Israeli protection specialist Plasan showed off a new family of 'soft' material armour fits at the DVD exhibition in the UK in mid June.
The Ultra Flex Fence (UFF) package is based on the same basic premise as other 'textile' and soft armour packages that have emerged over the past couple of years that are designed to defeat unitary warhead rocket-propelled grenades (RPG). However, the company contends that its mountings and the low weight and thickness of the UFF package are where its real benefits lie.
The armour package consists of spongy paneling that can be rapidly fastened to vehicles via flexible mountings. The panels are held in place with extensive Velcro strapping giving an enduring hold, but easy removal and replacement. The company quotes 3-4 minutes needed to remove each square metre of coverage.
The flexible mountings consist of springs, with UFF spacer blocks retaining the requisite 200 mm standoff distance to absorb the RPG hit. With this extra width on the vehicles, the springs enable a modicum of movement and flexibility ensuring that the panels won't get damaged by – or in turn damage – buildings or foliage.
