I thought heavy combat heli is an out-dated concept since its function can be partially replaced by drones which is safer and cheaper.

I haven't followed China's defense news for such a long time since my interest has shifted to rockets & outer space & Roman history. @SexyChineseLady brought us great updates and I think a new thread should be created for China's new heavy combat helicopter.

The concept probably is. But the Z-20 is in major mass production and this is a logical step which probably doesn't entail too much cost since the base is already set up.

J-20 mass production has reached a point where they are re-equipting remaining J-7 squadrons with it! Imagine going from the J-7G to the J-20!
