I wish but Atlas is just too expensive. It will be either KC-390 or C-130J. I would go for IL-76 new version if we can produce it locally.
KC-390 hauls 14-15 tons, C-130J hauls less than 20 tons. IL-76MD-90A with a payload cap of 52 tons qualifies in the heavy category. I wanted the KC-390 to win the category awarded to the C-295. The Atlas is in the sweet spot. We shouldn't go for less payload cap than the Atlas after the C-295 order is concluded.

Payload for KC-390 is ~ 25 tons. The RFI in the best traditions of our services is suitably vague with payload range varying between 18-40 tons IIRC . What this does is open up the competition to a whole range of disparate aircraft where comparisons then become difficult .

IAF not interested in Russian one, C130 too expensive - both offer less opportunity for export and only & best option is KC-390, but the MTA acquisition take 1 decade+ to conclude. Russia may consider offering Il-276

Despite the MC-X program they have gone for C-390. Looks promising for the MTA.
If the MoD & IAF keep scratching their arses after sitting on the MTA acquisition file for years we'd have a situation where EMBRAER would have entered into a JV with RoK if they haven't already & when we finally select the KC-390 a decade from now , we'd be importing the initial lot or the whole lot from RoK whereas their JV would've progressed to export the transporter worldwide or at least to cater to the Asian markets & development of the next iteration of the KC-390 or perhaps a clean sheet design transporter much like the submarines they're hawking around the world today - all derived from TKMS including participation in our Project -75 I before they withdrew , when they got into a similar arrangment with TKMS much after we signed an agreement with HDW ( predecessor of TKMS into which it was merged ) in the 1980s where they continued to absorb technology & develop newer iterations whereas our program was junked due allegations of corruption during the RG adminstration.

No . C390 is better.

C390 hauls 14T at 5000km distance.
C130J hauls 15T at 3300km distance.

But both can manage 25-30T.

C-130J has more volumetric space as compared to the C-390 though the latter can carry more payload. See Rohit Vats's tweets I've posted earlier in this thread.

So the RFI for medium transport aircraft is to replace An32 and as well as IL76 also.

That would make A400 an optimal choice. C390 maybe much cheaper and perfect plane to replace An32, but since we are also looking to replace IL76, then only A400 makes remote sense
