The company that played a key role in equipping China's first aircraft carrier is ready to build more "seagoing airbases", its chairman said.

"China is the only one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council not to have an aircraft carrier wholly developed by itself," said Hu Wenming, chairman of China State Shipbuilding Corp.

The company is a major designer and maker of the aeronautical support system for the Liaoning, China's first aircraft carrier, which was refitted from the Soviet Union's Varyag warship.

The Liaoning was commissioned on Sept 25.

"We must enhance our independent weapons and equipment research and production capacity to match the country's clout, and independently build our own aircraft carriers," Hu told China Daily during the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China this month.
--
Hu also said his company is ready to build the vessels for the carrier formation "at any time". Such a formation is generally made up of the carrier itself, destroyers, escorts, supply vessels and submarines, he said.

He revealed that China has recently embarked on its 13th patrol mission in the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters. His company has built 95 percent of the vessels used for such missions over the past few years. The CEO said he believed the purpose of weapons and equipment development is to preserve international peace so that the country can secure economic and social growth.
-
"Likewise, developing aircraft carriers and other new-generation armament for the navy is tailored for the country's defense and the need to protect marine rights and interests."

In building vessels for civilian use, amid a global downturn in shipbuilding, Hu said his company is changing course, focusing on the higher-end, value-added vessels and marine engineering facilities.

This currently accounts for only 35 percent of the company's turnover, while those of lower-end contribute to 65 percent.

Hu pledged to complete structural optimization and reverse the proportions by 2015, when his company is expected to become the world's largest shipbuilder.

Given China's world domination spree, China will have to have a whole lot of Carrier based fleets and so its ship building industry will be chock-a-block hands full!

It will require a whole lot of steel and India can make a killing selling iron ore at premium prices.

Considering the scale of Chinese Ship building industry, building two carriers at the same time won't consume much of its capacity. The real limits are technology and budget.

No, it doesn't require a lot of steel but some high-end quality steel, which China already got enough.

china will obviously produce them in large numbers,as its not easy to compete us in quality they will depend on quantity to keep their regional superiority

What other aim would be there in the quest to become a superpower?

What would qualify to be a 'super aircraft carrier'?

One aircraft carrier does not make a Fleet in any case!

China has got steel, but from where they got the iron ore?

Guess.

I don't think we need guess...it's a quite simple fact in china ...

the rank of the Chinese import source country of iron ore

1. Australia
2. Brazil
3. South Africa
4. India (used to rank the 3rd, but slip to the 4th place this year...and before 2008 ,india used to be at the second place on this list ,then india was overtaken by Brazil.)
------------------------------

in Jan-Sep this year, China imported 32.7 million tons iron ore from India...the figure at the same period of last year was 61.7 million tons...the highest yearly figure was 107.05 million tons ,which was recorded in 2009.BTW ,the estimated figure of Imported iron ore this year is 730 million tons

-----------------------
the quality of indian iron core is inferior to those from Brazil and Australia...but it's not the reason of the declined import. some Indian or Indian organization are not willing to export raw material to others with the development of India, saying that it hurts Great India. I thought you should have read such news .

well, the AC with a displacement of 80K tons might be called "super AC", IMO.
now, only USA has super AC....

Soviet used to make one Super AC Ulyanovsk, but failed .

China would be the second one which can make SUper AC.

Guess.
well, CHina itself has more iron ore than any other country, except Russa, Brazil and USA....

However, CHinese iron ore are lean ore ...for economic factor, CHina imports rich iron ores from Brazil,Austrialia and India in peace time....

but in war time,CHina lean iron ore still can assure the running of military industry, disspite of high cost.

Good Data and thanks!

If India stop exporting the raw material like iron ore and low end unfinished product like jewellery, there is no way to even has any hope to balance the trade deficit between India & China. At least the call center business can't sell to China.

I went to Shenzhen this month, you know what? I see Tencent ( qq.com ) hiring lots of Indian onsite, working with local R&D team, and lots of them brought whole family there. That's quite interesting trend as far as i know, since i never heard Chinese IT firm especially the Internet firm is hiring foreigners for the local products.

Of course the salary is relatively lower than the domestic employee: on the 2-3 years level of developers, local one get around $USD2000 per month and Indian employee got around $1000.

India did not slip into the 4th place.

We restricted the export and insisted that no more would India give a cheap handout.

If China continues to antagonise its neighbours, the ore shall dry up world over.

58,500 tonnes of coincidence

................A fairly small carrier fitted with a "ski jump" ramp rather than a catapult, the Liaoning is no match for America's Nimitz-class supercarriers, which are almost double the displacement, let alone the new Ford-class ships, the first of which is expected to enter service in 2015. Nor does China yet have any fast jets to fly from the Liaoning. The Shenyang J-15, a not entirely convincing copy of Russia's Sukhoi S-33, has flown, but is unlikely to enter service until 2016.............

As a military threat to America, the Liaoning is therefore negligible and that will remain true even when it is joined over the next 15 years by two indigenously-built carriers that have been modelled on it.

So much for Chinese super carriers!

~Not only iron ore but also stopping the cheap chinese products coming to Indian mkts.

~it is the otherway around. Chinese labours are cheaper than Indians. Compare them, you can get details.

But any good idea for India to balance the trade deficit to China? Since GOI is always murmuring it:

New Delhi is frustrated that trade talks launched when Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited India in late 2010 haven't yielded significant benefits. India's trade deficit with China jumped 42% to nearly $40 billion in the last fiscal year ended March 31, and was the largest contributor to the country's overall gap between exports and imports.

One of the ways to do away with more trade deficits is to stop importing Chinese goods.

We have seen the massive failure of the Chinese electrical machinery in North India!

Agreed that Chinese goods are sold at rock bottom prices, but the experience has been that India buying second rate products from China hits the rock bottom!

Even Pakistan, the staunch ally of China, has learnt a lesson with Chinese locomotives which were all duff and so they had to get Indian locos, a country that Pakistan does not have very cordial relationship!

Imagine the desperation of Pakistan and the total lack of confidence with Chinese products!

But then, once again you veered off to the irrelevant and so I answered.

The topic is on Chinese aircraft carriers and allied issues, in case you have forgotten!

OK, i confess that i set a trap to you. I knew that on trade deficit topic, you are hardly to reply, and would use "off topic" to escape by the end.

But who started the off topic talk first?

Guess. :toilet:
