BEIJING: India has come under renewed pressure to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) as it tries to create a free trade zone among member countries. India is an observer at the SCO, but has been reluctant to become a full member.

The proposal is already on the agenda of the SCO, and two of its full members China and Russia have begun initial discussions on it, sources said.

Chinese officials, in particular, are pushing for the proposal because the uncertain economic conditions in Europe and the US pose serious danger to its exports.

i dont know why India is going away from sco. it should get involved in it and should raise the voice of other groups in region like saarc and asean to pressurize china to open up its economy for other nations. china will get a beating in its own house. moreover it will provide a platform for easing off tensions between india and china on many instances. which will be good to avoid unnecessary provocations

Russia hopes India will 'soon' join SCO - Lavrov

MOSCOW, November 17 (RIA Novosti)

Russia hopes that India will soon become a full member of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Thursday after talks with his Indian counterpart Shri S.M. Krishna.

"Russia supports the resolution of the issue of India's transfer from observer status to full membership in the SCO as soon as possible. We have expounded on this position repeatedly and expect to achieve progress in the issue soon," Lavrov said.

The SCO - an intergovernmental security body - comprises China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Iran, India, Mongolia and Pakistan hold observer status.

its ok the sco has made it clear unless India pakistan solve their issues they will be not allowed. This seems to be a more practical approach.

Russians are very smart. If India joins SCO, Russia would have a good partner to balance China's dominance in that organization, at the same time, Russia is taking away a swing country from US comp which essentially weakens US alliance against Russia and China.
