After 20 years the US has lost only 2000 odd soldiers in Afghanistan. If US would maintain a presence, then India could send a few thousand soldiers to prevent urban areas from falling to the taliban. We need to remember that after all these years of fighting the Taliban have captured zero cities. And as you said, under UN flag would be ideal.
Until Afghanistan is not under ISI controlled Taliban's thumb, we deny Pakistan strategic depth..
