In what will be a major boost to self-reliance for military equipment, the Ministry of Defence is set to give permission for procurement of the first lot of 40 artillery guns made by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with two Indian manufacturers.

The guns called the Advance Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) performed “very well” in winter trials in Sikkim last week.

So they have already finalised the design and the shipyard for this project?

Also, what does that ARDE label on the SRGM mean? Are we not using a license-built Oto Merla for this one? DId ARDE come up with its own main gun?

Drdo can fool the ignorant politicians and bureaucrats but seriously using the FREMM frigate model , I guess they think ordinary Indians are way too stupid.

Can't they atleast come up with a generic model of their own

Not a desi Popeye but a desi Kh-38ME. A new variant of Kh-38M was unveiled at MAKS 2017. It featured clipped delta wings of increased length but shorter span to enable internal carriage by PAK-FA.

The Kh-38M weighs 520 kgs and is 4200 mm long. It has a range of 40 km . Seems our NASM-SR will have a similar or slightly lower range of 30-35 km with a lower weight warhead since it weighs only 350 kgs.

There is a Longer ranged NASM in development. The missile will remain the same,only a longer length booster in place of the presnt short booster is going to be used.Thus the missile is modular and will offer a great deal of flexibility.

The most important aspect of this missile will be its seeker. Whether DRDO will use a 3rd gen IIR seeker with built in auto target track and recognition capabilities like that of the Rafael Spike LR-2 or a tri mode seeker with a mmw active+IIR+semi active laser like that of Boeing SDB-53 remains to be seen. Also having this type of low Aspect ratio ,reduced width wings will help in internal carriage.

It can be used with our very Su-57MKI and the upcoming Ghatak UCAV and AMCA . Future proof.
