These are the engines in development!

WS-13E: On prototype of FC-31 and tested on JF-17

WS-15: Developing for J-20 (180Kn!)

WS-19: developing for J-31/J-35 (110Kn!)

It looks like J-16 gets a new WS-10 variant!

Older WS-10 version on left. So many variants for WS-10 now including different ones for J-10, J-20 and new J-15 versions (including CATOBAR and twin seats) as well as the J-16.

China is always tinkering and improving this great engine family!

With WS-20 proven for Y-20 and possible WS-15 for J-20, the next big one is WS-19 for J-31/35! (Though it will probably have an interim engine first and that will probably be WS-13E.)

Watch this thread! lol

The WS-10 variants, WS-15 and WS-20 gets the most attention among new turbofans but there are even more projects!

WS-11: light engine being developed for JL-8 trainer

WS-17: light engine being developed for JL-10 trainer

WS-13E: improved variant of medium WS-13 engine being developed for JF-17 and as an interim for J-31/35. Already flight tested!

WS-19: advanced medium engine intended for the J-31/35, rumored to be 110kN and thrust-to-weight ratio of over 10! This is like the WS-15 of the medium engines!

WS-18: rumored to be already in serial production for H-6 and Y-20 variants. With WS-20 close to induction for Y-20, this will now be reserved for H-6 and new lower-bypass development can begin. (WS-18 has lower bypass requirements as a bomber turbofan that conflicts with the needs of a transport like Y-20. Variants of this should power H-20!)

CJ1000A: commercial high-bypass engine being developed for the C919. This is a gamechanger for China's civil space! So along with WS-15 and WS-19, it is among the most anticipated projects in China. It's demonstrator engine, CJ1000AX, was fully assembled in 2017 and was tested in 2018 with its core running at 6600 rpm. Projected power is at 125kN and induction around 2030.

This is the J-20 testbed! A different engine in each nacelle!

The question is whether the new engine here is a WS-10 TVC or the WS-15?

WS-10TVC has 15 petals ...

It would be great if you could also capture the improvements going on from one engine to the next- otherwise what's the point of claiming a tectonic shift in Chinese jet engine tech by merely counting petals and saying it's new? What are the parameters of these engines like durability, MTBO, MTBF, TET, BPR etc etc. or Chinese programs are so secretive that even you don't know? Without details, this thread is just a waste of time. What's the point of declaring yourself world class based on some grainy pictures?

I am counting projects too not just petals ;)

We can look at the most widely Chinese turbofan, the WS-10, for more detail.

WS-10 is a heavy engine that has variants powering hundreds of J-10s, J-11s, J-16 and J-20s. There are WS-10s in prototypes of new J-15 variants.

It has improved year after year and put in many more types planes of plane!

  • WS-10 - base variant
  • WS-10A – improved variant with FADEC;[3]advertised to have 120–140 kilonewtons (27,000–31,000 lbf) of thrust[1]
  • WS-10B – improved variant with greater reliability and thrust; based on the WS-10A[23]
  • WS-10B-3 – TVC variant[21]
  • WS-10C – "Updated"[24] variant with stealthier sawtooth exhaust feathers[21]and improved thrust of 142 kilonewtons (32,000 lbf).[25]
  • WS-10G – thrust vectoring variant[26]generating 152–155 kilonewtons (34,000–35,000 lbf) of thrust during testing;[3]intended for the Chengdu J-20[26]
  • WS-20 – high-bypass derivative for the Y-20 transport; 138 kilonewtons (31,000 lbf) of thrust[19]

The WS-15 will replace it as the heavy engine in the J-20.

There are turbofan projects for medium engine -- WS-13 and WS-19 -- as well as light engine for trainers. We have high bypass engines for transports and civil airliners.

So many kinds of turbofans! Just a dozen years ago, China had only one turbofan for its frontline military aircraft -- WS-9 for the JH-7. Now there are 8 major ones -- WS-11, WS-17, WS-18, WS-20, WS-10, WS-15, WS-13 and WS-19.

Definitely improvement at lightning speed. Well, for Chinese anyways. Maybe Indians are faster. How many engine projects India has? :)

As entire world knows we have kaveri project where as per past info only 9 engines were made
It sucks me a lot, many issues were there many issues solved and few issues remaining
And at this point u can be happy of not having Indian democratic republic bureaucracy
Our establishment literally sat from 2004-2014 on this issue only few secretive work was going on but literally no urgency bcoz the govt was lethargic and too weak
Now it's again in great Indian trails after 2-3 years u could see it's dry variant in our ghatak ucav
Then another 110kn class engine which needs some foreign consultations but not yet decided
For more info pls visit kaveri or tejas thread
There was also an option for building al-31 type ganga engine but govt said no
Truly sucks while writing this
Where is copium

Good luck with Kaveri and your 110kN engines!

Kaveri is equivalent of the WS-13. Uprated WS-13E will most likely be the interim engine for J-35. WS-13 was tested on FC-1 and J-17.

WS-19 is China's 110kN engine and will be the ultimate engine on J-35.

So Kaveri/Indian 110kN engines for Indian 5th gen fighter and WS-13E/WS-19 for J-35 would be a lot fun for us to watch together in coming years!
