Vertical landing on deck is much easy compared to vertical landing on shore. On deck we get winds 12 o clock and the downwash gets washed away so no power drop due to hot gas injection at last minute. But on shore winds can be from any direction and slowing the ac down from 120 kts to 30kts is the trickiest part as between these speeds it can just yaw out of contrrol and crash nose down if winds are not 12 o clock. In a normal aircraft you have to just adjust power to maintain your alpha but in this ac you have to do a lot of work with stick, nozzles and thrust to get it right everytime. Your own brain has to work faster than the fastest computer of the world to get it right in final 10 feet of vertical landing as it just drops from about 5 ft when hot gases start getting into the intakes due to recirculation/swirl caused by the downblast of nozzles.
One of the reasons why the X 32B was considered. This was solved by the Yakovlev design bureau by adding a lift fan so that it forms a wall of cool air so that hot air is not ingested.

I would like to see a side door less and wide open Dhruv too, it may not be required for Indian requirement but Foreign users might want such an arrangement such as side machine gun mounting.

I know there is none on the harrier, but how does it stop one learn a few tricks of hovering for a few hours and that too assisted by someone. It might help you get a feel before you move onto an aircraft. If I am wrong sorry , I am a common undergraduate civie.
A fixed one and a rotary wing have totally different controls and different flight characteristics. Granted the you have VTOL capability in the Harrier but you cannot "carry over" what you learn from one to the other.

India's CAG raps HAL for selling ALHs below cost price

India's Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has censured public-sector company Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for selling seven multirole Dhruv advanced light helicopters (ALHs) to the Ecuadorian Air Force (EAF) in 2008 for well below their manufacturing cost.

In its report, tabled in parliament on 9 August, the watchdog CAG revealed that HAL had underpriced the 5.5-ton ALHs by INR520 million (USD8.5 million). The deal was the first export order HAL had ever received for a complete platform.

HAL was further penalised INR60 million by the EAF for delays in delivering two helicopters, further adding to its losses on the deal.

In Economics it is called selling below cost, as you have fixed cost and variable cost for any product, fixed cost will remain fixed like cost of building, plant and machinery, salaries etc, no matter how many units you make this cost will remain fixed, only exception is that you have to increase production for that new plant is require that will increase your fixed cost. Variable cost is cost of raw material etc, which varies with number of units.

To kill competition, in short run it is possible to sell at Variable cost only after you recover fixed cost by selling in domestic market. This is popularly called dumping. China does it all the time. This kills local competition.

So they have done nothing wrong here, just price competition.

HAL seeks air ambulance modification for Dhruv
By SP's Special Correspondent

August 19, 2013
: In a strong indication that HAL has fresh orders for the Dhruv in hand, it has called for a speedy outsources project to modify the civilian variant of the advanced light helicopter (ALH) for air ambulance operations. The helicopter is to be transformed for the transportation of two patients on stretchers along with two medical personnel, including a doctor and allied life-saving equipment.

The Dhruv was recently involved greatly in humanitarian operations in Uttarakhand, and has been considered by at least two foreign nations (Peru and Turkey) for the air ambulance role. The HAL RFI is a confirmation that (a) the Peru and Turkey deals may have either fallen through or have been rekindled in some form, or (b) that there is a firm expression of interest from within the country from a civil operator for air ambulances, the requirement for which has gone up steeply in the country.

Dhruv clocks 1,00,000 flying hours

Advanced Light Helicopter Dhruv achieved a new milestone of flying one lakh hours today. The land mark has been achieved in the early hours today with the flying of helicopter IA 3104 of 301 Army Aviation Sqn (Spl Ops).
"One lakh hours flown by the machine is an awesome feat to achieve. It is a dream machine for any pilot," an HAL release said, quoting Lt Col Kapil Agarwal who completed the landmark flying hours.
ALH is being operated by Indian Air Force, Indian Army, Indian Navy, Coast Guard, BSF and state governments since 2002. Currently, more than 132 Dhruv helicopters are serving the Indian Defence Forces. HAL has also built 12 civil variant Dhruv helicopters and they are being used by its customers. The Ecuador Air Force (FAE) operates six Dhruv helicopters with their President choosing to fly in them.
