The fact that we have allowed ourselves to even be put into this situation is a sad testament to the ineptitude of our diplomacy and rank corruption of our defense eco-system.

Now we are caught between a sleeping giant (Russia) and an unhinged bully (US) while our biggest threat (China) laughs in the background and our diplomats still bleat ineffectively about an unrepentant fraud (Pak) in archaic language(who still talks in Latin terms while doing press conferences other than our IAS/IFS types???) to an uncaring audience (UN / G20 / et all) .

Meanwhile, the country is being made an international laughing stock thanks to pissful and leftist propaganda going unchallenged and mob violence is answered only with "grave concern" rather than an iron hand of law while Facebook posts elicit instant crackdowns.

Nope... diplomats past and present have done their job and they can’t be blamed. They did what they can, given the limitations they were presented with.

We should not forget that the India we see today is very much different from India pre-2000.

At this point in time there is nothing to indicate that we are not on the right path. It does not seem that way because most of people read opeds instead of going to the source of the information.

As time passes diplomacy was adopt accordingly.

We are probably the only major power in the world that so utterly neglected its indigenous defense industry. I still cannot fathom how this country that got it so right on space research, got it so wrong on defense research. We must make it a national resolution to get off this dependence on foreign defense systems.

Pure neglect it seems. After 1971 we kinda believed we have won over Pakistan and China's dangerous rise only became apparent after 2000s. Meanwhile our defense budget remained pitiful. We dreamt big but funds never matched.
And foreign suppliers were always ready to help.

We got it right in defense where we were desperate and without foreign offers in missiles from prithvi to Agni V to k4 to ASAT.
We build the atom bomb and thermonuclear bomb. We are way ahead than most western nations on ballistic missile defence.

The pattern is unmistakable we have neglected funding of conventional weapon systems while prioritizing strategic/ prestigious systems.

We have build SSBN already and are designing SSN yet we can't build an SSK??

We have designed and build an aircraft fucking carrier and ye we need foreign participation to build LHD and tankers??

We have fielded a 4th gen jet and yet have to import basic trainers?

A low defense budget forces us to chose priorities and these priorities are always 1st strategic platform ( nuke related) or 2nd prestigious platform ( so politicians can harp about global power as aircraft carrier) all else is funded with pittance and then ultimately imports are preferred.

True. Even in 1990s we chose to bailout Russia with whatever we had. That's how su30 MKI was born. But we always maintained alternative sources to soviets. That's why we bought jaguar and mirage . Also our aircraft carriers were British and we got subs from Germany.

But yes we were very poor. To think that when we embarked on lca project in 1983 our entire gdp was under 200 billion usd and now when we are embarking on AMCA we are a 3 trillion $ economy. We sure dreamt big.

USSR accepted payment in grains and with delays but we paid in full mostly as we were never really a proper subordinate ally like paki were to USA.

But the good thing is that now we are focusing on conventional platforms with lca proliferation into mk1a ,mwf ,nlca and AMCA hopefully they will be funded well. Artillery are finally indegenios. Warships mostly are . Hopefully tanks , submarines will follow soon.

Just curious, have you ever travelled in those rusty accident prone old state transport busses(they were in use till early 90’s)?

On the aspect of country punching above our weight was valid until mid 80’s, up until Indira Gandhi’s death in 84 even congress was a nationalist party. It’s only after Rajiv became prime minster both leftists and secular forces got good hold over Delhi power corridors.

Even though Indira Gandhi did emergency, authoritative and violent regimes were par for the course around the world at that time. Idi Amin was always on news, British civil war with Irish was still on.

So basically things are not that bad for now.

Yes I did. They used to vibrate so good as a child I loved to get sleepy in them.

We were doomed economically by the time Rajiv was assassinated. Our PSU failed to drive the economy. Still we had quite the weight till 1970-80 as China a p5 member had a smaller economy compared to us.

We were always heavyweight if not economically than geographically and demographically. No one wanted war with US neither USA nor UK or USSR. They only wanted on their side and used coercion for it. Mao was a madman whose irrational war of 62 poisoned India China relationship for a century .

At that time all nations grew fast with autocratic regimes . Entire East Asia , china after 1978 , Singapore etc.

Even western nation had fast growth under empires although much earlier than Asia.

It was brave to go for full democracy with such poverty and illiteracy. We should have implemented democracy in phased manner.

1950-70 only educated vote ( atleast high school / metric whatever that was called)

70-90 at least middle school. (6-8 years of formal schooling).

90-2000 at least 5th standard to vote.

From 2000 universal franchise.

This would led a race among parties to educate their vote banks it will also lead to much more disciplined government and better economy with proper reforms in agriculture , land and labour.

Anyway past is gone here we are. Modi must address these fatal flaws of basic things water , electricity , roads and most importantly quality education in schools including vocational education mostly. His mission now is home for everyone and piped water to every home. Finally someone who is addressed the fundamental of national growth.

S-400 deliveries to India will be in 5 shipments from end 2020-25. Advance payment expected soon, we have found a permanent payment route solution with India, says Russia’s FSMTC deputy director Vladmir Drozhzhov.

Russia claims it has sanction-proofed India’s $5.2 billion S-400 Triumf missile deal — and expects the first advance payment “soon”. Details in this report by @ShivAroor from Moscow:

So much for all the claims that India had already paid some of it.

Iaf officers are going Moscow later this year from training for s400. How would training happen without paying for it. These reports are inconsistent. Anyway s400 is coming that much is certain.

India will not tell how the payment is done or when it is done. There is no need for anyone other than India and Russia to know about it. This doesn't mean you get to make any assumptions. India doesn't care for CAATSA in any way. So, no need to speculate whether India will back off or not
