First priority is our citizens they are vast in numbers and spread out.

They will also be the most difficult to move as many will try to take their assets and belongings with them. Once we have evacuated them we will be in a better position.

Consulate staff is trained in rapid evacuation and de indication plus kabul airport and the nearby areas are still under the protection of US military so they will be safe.

Consulates in other regions might close sooner though the govt will try to keep them operational as long as possible as they serve as bases for our intelligence agencies. If am not mistaken India has the highest number of consulates in Afghanistan for this very reason.

Shouldn't such a strategically important piece of land guarded heavily?
They won without any fight?
This area was under tajik warlords.
Taliban offensive in this region is quiet surprising.
Taliban strong hold is Helmand province approximately North of fata of porkistan.
This offensive is done mostly from area of Gilgit baltistan. Porki have changed demographic of baltistan by settling pastuns.

I did'nt follow your line of thought.

Are you saying pakistans nukes and stand-off with india prevented US from pursuing a path to balkanise india?

I don't understand that logic.

Also, in my comment I suggesed punishing pak for it pursuing nukes ie liberating pok or taking lahore before pakistan acheives credible nuclear deterence.

We knew for decades that pakistan was looking into nuclear weapons after being smashed in '71.
I am not trying to make a villain of the US. But the fact is during the Cold War repeated threats were made to balkanise India. Why do you think that the US invites people from all parts of the globe to emigrate to the US. The foremost reason is to attract the best talent and act as a force multipler for US economic growth. The contribution of the highly educated and skilled immigrant population to the US economic miracle is substantial.

The secondary reason for getting immigrants from other countries to settle in the US is to use them as a tool to influence policy making in their home country. There have been many examples of highly successful NRI's from the US being given plum posts in Indian institutions. While not doubting the patriotism of the NRI's the fact is that they do largely follow the official line of the US administration. We have even had examples of US settled citizens being made Presidents and Prime Ministers of their home country.

There is an extremely large population of people of Indian origin in the US. They come from several states in India and may be brain washed to further the agenda of the US administration.

A glaring example is the Khalistan movement. Overseas Sikhs in the US, Canada and the UK were the first to raise the demand for Khalistan. The name of Jagjit Singh Chouhan is synonymous with the first demand for Khalistan. He was an NRI. Do you really think that the host country could not have prevented these groups from carrying out an anti India campaign. Unfortunately the so called developed countries do not shy away from using these groups to put pressure on India.

The US has substantial leverage over many countries including India by virtue of hosting their ex citizens. All of these Americans of Indian origin will have family links in India and can potentially shape public opinion.

Now if the Extreme Right Wing lobby in the US decides to try to balkanise India what options do we have. We can try to raise the costs to an unacceptable level for the opposite party.

To give an example in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union attempts were made to further divide Russia by using the Muslims in the Caucasus region to revolt against Moscow. The Chechens were a prime example.

The Russians in addition to combating the Chechen insurgency militarily also started to loosen control over their fissile material inventory. There were many seizures of uranium in Europe and Turkey which were being smuggled by Islamic groups including Iranians. The fissile material could be made into dirty bombs by terrorists. For proof please search the Internet on radioactive materials smuggling incidents. The Americans and the CIA were alarmed and requested talks with the then Russian government. Though no proof will be publicly available many believe that Russian Intelligence orchestrated the pilferage of fissile material to force Washington to reduce support to the Chechens. Just imagine, if terrorist groups built a dirty radioactive bomb and detonated it in the US.

Didn't the Pakistanis regularly use the nuclear blackmail card against India in the past. An rabidly anti West nuclear Pakistan controlled by Islamic Fundamentalists is not in the interest of the West. They will most probably share their nuclear weapons knowledge with other Muslim countries and jeapordise the US control of the Middle East. India has enough assets in Pakistan to influence events in Pakistan. Indian cooperation is needed to control Pakistan.

We are taking about an hypothetical situation. But it is true and verifiable that people in past US administrations did threaten India with balkanisation.
