Read this latest news -

http://www.flightglobal.com/article...-to-order-42-more-hal-produced-su-30mkis.html

The whole thing is getting confusing .......Just how many Sukhois is India going to have eventually ?? ......Is it 272 , or more than 300 ??

The original contract envisaged 40 to be produced in Russia and 140 in India. Then 10 more were added to be produced in Russia ,as Indonesia , which was going to buy them had suffered an economic crisis ,and could not afford them . When pak declared its intention of buying F-16s , we bought another 40 sukhois . In mid 2010 came the news of contract of another 42 to be signed with Russia ......and now another 42 to be made by HAL??

What is the actual number ??

Why only 400? Will that solve every problem?
we already have assembly lines in place for MKI..
problems never get solved with IAF they only get mitigated.

This statement proves either you are day dreaming or lack foresight about economics, operations, maintaince and our air-force.

How exactly youa rrived to this conclusion?
lol conclusion??
every project is delayed..just take a look at mig-21..we constantly keep on increasing their service period because production and induction of new jets is delayed by years.. by the time we get complete delivery of MRCA we will have to retire other old fighters too...

IAF will be getting 272 total sukhoi 30. Currently around 135 are operational and rest still building. Infact progress has been made to upgrade the existing operational sukhois.

Original 40 + 10 from Russia by 2002, 140 licensed by HAL 2018 revised to 2014. Then 40 for strategic forces command and 40 for carrying Brahmos, replacement 2 nos, put together 272.
HAL going at 26 per financial year at 2009-10 and orders were left for 105 jets till 2014. So for completion HAL has to go at 28 per annum. Then the next lot of 40 will drop to 20 per annum, then the brahmos lot the same 20 per annum. After which production facilities will be re-tooled for FGFA.
Actually due to low number of Su-30 brahmos platforms unit price ballooned to $ 108 million. India Scrapping mmrca and ordering 80 Brahmos carrying Su-30 would lower unit price considerably to around $ 86 million, near to that of unit price of heavy Eurocanards, with a stand-off missile capability that rivals their best. The price of Brahmos too would drop form $ 2.7 mil to somewhere reasonable with higher production orders and economy of scale. HAL can sustain a higher production rate of 40 per annum between fiscal years 2014-2018. So we have orders for 270 su-30, but to maintain balance without mmrca we need 350.

More Su-30MKI fighters to be purchased

Russian Aviaton » Wednesday January 12, 2011 20:01 MSK
The Indian air force is expected to place order for an additional batch of forty Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighters.

Speaking to the local media, Ashok Nayak, chairman of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) company that produces these aircraft locally in India under the Russian license, said he expects the air force to award HAL respective contract for more Su-30MKIs.

Ashok Nayak further said that a total of 180 such aircraft have already been ordered from HAL. Of those, 105 aircraft have been delivered so far. First of HAL-assembled Su-30MKIs was rolled out in November 2004.

Not long ago Indian defence ministry awarded Russian Su-30MKI manufacturers a direct contract for 40 such aircraft on top of the previously ordered. This follow-on order was formalized in the middle of the past year. The aircraft will be constructed by NPO Irkut's plant in Irkutsk and delivered to the customer through their developer Sukhoi and Russian state arms export agency Rosoboronexport.

Today, the Su-30MKI is the best asset in the Indian air force inventory and forms the backbone of its fighter squadrons. The service often sends its Sukhoi fighters abroad for various international exercises involving US and Asian allies.
