India’s under-appreciated role as sword arm of the UN

India’s immense contribution to the ONUC (French: Opérations Des Nations Unies au Congo), one of the United Nations’ (UN) most complex peacekeeping missions in its 75-year existence, has been ill-documented, even in histories of the country’s international relations. India’s participation in ONUC lasted four years, from 1960, but was accelerated rapidly in 1961 after a series of crises threatened to debilitate the mission. India contributed diplomatic and military expertise, troops, food and aid. Why is this episode so neglected and what does that mean for India at the UN currently?

A love story beyond bounds of time , india and unsc permanent membership

India played a major role, the single largest of any one country, in preventing the Katanga secession in the Congo/Zaire. Which was sought by a few Western countries. But one thing India and other sympathetic countries couldn't prevent, was the killing of Patrice Lumumba. The shenanigans behind the scenes by the US, UK and Belgium was just too much.

UNSC adopts first-ever statement on maritime security under India’s presidency

4-5 minutes

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Monday adopted the first-ever presidential statement on maritime security soon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a virtual open debate focused on global cooperation for maritime security. India, as the UNSC president this month, noted the threats to maritime safety and security and called upon the members to consider implementing the 2000 UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime.
