India has chosen engines for fighter FGFA

23/09/2011

The Air Force has selected engines for India's promising fighter FGFA, produced jointly with the Russian design bureau "Dry" based on the T-50 (PAK FA) . What kind of power plants is in question did not specify. We know only that the selected engines will be more powerful than the AL-41F1 ("Item 117"), which will be installed on the Russian T-50 in the first stage.

Presumably, we are talking about engines, known as "product 117C." These power plants will be mass-produced Su-35s, 48 "‹"‹of which the Russian Defense Ministry must receive until 2015. FGFA new power plants will be supplied by the Indian Air Force, as expected, with 2017-2018 year. Previously, the Defense Ministry of India announced that it intends to acquire up to 250 new combat aircraft.

Once the needs of the Indian Air Force in FGFA will be met, will begin delivery of the fighter in the world market. In August 2011 the President of the United Aircraft Corporation Mikhail Pogosyan said that the need for the world market for fighters such as T-50, including Russia, is estimated at 600 units - except for the Russian Air Force and India will export about 200 aircraft.

The contract for the joint development FGFA was signed by Russia and India in late 2010. The Indian version of the aircraft will be created based on the PAK FA, but it will be different from the last two-seater cockpit, engines and airborne equipment. Earlier it was reported that the first flight is scheduled for FGFA 2015. According to the Korean media, FGFA (according to other T-50) is a member of the Air Force tender for the supply of South Korea's combat aircraft.

There are 2 variants of the AL-41. One is the 117S meant for Su-35 and the other is the 117 meant for PAKFA. A new engine supposedly called Type-30 or something will be the engine meant for PAKFA. So, I don't understand what the article is talking about.

The article says India will have the 117S meant for the Su-35 as the default engine in the PAKFA. That would make the Indian FGFA inferior to the Russian version unless the FGFA is lighter than the PAKFA. Or it is possible the article may very well be talking about the Super 30 upgrade which means the 117S is possible.

Probably ACM is talking about AL-41F1 variant which can give 160+Kn. That means new core will be developed further?

The autor is mixing up some things, because it was reported before that unlike Russian airforce that might get the first Pak Fa very early and with the a version of the 117 engine, IAF wants a true new developed 5th gen engine. Recent reports from Russia also confirmed that a new developed engine is on offer and they even want us to join the development, which obviously hints to another development that is possibly only with Indian funding. However, I guess that is was the author meant as well, while mixing up things of MKI inbetween.
A co-development on the engines would hopefully done by HAL and not GTRE again, HAL has the experience with Russian engines and should be able to be a useful partner. Also since Kaveri engine development failed and we won't have an alternative to Russian engines anyway, a co-development would give us much more control about upgrades, or spares. The more on FGFA we can co-develop, or costomize with Indian/western parts the better the chances higher capability, less dependence on Russian after sale support and less operational costs as well.

117S - 142 KN
117 - 154 KN
Type 30 - 20% more than 117 which is around 185 KN.

I am sure we will get whatever Russians going to have in their version or probably better with some help from Israel and France.
