Re: INS Vikramaditya (Adm Gorshkov) aircraft carrier

The article talks about why Dhruv light helo cannot take place of Medium class Sea Kings..

It has nothing what you talking here, With out certification helo cannot be stationed on an active CV or Naval station..

Dhruv in IN are mainly for Search and Rescue ops..
It has everything to do with what I am talking here. Dhruv does not meet any of the requirements for a naval helicopter, it isn't even certified to land on a ship.

Re: INS Vikramaditya (Adm Gorshkov) aircraft carrier

Read the content, Not just the title..

ALH is not a replacement for Sea King, Different category different missions, You are just repeating the same..

=====================

ALH with IN serial are operating from Virrat and Frigate / Destroyers as Light Utility Helo, Photos are provided as proof..

Navy officials said that the ALH lacks the desired endurance for mission requirements. The navy is also not satisfied with the chopper's rotor blade folding mechanism for storage on warships and its payload capacity. The navy has launched a global hunt for new ASW helicopters to replace its ageing fleet of Sea King helicopters.

What about the medium chopper to replace Sea King. I though Sikorsky was a done deal.

Re: INS Vikramaditya (Adm Gorshkov) aircraft carrier

Thanks..

But, I read in internet (in India strategic - a article published on Aug-2012) that Navy isn't interested in buying the Dhruvs as it is not satisfied with Dhruv's performance..

The eight para in the Article reads as below.

"Significantly, the Navy had found the HAL-made Dhruv unsuitable because of excessive vibrations in the rotors as also their large size. The air draft generated by a flying machine and its stability are crucial for landing and takeoffs from moving ships, some of which sail at around 30 knots."

I couldn't post the link as A error message comes up "You are not allowed to post links"

You need to Post more replies to able to post links ..

========================

About the Vibration Issue >>

And finally, there is no truth to the belief that a vibration problem is the navy's main issue with the Dhruv. HAL designers say that, "With fine tuning of the Anti-Resonance Vibration Isolation System (ARIS), structural reinforcements and the introduction of Frahm dampers, the vibration problem has been resolved satisfactorily".
You can read more about it at here : Broadsword: The Indian Navy’s Dhruv: falling between two stools

===============

Navy is most supportive to National Defense Industry, Navy wanted to have Sea King Capability from Dhruv which was not possible due to Light vs Heavy catagory, Hence Navy launched an RFI for Sea King replacement..

Hi, the final issue with naval Dhruvs was folding of rotor blades and not vibration. Till that issue is solved, Dhruv has very little chance of operating on ships

Dhruv are meant for Search and recuse missions..

The Armed Version was found no enough for the mission Navy wanted that is equivalent to Sea King Range and Endurance..

The real issue with Dhruv was not just about folding blades but the under powered engines for dunking ops. This helo was found unfit for autohover, under powered to carry dunking sonar and torpedos and ASMs. The LCH might find its way on our LPDs.
Dhruv now has more powerful engine and manual folding of rotors in very short time is being proposed by HAL. Let us see what IN has to say to the more powerful engined Dhruv.

BTW, why can't HAL make a three engined Dhruv for IN? That will solve all objections of IN. That will provide that much needed capacity for torpedos, range/endurance and ASMs as it will allow for a higher take off weight. The cabin space is adequate for putting various sensors. Such a version will also meet the need of VVIP travel.

But Sir, Three engines might not be fitted on Dhruv's current air frame - too heavy and less space.
HAL might have to increase its size and many other things.
it wil be more of redesigning the helicopter again.

Yes, it will come with its own set of problems of redesign but can be done in reasonably short time.

That is why there is 10 ton MLH Program is there..

The Helicopter will be powered by twin engines and will feature blade folding option for ship deck operations. The variant for Army/IAF will support Air assault, Air Transport, Combat logistic, Combat search & rescue and casualty evacuation operations. The naval variant will be developed for Anti Submarine Warfare and Anti Surface Vessel Strike roles
Welcome to Aerospace Division of HAL
