Jaish-e-Muhammed (JeM) terrorist Shahid Latif, chief handler of the fidayeen squad that attacked the Pathankot airbase in January, was released by India in 2010 as part of the Manmohan Singh government’s effort to repair ties with Pakistan.
High-level sources told TOI that 47-year-old Latif, who was in an Indian jail for 11 years for acts of terrorism, was among 25 militants belonging to Lashkar-e-Taiba, Hizb-ul-Mujahideen and JeM who were freed on May 28, 2010, as part of the Centre’s outreach to the hostile neighbour. They were lodged in jails in Jammu, Srinagar, Agra, Varanasi, Naini (UP) and Tihar, and were deported to Pakistan through Wagah.

Interestingly, Latif’s release was sought by the same Jaish terrorists who had hijacked Indian Airlines flight IC-814 and managed to get their chief, Maulana Masood Azhar, freed along with two others in exchange for 154 passengers in December 1999. However, the then Vajpayee government had refused to release Latif and 31 others on Jaish’s “wish list”.

Just to put the record straight, here are two instances of the Congress surrendering to militants. In 1991, an executive director of Indian Oil was kidnapped by militants in Srinagar. To secure his release, the then home minister SB Chavan released nine militants. Two years later, nearly four dozen JKLF militants were allowed safe passage from the Hazratbal shrine, where they had held 170 civilians hostage for six weeks.

But, back then, even Dulat had been criticized for not being able to pre-empt the incident. As the RAW chief, it was, after all, his job to track terrorists and ideally foil their plans. The hijacking was, in fact, an example of the failure of the entire Indian machinery. To argue today that 155 innocent people should have paid the price of the state's inefficiency is pure hypocrisy and insensitivity.

OT for this thread. But if you see - RaGa used to rarely appear in public etc. initially and people/media used to rain praises on him (he was even designated the youth icon of India). He was not exposed till that point of time.

Then he had to make more public appearances and speeches when he jumped into politics and got properly exposed as the idiot he is. Now, someone has taught him that the best counter-strategy for him is to keep on attacking Modi and build his election career on that hatred. Being the brainless chap he is, he blindly follows it. Rafale is his bread and butter and after so many setbacks, he still clutches on to it, and in recent days has almost pushed the govt. in the backfoot. He will continue to attack Modi with senseless accusations on slightest excuse available.

For Congress in general with the current bunch of leaders, it is staying in power that's important. Doesn't matter, if they have to do crimes or anti-national activities. It's like - apna kaam banta, bhand mein jaye janta. If you see the goodwill release of terrorists, they did it just for optics without any compulsion, I am sure they would have been warned several times by the intelligence/saner people etc.

God help India if the CONs come to power!
