India successfully test-fires BrahMos cruise missile with extended strike range of 450 km

India on Wednesday successfully test-fired the surface-to-surface supersonic cruise missile BrahMos with indigenous components for an extended range from a land based platform off the Odisha coast. The missile deployed in full operational configuration blasted off from launching complex-III of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at about 10.30 am and met all mission parameters as expected. Defence sources said the missile — an Indo-Russian joint venture — was put to trial with indigenous booster, airframe section, propulsion system, power supply and many other major components. The test jointly conducted by DRDO and BrahMos Aerospace for an extended range of 450 km has paved the way for the serial production of the indigenous booster and other indigenous components of the powerful weapon system realising the Atmanirbhar Bharat pledge. “It is one more major step in enhancing the indigenous content. The BrahMos land-attack cruise missile was cruising at a top speed of Mach 2.8. The missile has proved its prowess once again as the best supersonic cruise system in the world,” said a senior defence official. Although the land-attack version of the missile has been operationalised in the Indian Army since 2007, this test validated the indigenous components incorporated to achieve higher strike range. The extended-range version of BrahMos was developed after India’s full membership to the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), which removed caps on the range of the cruise missile. The strike range of the missile has been enhanced from 290 km to 450 km. “The changes in the engine and fuel system give it additional capabilities of going much beyond its earlier range of 290 km. We are testing the capabilities of flying the missile at a higher altitude so that it can achieve more range as the friction in air is much less,” the official informed. The nine-metre long two-stage missile is capable of carrying a conventional warhead weighing up to 300 kg. The BrahMos missile has three versions – land, ship and air. It can effectively engage targets from an altitude as low as 10 metres for surgical strikes at terror training camps across the border without causing collateral damage. “With an extended range, the world’s best cruise missile in its class can now change the dynamics of conventional warfare. Its range, speed and stealth capabilities can be enhanced further as per the requirement of the armed forces,” the official added. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and DRDO Chairman Dr G Satheesh Reddy congratulated DRDO personnel, team BrahMos and the industry for the spectacular mission.

Range is around 650 km
It depends on the trajectory. In terrain-following mode the range will be less. But you are right: In a high altitude trajectory the range is 650 km. They are increasing both the range and the speed further, as well as making it more stealthy.

range is effected by angle of trajectory only for ballistic/quasi ballistic missiles and not for cruise missiles. brahmos is a cruise missile.

I was wrong. The range of Brahmos will be over 800 km after the range extension program is complete. Makes sense, because it's based on the Russian P-800 Oniks, and that missile's Oniks-M version already has a range of 800 km. Meanwhile they are making Brahmos even faster and more efficient, so Shiv Aroor is right in that the ultimate range will be over 800 km after the range/speed extension program is completed.

BrahMos missile test-fired from destroyer INS Chennai in Arabian Sea

India on Sunday successfully test fired the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from the indigenously-built stealth destroyer INS Chennai, with the weapon hitting a pre-designated target in the Arabian Sea, the defence ministry said in a statement. The 290-km range missile — an Indo-Russian joint venture — has land, air and naval variants. “The missile hit the target with pin-point accuracy after performing high-level and extremely complex manoeuvres. BrahMos as prime strike weapon will ensure the warship’s invincibility by engaging naval surface targets at long ranges, thus making the destroyer another lethal platform of Indian Navy,” it said. The missile has a top speed of Mach 2.8 — nearly three times the speed of sound. Defence minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the Defence Research and Development Organisation, BrahMos and the Indian Navy for the successful launch. India has test-fired a string of weapons during the last two months in the midst of the ongoing tensions with China in the sensitive Ladakh sector. Sunday’s test came days after India test-fired an extended-range BrahMos supersonic cruise missile that can hit targets 400 km away. The range has been increased from the existing 290 km. The extended-range variant was tested from the Integrated Test Range at Balasore in Odisha on September 30. The configuration of the existing missile — the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missile — has been tweaked to enhance its range. Increasing the missile’s range became possible after India’s induction into the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) in June 2016. Commissioned into the navy in November 2016, the 7,500-tonne INS Chennai incorporates new design concepts for improved survivability, stealth and manoeuvrability. The warship can carry 16 BrahMos missiles in two eight-cell vertical launch systems, besides other sophisticated weapons and sensors, officials said. Other weapons recently tested by India include a new version of the nuclear-capable hypersonic Shaurya missile with a range of 750 km and the anti-radiation missile to take down enemy radars and surveillance systems.

