1. Olympics are never profitable, only time it has been profitable was when it was held in existing infra.
2. We will be the lowest medal winning host. We need to get better at olympics before hosting. Atleast start getting 3-5 golds.
3. Most of the Indians don't even know most of the sports in olympics, people will hardly turn up for most of the events where India is not there.
4. India doesn't have a single world class city to host. On top of that they will be hosting in Ahmedabad. Not sure what kind of experience will that be.
5. Ahmedabad has never hosted any big multi sport event. There is not even that much hotel capacity in that city since its not a major tourist hub or not even that big of international business hub like Mumbai or Bangalore.
6. I am actually less concerned about the actual venues, If BJP is in govt. till at least 2029, and in state they will stay longer, I think venues contruction will go better than CWG. Although, mismanagement of cricket world cup makes me nervous.
7. I am more concerned about city being dirty, having inadequate infra and our public being assholes to visitors.

TLDR: We know it won't be profitable, but I am more concerned that it will be mismanaged/ visitors won't have great experience causing more disrepute like CWG. Ahmedabad should first host Asian games or CWG.
China didn't host olympics in 2008 to make some profit, the main reason was to showcase a modern China to a global audience. Same will be for India. A good Olympics has the potential of increasing international tourism.

Points 4 and 7 are the only relevant concerns and that should be taken care of by 2030.

We shouldn't do that. There is very practically no ROI in organizing the Olympics, instead use the money for something else.
Lets not think about short term profit and loss as we are a country which does not have many Olympic level facilities for our athletes.

This big will actually help us build facilities that can produce athletes for decades to come.

The Olympics won't increase tourism, but tourist safety, hygiene, and good infrastructure will. The latter three are the sole reasons why India is not a top tourist destination.

Time and again, it has been proven that hosting the Olympics is simply a huge waste of money. Virtually none of the countries that have hosted the Olympics have made a profit from it.

In a country like India that lacks basic minimum running infrastructure in many places, including major cities like Delhi and Mumbai, it would be a criminal act to devote tens of billions of dollars towards hosting the games."

Ya'll Nibbiars i don't think the Olympics is going to be hosted in India anytime soon. Even FIFA has better chances than this. The CWG has dented our image regarding that. Better to revive the Afro Asian Games. Would be much affordable and will have similar impact on the sports development.

It's in 2036, not now. Hygiene, safety, cleanliness and excellent infrastructure are a prerequisite for hosting Olympics. The tens of billions of dollars will spent on infrastructure mostly.

So yes, hosting Olympics will increase tourism.

Ya'll Nibbiars From the Quora.

During the Olympic Games, Rio de Janeiro received 1.2 millions visitors. According to Rio’s city hall, 410 thousands of those were not from Brazil.

During FIFA world cup Rio received 886 thousands tourists, 471 thousands of those were foreign tourists.

Of course FIFA world cup have more than one host city, so there were much more tourists than this. Also, Rio received less tourists from Brazil because there were lots of other cities hosting FIFA World Cup.

Other cities that hosted FIFA world Cup received less tourists than Rio:

São Paulo 510,000
Belo Horizonte 355,000
Brasilia 490,000
Porto Alegre 350,000
Recife 400,000
Manaus 260,000
Cuiaba 120,000
Natal 180,000
Salvador 700,000
So, in number of tourists, World Cup can be considered bigger.

If you talk about audience, both events are watched for about half of the Earth. Fifa World Cup reached 3.2 billions viewers, while Olympic Games 3.5 billions.

And FIFA cost much less to host than the Olympics and has same or better impact on the economy and also could generate more foreign tourists as the Football fans are a bunch of craziest lot there. And also as the Infrastructure is distributed al9ng multiple cities less risk of being white elephant if a Balance is kept in utilizing old stadium renovating them, rebuilding old stadium and only few new ones.
Just like Olympics, you have to build good stadiums (across multiple cities) and have western standard hygiene and cleanliness (in all those cities).

What I want to say is, for hosting any global event, hygiene and cleanliness need to be excellent. Is it possible to do that in 10 years? Almost impossible TBH.

CWG is an irrelevant event; has nothing to do with the IOC who themselves don't care about anything other than their potential revenue - else, no way they would host events in china, of all. They are even adopting cricket (despite its limited global reach) just because the supposed broadcasting rights would be sold for ~US$ 200 million (the current deals are worth US$ 20 million) in India alone. If we are serious we would get it; the IOC office bearers don't care about image.

While awarding Beijing the rights to host Olympics the IOC officials bluntly raised concerns over the poor AQI of the city. Cheenis simply halted productions in their plants for a month to artificially lower the AQI of Beijing. Once the games were done and dusted they restarted their plants and AQI went back to where they were a month before.

As for Rio 2016 there is an entire wikipedia article over the issues; from fears over potential Zika virus epidemic (a bunch of tennis players and golfers gave the games a miss) to poor sanitation facilities , clogged open sewers outside slums and pics of animal carcasses floating in rivers - they had their own share of controversies.

Unless you are uber rich Japan or US - such issues will always be there and there would be temporary cosmertic changes to brush it all under the carpet before the games commence.

Brazilian cities are an order of magnitude cleaner than our cities. Even then, there were so many controversies. That's what everyone is concerned about. Right now, there's no way any global event will be hosted in India. But things should become better by 2036.

If Ahmedabad manages to win the bid (low probability) and we organise Olympics properly, it will be a huge boost to our perception and global image (just like China in 2008). So, we seriously bid and improve infra, sanitation, hygiene and cleanliness during this decade..

There are two scenarios:

One is that the Olympics lights a fire under our ass and we seriously improve urban planning and sanitation. At least in the top 20-25 cities.

Second is we adopt the same old shortcuts of covering up the slums by building some walls and do some temporary cleanup drive in the cities few months before the olympics and call it a day. Just like what we did for G20 and all other vents.

I'm really hoping for the first one but you never know.

its better to host olympics in new build cities like gift city....there r lands nd properly build infrastructure (as indian standard). we get land to build proper Olympic village. it will also used for future. coz new build cities hv not much sports facilities. so we should build olympics village on new build nd planned cities, so it will used after Olympics also.

I hope we do get to Host 2036.

Good thing is they are not proposing usual Delhi or any other metro city but Ahmedabad which is 100 times better for hosting such event.
It has never hosted any such event. Doesn't even get foreign tourists. On top of it its 100 year anniversary of Nazi Olympics.

So what?

When did this become a condition that a country should have hosted Olympics already in order to host it again?
What is this 100th anniversary of Nazi Olympics BS!!

Ahmedabad is a mid city, with mid infra, no booze, trash nightlife, limited hotels.
