What are the actual challenges of making a domestic twitter, facebook and tiktok? Software wise there doesn't seem to be anything complicated in social media, all you need to do is allow account creation and media hosting. Is the main issue the sheer number of servers needed to host all this data and computing?

Any such platform won't make a profit in the initial years and it'll probably take those companies at least a decade to even break even.

Absolutely no private players in India would be willing to invest in a project that won't yield profits for at least a decade.

American companies were able to do so because silicon valley has investors who see the long term prospects of such projects and China was able to do it with TikTok because CCP threw it's weight behind it.

We are well past the time when a new Social Media platform apart from American or Chinese could work.

China started way back in late 90s and mid 2000s with their QQ platform and evolved into complete app by app replacement by early 2010s.

Now we are already very late to the party. We can only wish something indigenous comes and take over. most we can do it have local laws respected by these US based social media and have our data stored in Indian servers.

The only way Indian SM apps can succeed is through banning these foreign apps(temporarily) and letting the Indian ecosystem grow with state support(esp from top politicians and celebrities). We've had Koo(barely anyone logs into it now) and is as good as dead. Even the Brazilian president created an account but our MahaManav Vishwaguru didn't bother to create an account there and continues to use Twitter. We've had all the tiktok replacements like Sharechat, Moj, Josh etc which are also having a declining user base. More people are joining reels and YT shorts instead.

Indian business ad spend is also very low compared to the west, which means a lot more VC money is necessary to sustain the startups, which again is a lot more expensive in India due to the high interest rate regime. Not to mention our link language is mostly English which means any of our SM startups have to compete with the US startups which are awash with free low interest money from VC's and banks.

These Indian replacements are simply not good enough.

It cannot be organic. There's no way an Indian company can take back Indian netizens from the foreign SM giants on its own. It has to be a govt supported effort with private partners, and with government strong arming of Indian advertisers to move away from foreign SM platforms once the Indian alternative is present.

It's not about whether the app is crap or not. You could build a brilliant app but if leading Indian politicians themselves don't patronize domestic apps, then there's literally no point in building them. Any SM app needs critical mass to survive which is provided by influencers and politicians.

Making a social media app is not technical but a commercial challenge. Dozens of indigenous app open and close down every year since there is no crowd there (as for TikTok equivalent, we have made hundreds of them since banning of tiktok where lakhs of people actively do mujra everyday. Don't need more of that cringe).

Banning foreign apps to promote indigenous apps will rather disrupt SM usage in country since people will not be able communicate beyond the country. Simply, you cannot just compete by opening a new SM company. You have to supplant away existing monopoly of SM like FB & Twitter, from both India as well as foreign countries.
That's why Koo got cheers. It gained popularity in many foreign countries when twitter was snubbing government laws around world but lost thunder once Elon acquired twitter and dust settled.


Making a search engine similar to Google or YouTube is a challenging part though. We also have a company; our equivalent of Microsoft called Zoho.

The point we are trying to make is that we are well past the time when a new platform could come and disrupt any existing one. Although people always try and new one come and close every year as mentioned already here.

What you mentioned about the critical mass is true and the Politicians and the Celebs did their work honestly when Koo launched but the platform was so sh*t that no one remained there and moved back to Twitter.

From what i've observed, white women tend to be more masculine than other women. Asian women are the diametric opposite. Heck even Asian ladyboys (until you hear their voice) are more feminine that half the white female population. No wonder white guys are fixated upon Asian girls.
