Forces in J&K on alert over ultras’ novel arms strategy

While a tight security cover is in place in Jammu & Kashmir to prevent any untoward incident after the Centre’s move on Article 370, the security establishment is worried over a “new trend” of terrorists sneaking in from across the Line of Control (LoC) and leaving behind weapons ostensibly to be retrieved by terrorists active within the State.
One such incident took place in Uri earlier this week where the Army recovered some AK-47s after a firefight with militants who came in and then ran back towards Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK). Given the rugged terrain there, it is feared that many more weapons must have found their way to the users in the preceding days to bolster the depleting firepower of the militants.
Incidentally, the recovery of three AK-47s, three pistols and nearly 15 under barrel grenades took place a day after the Government announced its decision on Article 370 on Monday. At least three to four militants came in after the Pakistan Army gave them covering fire. An Indian army patrol had a brief firefight with the militants who escaped into POK leaving behind the weapons.
Admitting that the Army was lucky to foil the bid and recovered the weapons, officials in the security establishment on Saturday did not rule out the possibility of many more weapons already reaching the militants through the local network. They also said "on the face of it the recovery of only three AK-47s and three pistols may look small but the new trend is definitely is a cause of concern."
As nearly all the ingress routes in North Kashmir are located in rugged terrain dotted by ravines and dense jungles, covering each and every inch is difficult. Moreover, dense fog and cloudy weather provides excellent umbrella to the militants to either infiltrate or drop the weapons, officials said.
The new phenomenon also indicated that there is apparently a dearth of arms and ammunition for the militants in the Kashmir Valley, witnessing an unprecedented security clampdown in view of repeal of special status to State under Article 370.
Even though no infiltration bid or adopting the new tactic of leaving behind weapons to be retrieved by the local network came to light in the last few days, the Army is not leaving anything to chance. The counter-terrorism and counter-infiltration grid has been further strengthened.
Security forces brace up for action along the LOC and fear terror attack actively backed by the ISI and Pakistan Army in any part of the country in the aftermath of abrogation of article 370. This comes in the backdrop of the corps commanders of Pakistan Army discussing the issue on Tuesday last.
Faced with domestic pressure, the Pakistan Army is likely to go in for 'visible action' on the border in terms of ceasefire violations on the one hand and stoking terrorist violence in Jammu and Kashmir on the other. The possibility of such incidents taking place in other parts of the country was also feared, they said.
Chairing the Corps Commanders meet, Pakistan Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa had said his troops are prepared to "go to any extent" to help Kashmiris. The meeting had single point agenda of Kashmir. "Pakistan Army firmly stands by the Kashmiris in their just struggle to the very end. We are prepared and shall go to any extent to fulfill our obligations...," Bajwa told the army commanders.
In a statement, the Army said the forum fully supported the Pakistan Government's "rejection of Indian actions" regarding Kashmir. On Monday, Pakistan had condemned and rejected the Indian government revoking Article 370 of the Constitution and vowed to exercise "all possible options" to counter India's "illegal" and "unilateral" step.
Explaining the rationale for the all powerful Pakistan Army to resort to such strategy of turning the heat on the LOC, officials said here domestic compulsions will force it not to 'keep quiet' and the LOC may see relentless cease fire violations within the next few days.
Moreover, if the Pakistan Army does not do anything to stoke trouble in India, it may lose the support of the Pakistan based terrorist groups including the Jaish-e-Mohammad(JeM)and Lashkar-e-Tayyaba(LeT). These two groups are active in Jammu and Kashmir. Also, the ISI and Pakistan Army was already using social media to spread misinformation and the Indian security agencies were taking counter measures, they said.
