IAF's second hub for C-130J Super Hercules at Panagarh operational
Kolkata, May 5 (IANS) The Panagarh airbase in West Bengal, renamed Air Force Station Arjan Singh, become operational on Thursday as the second hub for the C-130J Super Hercules transport aircraft.
Two C-130J Super Hercules from the Hindan-based 'Veiled Viper' squadron, flew in to the airbase while a batch of six aircraft would be handed over to Indian Air Force by US aviation major Lockheed Martin beginning early next year.
Beginning his two day visit to the Eastern Air Command, IAF chief, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha, reviewed the new hangar facility at the airbase which was renamed in the honour of the country's only living five-star officer, Marshal of the Air Force Arjan Singh, on his 97th birthday on April 15.
As a turnkey project, Lockheed Martin built the hangar facilities and other associated infrastructure, which are similar to the facilities built world over for Super Hercules tactical aircraft that IAF operates since February 2011.
A fly-past by a single C-130J Super Hercules flying in from Hindan was timed to coincide with the air chief's visit even as another was parked at the tarmac for static display. Air Chief Marshal Raha also interacted with the air warriors of the airbase and Lockheed Martin officials.
A new transport squadron will be raised at AFS Arjan Singh to operate the Super Hercules aircraft. Presently, two AN-32 squadrons operate out of the Jorhat airbase in upper Assam, while a flight of Avro aircraft undertakes VIP communication duties from Borjhar airbase, Guwahati under Eastern Air Command.
Constructed during the Second World War, the base is located in Burdwan district, some 112 km from state capital Kolkata.
The surface at Panagarh was laid during the Second World War by the allied forces as part of their China-Burma-India campaign.
Air Chief Marshal Raha will also visit other adjoining airbases of Kalaikunda, Salua and Purnea during his visit.

Sweden to customise offer to push Gripen-NG fighter aircraft deal with India
The Swedish government will soon place a structured offer to India to push through the Gripen-NG fighter aircraft deal, a product of Swedish defence major Saab, which is also keen to develop production processes in India
The Swedish government will soon place a structured offer to India to push through the Gripen-NG fighter aircraft deal, a product of Swedish defence major Saab, which is also keen to develop production processes in India. Sweden offered the Gripen-NG deal to India when a high-powered Swedish trade delegation visited the country in February this year.

The structured offer could comprise a combination of technology transfer and setting up of a local facility in India to produce aircraft coupled with investment commitments, an Indian embassy official in Sweden said, adding that Saab has already prepared a blueprint for the Indian Air Force’s entire defence system. The IAF pilots are likely to take a test flying of Gripen, a light single-engine multirole fighter aircraft, by the end of this year.

Mikael Damberg, Sweden’s minister for enterprise and innovation, told FE that Saab, which has been in India for a long time, has a proven track record and instead of looking only at exports from Sweden, it was looking at how to develop capability and production processes in India to fit into Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.
“It has been one of the greatest successes of Saab International that many countries see that the business model is very attractive. Swedish firms and companies are doing a lot of investments in India. One of India’s successful strategies has been attracting international capital. Modern economies are not only about export. They are also about finding the right partners. There are very exiting partners in Sweden and the market in India is exiting,” Damberg told FE on the sidelines of a session of India Unlimited, an initiative of the Indian Embassy in Sweden.

Banashri Bose Harrison, the Indian ambassador to Sweden, said Saab has shown interest for a full and comprehensive technology transfer to India. Saab also has intentions to use India as a production base for supply to other countries.

Though Saab is not a government-run company, the Swedish government is fully backing the project to sell Saab’s Gripen-NG fighter to India.
According to Damberg, India has the space to accommodate more than one supplier for acquiring fighter aircraft and Sweden didn’t hide its desire to get actively engaged in the aero space of Indian defence. But the Gripen issue was more at a level of dialogue and the Swedish government or Saab as a company was yet to make any structured offer. The offer might be structured on the lines of the terms set for Brazil in the $4.68-billion deal.

Other than Gripen NG, Saab is also hoping to supply advance surveillance system, electronic warfare, ground combat and naval systems to India expanding its cooperation with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, Pipavav Defence, Kalyani Strategic Systems, Ashsok Leyland and others. But the Saab management hoped that the Swedish government would hold government-to-government dialogues in paving the way for cooperation in such areas.
“Our dialogues with India range beyond cooperation in defence and we have signed a number of MoUs with India to take forward the Sweden–India cause,” Damberg said, adding that life science was one of the strong areas where the two nations were working together.