The range of Brahmos is set to increase to more than 800 km after speed and range enhancements similiar to the Oniks-M, the Russian version of Brahmos. The Oniks-M, on which Brahmos is based, already has a range of 800 km.

BrahMos-2 to be powered by Scramjet Propulsion System developed by DRDO: CEO & MD, BrahMos

In an exclusive interview with livefistdefence.com, Dr. Sudhir Kumar Mishra, CEO & MD, BrahMos Aerospace has made an interesting revelation, that the Hypersonic version of the BrahMos-2 will be based on the Scramjet Propulsion System developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation when it is ready to be incorporated into the BrahMos-2 airframe. BrahMos-2, a Hypersonic Cruise missile was to be based on Indo-Russian technology like how the present, BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missiles that were developed from 2001 have been. Indigenous Indian content in a BrahMos missile over the years has now moved to 65%, but it still has 35% Russian content like its Mach 3 capable ramjet engine that is license manufactured in India with Russian RAW Materials. Initially, RF monopulse seeker equipped on the Brahmos production units, along with the second stage Scramjet engine and first stage Booster rocket was of Russian Origin. But in new fresh trials, BrahMos featured indigenous booster, indigenous radio frequency (RF) seeker, and several indigenous sub-systems that will be cleared in production units once they are tested and certified in near future. Like How, the Russian 3M55 P-800 Oniks (Onyx) anti-ship missile, was used as a technical base upon which BrahMos missile was developed, BrahMos-2 was seen as a Russian 3M22 Zircon missile derivative, upon which it was to be used as a technical base again for the development of the new Hypersonic cruise missile and also Mockups of the BrahMos-2 displayed by BrahMos Aerospace was near identical to 3M22 Zircon missile and both missile also shared many similarities. idrw.org was one of the first to confirm the development of two variants of BrahMos-2 missile that will be achieved by further development of the present ramjet engine to achieve a Mach 4.5-5 speed keeping it technically just under Hypersonic flight regime, while the second variant will have Hypersonic speeds of over Mach 7 and will be powered by a new scramjet engine to be developed by 2030. There has been media speculation that Russia has been non-committal on the transfer of transfer Hypersonic weapons systems like 3M22 Zircon missile derivatives or its scramjet engine to India after, Several think tanks and Military planners have been urging the United States, Russia, and China (the Big Three) to take their first mover’s advantage and put in technical barriers by agreeing to embargo complete hypersonic missiles and their major components to other countries. BrahMos-2 if it is powered by an indigenous Scramjet Propulsion System developed by the DRDO will mean a smaller role of Russia in its development or it will be limited to a few subsystems or Russia will completely exit from the program.

India test-fires land-attack version of BrahMos missile: Report
India on Tuesday test-fired a land attack version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, news agency ANI reported quoting sources. “India today test-fired a land attack version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands territory. The target of the missile was on another island there. More details awaited,” reported ANI.

“The supersonic cruise missile was testfired at 10 AM today and it successfully hit its target. The test was conducted by the Indian Army which has many regiments of the DRDO-developed Missile system. The strike range of BrahMos missile has now been enhanced to over 400 km,” it said further quoting sources.

This development comes amid reports India will carry out “multiple live tests” of the supersonic missile this week amid ongoing tensions across both the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China and, in recent days, the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan. In fact, as of last month, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) had test-fired at least 10 missiles in just 35 days. One of those was BrahMos itself, which was test-fired from INS Chennai on October 18.

BrahMos Aerospace is a joint venture between the DRDO and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya and was established on February 12,1998. Its name is a combination of India’s Brahmaputra and Russia’s Moskva rivers. The BrahMos is a medium-range supersonic cruise missile which can be launched from submarine, ships, aircraft or land. It is the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missile, as well as the fastest anti-ship cruise missile in operation.

BrahMos-II, a hypersonic version of the missile, is also currently under development.
