making licensed version of foreign arms. Take the case of INSAS. Kargil paved the way for its induction and there too it came under immediate fire for not performing on par with AK's. Did anyone asked why it happened? Did anyone from Armed services were a part in its designing and preliminary testing? Its easy to point finger on the manufacturer for the flaws, but no one want to shoulder half of the burden. How on earth do you suppose some guys sitting in a room to design a flawless weapon without any input from the field person.

Lets take it in this way, when ever a software is designed, the developer does have a number of session with the customer to brush up he details and after that too a ED or BETA version is launched before the original. Now imagine what would happen with that software if it goes the INSAS way. As far as designing new weapon is concerned, how much do you think is given for R&D? How much our premiere educational institutes have helped the defence sector? We do churn out world class engineers yearly and half of them are serving in Silicon valley and NASA.

Lets find answers to these questions:
Q.1--- Why private sectors has not been promoted in defence sector from day 1?
Q.2--- What is our annual expenditure in defence R&D?
Q.3--- What is the participation of educational institutes in defence sector?

I think we will know what is holding us back if we could answer these questions. Its easy for anyone to point a finger at DRDO and OFB but we should look at other factors too because of which we are at this stage.

you are right owr army is way too corrupt when it comes to there acute love for "foriegn mall" but my point is why dint the OFB & DRDO themselfs took the initative to ask MOD to make army cooprate with them if army wanted a better product or at least try to reverse enginear all the latest concepts in the international arms market and make a cost effective jugar that realli works better than the international compitition .... i say all DRDO, OFB and indian army are collectivelli responsible for this situation and heads need to roll and those who deliberatelli sabotaged indian efoorts need to me made to pay for there sins

Now there's the point. Government can't simply ask Army to cooperate with DRDO. They could only pass ordinance. But here comes the democracy and political opposition. If any such ordinance is passed by govt. there would be a huge hue and cry in political arena and no govt. would like to face such a situation. All of these cooperation and all would not surface overnight. This is a gradual process and some positives are being noticed lately when IA got involved proactively in development of Excalibur.
What is needed is a smooth flow and streamlining of ideas and fund. Lets take the case of Arjun MBT. Previously its been rejected on a lot of factors and when almost all o them has been sorted out in MK2, the issue of weight just sprout out. Now I do agree that at 68TON it is heavy then T-90's. But look at other MBT's like Merkava, M1A1 Abrams, Challenger.. they too are at same weight category. So just instead of cribbing on the weight issue, IA should deploy a technical team to assist DRDO on its refinement. I am sure that the guys in our Mechanized version are great engineers in themselves and could come out with some ingenious idea to cut down the weight by a ton or two.
Its not like DRDO is not giving out anything. They do come up with ideas and one o two working prototypes. But Govt. as well as services should also lend a helping hand in it. Govt should have a proper funding system and guys from services should have a enthusiastic approach towards its development. Moreover we should involve private players in building up a part or two. Privatisation of defence sector would be suicidal for India, but there should be a 49% share of private sectors in development too.
We did committed a lot of mistake in past and its a high time that we try to brain storm on it and make up for the loss ASAP. Our whole system has been responsible for this which does include people like us and the coming generation too. Time has come when we need to develop our Arms development sector into a lucrative career opportunity so that our Aeronautical engineers instead of running to Boeing and Lockheed Martin gets attracted to HAL and NAL.

Hi I'm new here and I come with a purpose. Assume a tank comander is upright out of the Cupola hatch in an Arjun Mk.I. The tank is taking a right hand turn at any thing between 35-50Kmph. There is an explosion under the right rear track from an UXO. A splinter enters the neck just at the base of the skull/neck,killing him instantly. I have been toying with several possible trajectory possibilities but need more ideas. We need to see that this never happens again if possible.Any help welcome. Thanks

There were some post on FB abut Arjun MK-II

First lot of 40 improved Arjun Mk-2 indigenous Main Battle Tank to be fully operational soon : Monahar Parrikar

if the Mk-2s perform according to the expectations of the I.A. top brass then a future order of at least 300 Mk-2 is likely to take place

Is it true..

No news on this but I wish it becomes true.
May be Monahar Parrikar after making IAF to buy 100 Tejas have shifted focus on this and will make IA follow same.
