Interdiffusion is very harmful to crystalline structures. TGO layer is formed due to the oxidation of bond coat layer. In the initial stage, outward diffusion of elements from the bond coat and inward diffusion of oxygen from hot gas, the formation of TGO is dominated by a combined mechanism of external oxidation and internal oxidation. The TGO mainly consists of spinel phases, which are, thermodynamically unstable and detrimental to oxidation resistance. So at a high temperature due to interdiffusion of oxygen between substrate and TBC, the superalloy erodes. Basically prevention of erosion is on the agenda

Ok since you are the propulsion expert. Question to you : Why would someone want a bondcoatless TBC wouldn't a bondcoat be more useful in supressing TGO layer ?
