One question:

Has there been any economic feasibility study conducted on this project versus, say, the 30,000 Km of HSR that already connects the country, apart from the normal China Railway System, and the massive domestic airline industry?

  • Regular railway system
  • Intra-city metro railway/subway system
  • CRH bullet trains
  • Massive highway transit system
  • Local aviation industry with over 35 airlines
That's what connected the entire China already.

There just seems to be no economic reason for the need to build all this except for vanity reasons at this point as the country is already very, very well connected. Getting more of these projects inside China is only a means and a way to keep the money inside and to keep the whole infrastructure sector chugging.

This is a dangerous trend because if the state corporations running these projects teeter in the future (and they will, without the required profits coming in), everything will shudder.

Nah, they'll just call in their debts from OBOR & snatch territories/assets before that happens! It may still happen of course but the chances are pretty slim as of now.
