India's Hindustan Aeronautics rejects Russia's offer to jointly develop MS-21 airliner

The model of MS-21 airliner

India's Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is not interested in civil aviation projects and a proposal by Russia's Irkut aircraft corporation to jointly develop MS-21 medium-haul airliners, HAL Chief Finance Officer D. Shivamurti said on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Irkut President Oleg Demchenko told reporters the company was holding talks with the Indian state-owned military aircraft maker on the joint development of MS-21 airliners.

Shivamurti told reporters HAL's first priority was defense transport planes and said the company did not currently produce any passenger planes.

Irkut has held similar talks with Airbus but the parties failed to agree.

The Irkut MS-21 airliner is a three twin-engine jet aircraft with a capacity of 150-212 passengers being designed and produced by the Irkut corporation and the Yakovlev design bureau, part of Russia's United Aircraft Corporation. The model was presented for the first time at the Farnborough international airshow in 2010.

i think its a good move.
HAL should stick to defense field and try to complete projects on or before time.

Guys, let HAL focus on one thing. The government bodies are terrible in their focus. They make everything from soldiers uniforms to even as latest DRDO reports have it, mosquito repellant creams!!

This is the reason why no sarkari agency is able to make anything in time, in quality and in quantity: lack of focus.

This was a sensible decision. But NAL should be separated from DRDO/HAL as a separate holding for commercial planes only and it should have taken the offer of Irkut MS-21.

Good for russia , this lathargic idiots have created havoc in Airforce ranks with their sub standard service . Irkut has to tie up with Mahindra or Tata for the same

who knows same platform can be used as AWACS, AEW & even modified for aerial refueller , transport & Anti submarine warfare similar to boeing P-8

I would recommend Irkut to try having partnership with private companies like TATA's L&T or other Indian MNC's instead of HAL

HAL had no issues clinching Airbus deals. But has problems with making the entire aircraft.

I wonder if HAL will hold the same position if and when NAL's RTA-70 is ready for production.

Irkut will not form jv with private industry in this kind of big business. They are looking for financial burden. Hal rightly rejected it.

HAL cannot build more than Door Sheet for Airbus and lic manuf Do-228 and HS-748 thats the best they can do.

How on Earth are they suppose to build MS-21 that offers 15 % better performance over 737-800 class.

HAL should first build Saras can then compete internationally to sell it that is where they will realise where they stand and can better overcoming its weakness.

Right now what HAL is been doing is builidng Aircraft Civil and Military and has an assured market in Indian Military purchasing it very comfortable situation and like a spoilt brat it does not even do that well.

HAL should get out of its cozy comfort zone try to compete internationally and win deals , then they can think about developing 50 Seater or 100 Seater.

MS-21-200ER
MS-21-300ER
MS-21-400ER

3 variants of the MS-21. They're out to compete with the A320 series and are equipped with engines of similar thrust rating.
