Four Russians, US citizen arrested on Saudi state security charges

JEDDAH: Four Russians and one US citizen were arrested on state security charges, according to data from the Saudi Interior Ministry.

A ministry website showed that the Russian suspects, three of whom hold permanent residency in the Kingdom, were arrested on Dec. 25. The US suspect was arrested on Dec. 14.

The total number of detainees in terrorism and state security cases in Saudi Arabia stood at 5,311 people of 30 nationalities as of on Jan. 1.

“Since the beginning of December, 57 suspects of different nationalities, including 33 Saudis, seven Yemenis, six Pakistanis, four Russians, three Egyptians, one American, one Turk, one Syrian, and one Indian were arrested,” according to the Ministry of the Interior.

The Specialized Criminal Court in Riyadh on Thursday sentenced a Saudi citizen to 15 years in prison for supporting the Al-Qaeda terrorist group and Osama bin Laden, along with a charge of insulting the Saudi leadership, its scholars and citizens.
