Wheather we say indian subcontinent or South Asian subcontinent both terminology are coined by foreigners.

Indian subcontinent was firstly used by Greek historians when Alexander the great during his invasion asked what is india then his historians said land beyond indus river .
Even Megasthenes a Greek wrote a book indica

Hindustan is as persian terminology they called sindhu as hindu and then tan was added later when turkic invader came to india. They used the word hindustan since turkic invader were greatly influenced by persian culture. This tan word was added just like turkic countries tajikistan uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, etc

Our name was aryaavart Or bharatvarsh. If we dig more in past we called it jumbu dweep.
Stan is also a Hindi word derived from Sanskrit Sthana , cognate with Avestan,Persian. Aryavartha is geographically limited (also Brahmavarta). Jambu dvipa, the land of the jamun tree is a religion connected word, all religions of ancient India use it...slightly different cosmology but common to all. Was used by Asoka to refer to his kingdom, plenty of references in old Kannada, the way it is used suggests clearly a greater India idea because there are references to Bharata kshetra being a part of Jambudvipa.

South Asia is a term used to replace pre-partition India, what India has been for thousands of years is now called “South Asia” after partitions. Unless India takes hard action against usage of this term it will continue to increase over time.
Hard action example number 8.
Effectiveness lvl - 100.
