Description: The PB500A1 is a cost-effective, 1,000-lb class, laser-guided bunker-buster bomb based on the Mk-83 dumb bomb fitted with a hard target penetration warhead and laser guidance kit. IMI designed the warhead to penetrate up to two meters of reinforced concrete. The same warhead can be provided to air-to-surface missiles. The PB500A1 bomb is intended to penetrate and destroy military bunkers, headquarters and other hard targets with pinpoint accuracy while reducing collateral damage. The PB500A1's precision is similar to the United States' JDAM and Paveway smart bombs.

Apparently, the PB500A1 bomb was employed by the Israel Air Force (IAF) during summer 2007 air campaign against Hezbollah militia in Lebanon achieving poor results. Some reports suggest that Hezbollah's fortifications in Southern Lebanon resisted the IAF's air strikes paving the way for guerrilla counter-attack and ultimately the failure of Israel Armed Forces. Afterwards, Israel ordered the GBU-28 bunker buster bomb and the GBU-39 mini-bunker buster bomb through the United States Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program.