Though the government-to-government talks were defence-centric, it was part of the Swedish government’s plan to use international partnership to drive industrial expansion and job creation within Sweden.

There are possibilities that the Swedish government could link the Gripen-NG agreement with the multi-sector industrial investment programme, which could see rise in trade between India and Sweden down the line. Sweden’s trade in India is expected to reach over $5 billion by 2017 from a level of $2.5 billion in 2015.
Damberg said; “Sweden’s position is very clear. We are a free-trade country and we would like the India-European Union free trade agreement (FTA) to happen. But no negotiation is taking place.” He further said the Swedish business community was keeping an eye on the long-pending Indian GST and it hoped it would ultimately roll out.

(The trip to Stockholm was facilitated by India Unlimited, an initiative of the Indian embassy in Sweden)

IAF overcomes challenges, takes best practices from RF-Alaska

Staff Sgt. Shawn Nickel
Avionics maintenance airmen from the Indian Air Force (IAF), 14 Fighter Squadron, Ambala Air Base, India, look on as U.S. Air Force airmen from the 18th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, Kadena Air Base, Japan, replace a panel on an F-15C Eagle fighter aircraft April 29, 2016, at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska. IAF airmen learn best practices and new technology participating in RED FLAG-Alaska 16-1, a Pacific Air Forces command directed field training exercise for U.S. and allied forces, to provide joint offensive counter-air, interdiction, close air support and large force employment training in a simulated combat environment. With 5,300 miles between them and home maintenance airmen from the Indian Air Force, 14 Fighter Squadron from Ambala Air Base, India are experiencing a far different climate, terrain and common work practices while they participate in RED FLAG-Alaska 16-1.
While at Eielson they will simulate the first 10 combat sorties during the surge of a conflict, working alongside their counterparts from around the world in the cold early mornings and into the mosquito filled evenings to keep their jets in top working order.
“We are here to support pilots while they hone their skills of combat flying, but we learn valuable lessons throughout the experience that will help our maintenance team improve their skills,” said Squadron Commander Latish Palakkot, 14 FS officer in charge of maintenance. “Very seldom do we get to see so many airframes from so many fleets from who we can take positive work practices and apply it to our routine.”
While the operational tempo they are experiencing here isn’t far from what they experience at Ambala Air Station, Maharajan said his airmen are learning to overcome weather uncommon to their normal working environment.
“The mornings are much colder than home, so its really showing how our maintenance team can overcome challenges and get the mission accomplished anywhere in the world,” he said.
Along with the challenge of the arctic spring environment, variances in equipment has given the IAF unit an opportunity to overcome aircraft specific obstacles. The fasteners used to supply their Jaguar attack jet aircraft with liquid oxygen and nitrogen are different than those available in the U.S.
“It took a lot of proactive planning to anticipate all the combinations of fasteners we would need,” Palakkot said. “Our specialized teams did an amazing job looking forward with the available information and lead time to get this accomplished and we are flawlessly able to resupply our jets.”
While en route across the continents to Eielson, an in-flight mechanical issue caused an unexpected stop in Canada, which was quickly resolved and thanks to the skill and precision of the hand-picked maintenance team of 42.
“We are constantly impressed with the technicians we have chosen,” said Wing Commander M. Maharajan, 14 FS senior engineering officer. “They expedited the processes to successfully complete the commute to RF-A not losing any time.”
Maharajan said the 354th Aircraft Maintenance Unit at Eielson has also went above and beyond as hosts to the IAF.
“The support we have received has been over the top,” he said. “One example occurred when we worked with the tool crib to familiarize ourselves with how they handle continuity of equipment. We were able to learn a lot from their processes, which we may be able to use in our daily work. This will help us become faster and more efficient, which was one of the main goals we came here with.”

Indian Airforce's roundel is not cool.
I think we need new roundel. Isn't?
Put Ashok Chakra there.
Yanks use Blue winged star, chinks use red star, japs use red dot,
We must also have a distinct symbol.
:dharma:
Westerners whenever draw Indian Flags (incorrectly) or make new designs like they do with British or American flags, they never forget,
The Chakra. :biggrin2:
