it doesnt coincide with our program....... our akash n ashwin & some Israel brought and some codeveloped and this s400 its multi layer security....... from 15 km radius to 400km radius defense.if one even misses other are there to take flying thing down
we have two separate seups for misslile defence. Askash etc for fighter jets and cruise missiles and AAD and PAD for ballistic missile defence. S400 is the jack of all trades..and probably the master of none..why buy it when we have our own specilised setup.it would have made sense if the procurement was a few years back but now it is unnecessary since our systems are ready.

I believe we shall not use the S 400 as a BMD, rather we shall be using it as a VLRSAM and area dominance/ air superiority asset.
Like I said earlier each battery of S400 can conceivably free a squadron from air defence duties hence increase availability of assets for use as offensive airpower.
Cant akash/barak/other LRSAMunder development also do the same thing?

Think of price and our capability to pay at $500 a system. India needs twelve systems as is published in various websites.

It can come only if we cancel Rafale.

India planning acquisition of advanced Russian air defence missile system

In what could be a game-changing arms acquisition, India is planning to acquire the new-generation Russian S-400 Triumf air defence missile systems that can destroy incoming hostile aircraft, stealth fighters, missiles and drones at ranges of up to 400-km.

Sources say the defence acquisitions council (DAC), chaired by Manohar Parrikar, will "soon" take up the proposal moved by the IAF to purchase around a dozen S-400 long-range systems from Russia.

The project is at an initial stage at present. But it will be a government-to-government contract when it is finalized, with the S-400 systems being inducted over several years," said a defence ministry source.

The procurement proposal comes ahead of Parrikar's impending visit to Russia, which will be followed by the Modi-Putin summit in Moscow in December. It also comes around a year after China sealed a $3 billion deal with Russia for acquisition of six S-400 batteries.

China is slated to get the S-400 batteries, which is designated `SA-21 Growler' by NATO and rivals the anti-ballistic missile capabilities of the US Patriot PAC-3 system, from 2017 onwards.

Countries locked in territorial disputes with China in the East and South China Seas, ranging from Japan and Taiwan to Vietnam and the Philippines, are all worried at the prospect of the People's Liberation Army getting such a force-multiplier to dominate the airspace. India obviously is also wary of China acquiring such a military capability, even if it is defensive in nature, since it can make all the difference during a conflict.

The S-400 basically has three kinds of missiles, with different capabilities, that can fly at supersonic and hypersonic speeds to intercept all kinds of targets at ranges from 120 to 400-km. Russian experts even proclaim the S-400 surface-to-air missile (SAM) system can "radar lock and shoot down" stealth fifth-generation fighters like the American F-35 jets.

India, on its part, is now belatedly trying to plug the gaping holes in its airspace surveillance and defence network with progressive induction of a wide array of sensors and weapons.

With both IAF, tasked with the country's air defence, and Army saddled with increasingly obsolete air defence weapons, the ongoing induction of the indigenous 25-km range Akash area defence system has come as a major relief for them.

Induction of the Israeli Spyder low-level quick-reaction missile systems, with a 15-km range, is now planned from 2016-2017 onwards. The project was stuck since the Tatra trucks -- on which the missile systems were to be mounted - had got enmeshed in corruption scandals. The contract was recently amended to replace the Tatra trucks with Tata trucks.

Deliveries of the medium-range SAM systems jointly developed by Israeli Aerospace Industries and DRDO, with an interception range of 70-km, will also begin from 2016-2017.

Along with induction of these weapons, IAF is also now expanding its fully-automated surveillance network called IACCS (integrated air command and control system) to the entire country, with the cabinet committee on security recently approving another Rs 8,000 crore for the project. Eventually, the Army and Navy's Akash Teer and Triguna air defence networks will be integrated with the IACCS.

The S 400 has two type of missiles one has the Active seeker another has semi active, used to kill Ballistic, Cruise missiles and Fighters at long range.

means the engagement range far from the base .. mostly above 200 kilometers, currently IAF has no such Missile defense systems.

The upcoming MRSAM has the on board seeker for fire and forget, while Akash still need ground Radar's guidance for it's entire flight, I'm still thinking as someone said the Akash can be guided in Terminal phase using AEWCS ..and I think it's still on books

I think we merely buy one or squadron of S 400, which reduces the use of Fighters and 24x7 availability rates and less maintenance costs compared to Fighter jets.

each squad consists of six to eight VLS launchers and associated equipment like Grave stone, Big bird, Re loader, command post and power generators.

and don't worry ..I sure it comes less than some $1.5 billions

As they said it's a G-G deal, then what the need of DAC clearance, they can move on contract negotiations and cabinet approval and deal inking ..which can be easily done before the PM's visits to Russia.

If they move via DAC and other things , then we have to wait for 2025 to operate first S 400

can this achievable @bengalraider

I believe we are already doing something of this sort with our plan for an intergrated airspace network(ACCS) that will integrate all of the civilian and military radars in India to provide a seamless view of Air traffic in the region. This is the kind of integration that Taiwan already possesses to deter Chinese incursions.

NEW DELHI: Indian Air Force (IAF) tonight signed a nearly Rs 8,000-crore deal with state-run Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the extension of its programmes integrating all civil and defence radars across the country.

The IAF has already established five nodes of the IACCS (Integrated Air Command and Control System) in the Western Sector, bordering Pakistan.

The S-350 is more compact and carries more missiles. With 150 Km range Mr-SAm I don't know why we need this. DRDO can deliver 250 km range SAM from AAD if required.

Because the 400 km (40N6 missile) lets us have the option of Destroying Pakistani airplanes as soon as they take off from almost all Pakistani Airbases!

What is in the works is a complete multi modal air defence network as described below
1)AA guns / Tungushka/ manpads- 0 to 10km interception
2) SPYDER- 15km interception, this is to be replaced the the MAITRI SAM once development is complete.
3)AKASH- 25 km interception
4)MRSAM/BARAK 8- 90KM
5) S400- 120 to 400km

There is a complete overhaul of our air defence network in progress, the S400 is simply the top end of that overhaul!
