Dhanush heads for summer trials

Calcutta, March 18: Dhanush, a derivative of the Bofors gun, has cleared the winter trials in Sikkim and is headed for a final round of tests in the Rajasthan deserts this summer.

If it clears the last round of trials on accuracy, range and rate of fire, it could find its way into the Indian army by year-end.

Work on version 2 of the Dhanush was also under way, officials said. "The sub-systems for this product are being developed and once this gun fires successfully, work on the next-generation Dhanush would gather momentum."

Gen VK Singh in a recent Interview with MoneyControl

"The problem is with your procedures. Let me give you one simple example. We made a gun, which we called the Indian field gun, an excellent in the gun, in the Jabalpur coach factory. In last 25 years, you haven't made a single gun. Why? Because the procedure says Indian army has not ordered more guns, "Hey guys, why were you sleeping? Why didn't you upgrade yourself to make something else?" Today, we won't have been looking for a 155mm if this gun coach factory along with the DRDO, along with the armed forces, sat down and had made or taken a stride in making a 155 caliber gun. So, the basic mentality has to be changed."

This was my gut feeling for many years abt defence research in india, which i was not able to express clearly in words. Defence research in India, when successful (Naval Projects, IAF Avionics) has followed an approach , more or less as suggested by the General above. So, maybe, for successful defense product realization, all concerned parties should be involved with the project, and a Heavyweight and Influential Project leader (who signs ACR or decides bonus, has authority to hire and fire team members from that particular project) should be selected. Japanese companies have concept called as "Cross Functional Team" and a position known as "Project Leader" who directly reports to the CEO. An example is the recent OFB 155mm 45 Cal Project, where, after Summer trials were passed , if the team had a structure as suggested by Gen VKS above, small no. of guns like 18-24 nos / 3-4 batteries can be inducted in terrain where the trials were successful, like say Rajasthan sector, and induction in Winter terrain can be differed pending winter trial results. The new guns would complement the existing 105mm and 130mm artillery in desert sector, and no one is suggesting yet that they will replace the Bofors. This approach has also been seen in Navy-DRDO sonar projects, where new developments "complement" the existing hardware, which is often imported. IMHO, such an approach gives an option to field commanders at the grass roots level, who can atleast have some weapon to fire back with, when previously nothing was available.

20 gun order is meaningless. It needs to be 200. IA in total needs 2000 towed ones.

How is IA happy with just 414 new guns. They need more in tracked, wheeled and mounted variants.

can you just read the article fully. 414 can be enough cause they will be operated along west border
.
for east border and himalayas, there will be ultra light howitzer.

In 'Dhanush', Indian Army's Prayers Answered

New Delhi: The Indian Army will soon add the 155-mm artillery gun 'Dhanush' to its firepower - the first such weapon to join its arsenal in nearly three decades - if it clears its final tests at Pokhran in the deserts of Rajasthan.

The gun, a homegrown version of the Swedish Bofors gun, will go through a set of summer trials at the Pokhran firing ranges from Friday, highly placed sources have told NDTV.

The 45-calibre gun built by the Ordnance Factory Board, a defence public sector unit, has gone through winter trials in the high altitudes of Sikkim last year.

The towed artillery gun is based on the design and manufacturing technology provided by Bofors in the late 1980s. If it passes the Pokhran trials, its makers will get the final clearance to manufacture the desi but improved version of the original 39-calibre Bofors gun and fill a critical gap in India's arsenal.

The "Dhanush", with its electronic sighting and laying system for aiming at the target, is said to be a major improvement over the Bofors gun's manual system. More importantly, it is likely to be priced at Rs. 14 crore a piece, less than half the price of a similar gun made abroad.

The Bofors gun has a maximum effective range of 27 km, but sources say the 'Dhanush' can fire a salvo up to 38 km in the plains.

For more than 15 years, the army's plan to modernize its weapons has been mired in delays and allegations of corruption in tendering. At least two foreign manufacturers have been blacklisted.

The army needs over 1,500 towed artillery guns at an estimated cost of over Rs. 10,000 crore, but not a single gun has been inducted since the Bofors gun.

The army has ordered 116 guns from the government's ordnance factory and could increase the order to 416 pieces of artillery. If the trials go off smoothly, the factory plans to double its manufacturing capacity from the current 18 guns a year. :thumb:

'Dhanush' clears Final Trials in Pokhran.

After a three-decade long wait, the Army will soon get to add a 155-mm artillery gun, with the Ordnance Factory-built 'Dhanush' successfully clearing its final trials on Friday at Khetolai in Pokhran close to the border along Pakistan in Rajasthan's desert.
