I have to admit you are right. I am yet to witness a clamor, even among their educated classes, for their Hindu - buddhist past. If there has been any spurt of such interest, in the recent years, it can be attributed to couple of things.
1- Islamic world is undergoing a global crisis of perception. Since iconography of Islamic identity, like the Islamic monuments, these days dredge up negative visions, countries that can afford it fall back on their non Islamic past to soften the blow.
2- The rising stock of India, plus its growing middle class with disposable income, is once again drawing the world's interest towards India's ancient past. Eg - Much to the chargin of the buddhist elites, Sri Lanka is heavily promoting it's Ramayana circuit (sites in Sri Lanka which are associated with the epic) in India and Thailand. Cambodia is also promoting 'Angkor Wat' among indian holiday goers. I am told the 'Katsaraj' temple in Sindh attracts a good number of visitors from India and abroad. Pakistanis are just trying to ride a rising global wave.
