Is there any reason we can't reverse engineer the engines? What are the disadvantages or hurdles to that?
Modern Turbofan engines are one of the most complex pieces of engineering consisting of various parts, which in themselves are engineering perfection. So its extremely difficult.

Even the world's biggest copycat China failed to copy & develop a modern jet engine for multiple decades.

The same reason we can't build one.
Finance and infra for testing
Finance & infra was never the problem. Kaveri is not strugging for funding but motivated folks who can't think beyond their 4 PM samosa-chai break.

from a policy perspective, same approach as their rule that they are not going to start any highway/expressway project unless 95% of land acquisition is complete. they want the project to be run in mission mode.
If you are aware GE had already won tender to supply 99 engines for Tejas Mk2. A few of them already in India.

Still PMO prefer to advise ADA not to start project unless new deal is assigned. Reliability of American has always been an issue.

We don't know full picture of problem but there is change America might had arm twisted India over Ukraine issue.

American domestic politics are a known issue, since India is not a treaty ally, we should expect nothing less. but when a deal is signed with their govt's approvals, delivery is often on time, which is not the case with russians. russians keep negotiating with extensions and delays for years after the deal is signed, like with vikramaditya.

Better get the DRDO nijjers to clone it and make whatever Su34 style changes are needed like the Chinkus have done with J15/J16

Russi is in no position to bargain.
could've been good project had we not already been flying 270 MKIs.

Modern turbofan blades with their complex cooling channels are made using advanced CNC machines, which no Indian company makes. That's also a big reason why we're struggling (apart from metallurgy).

Right now, western countries are researching in 3D printing of blades. Once, they figure out how to tackle the thermal and mechanical stresses on 3D printed alloys, it'll again be a giant leap.
