So for us external observers there will be no overt signs of a power struggle, until one day it suddenly happens.

Xi policies have made China the pariah of the world today and US policy towards China has hardened to the extent that I doubt whether it makes a difference now as to who wins the US elections. If Biden wins, he will be a puppet of the deep state and what the deep state wants to preserve above all is the primacy of the US dollar system. That requirements trumps any commercial consideration of a US high tech manufacturer to do business with China. The commercial and financial difficulties that the confrontation with the US have caused and will cause for China will add to the simmering discontent about Xi policies and will be prevalent in China's ruling and business elite who will bide their time. Ultimately whether Xi has been able to cement the loyalty of the armed forces and the national police force is anybody's guess.
