I never thought that brahmos fly without after burner to the target. It is shown for the first time :cool2:
Can someone explain a bit more on it.

I think it might have dropped a motor(red arrow), stalled a bit then flew/ float towards target without after burner then ignited the after burners during rest of its flight so and so forth.

India test-fires BrahMos missile with new systems
Published July 29, 2012 | By admin
SOURCE: PTI

In a bid to enhance indigenous missile manufacturing capabilities, India today successfully test-fired the 290-km range BrahMos supersonic cruise missile from the integrated test range at Chandipur off Odisha coast.

The 32nd test-firing was part of the development trials of the missile which has already been inducted into the Army and the Navy.

The objective of the mission was to evaluate some of the newer subsystems which are produced from the Indian industry as part of production stabilisation, BrahMos officials said, adding more than 25 such systems were incorporated in the development missile.

The launch was primarily aimed at testing the new power systems, materials for airframe components, guidance scheme and various electric systems, they said.

The data obtained from the test-firing is being analysed for large-scale production by Indian industries, they said.

"It was an experimental flight and the missile was tested successfully," ITR Director MVKV Prasad said....

The Defence Ministry has also given a go-ahead to Army to induct a third regiment equipped with the missile system to be deployed in Arunachal Pradesh along the China border...

The last trial of Brahmos was conducted successfully on March 28, 2012 from the same base.India test-fires BrahMos missile with new systems | idrw.org

BrahMos, India's supersonic cruise missile, failed in its flight on July 29, 2012. Informed sources said BrahMos developed "some problems" during its flight and "it deviated from its path." It could not travel its full range of 290 km and fell into the Bay of Bengal. A committee has been set up to analyse the telemetry. "It is not a serious problem in the system. The failure perhaps had something to do with production, with the indigenisation process," the sources said.

A press release on that day, however, did not mention that BrahMos had failed in its flight. It merely said the 32 flight test of BrahMos took place at 10.30 a.m. from a test range at Chandipur, off the Odisha coast, as part of the development trials. The objective of the mission was to evaluate some of the newer sub-systems which were produced by the Indian industry as part of the product stabilisation, it said. More than 25 such systems were incorporated in the missile. BrahMos, which carries conventional warheads, has already been inducted into the Army and the Navy. The missile travels at 2.8 times the speed of sound.

Why the false news then?

Its okay if it fails in testing, but shouldn't fail while actually using it ;)

new things were tested from domestically made parts, looks like those desi companies are going to be spanked for giving faulty parts.

Next BrahMos missile targets Mach 7 - India - DNA

The chief executive officer of BrahMos Aerospace, A Sivathanu Pillai, on Friday said the next target of the Indo-Russian joint venture is to develop a hypersonic cruise missile with a speed of Mach 7.

While delivering the 26th CSIR NAL Foundation Day lecture on self-reliance in aerospace technologies, Pillai said the missile would fly at seven times the speed of sound.

"We are venturing into the hypersonic world where speed is the power. We want to reach Mach 7," he said.

The Centre of Excellence in High Speed Aerodynamics at the Indian Institute of Science and the Moscow Aviation Institute will play a key role in the research and development of the missile.

The present BrahMos which is the only supersonic cruise missile in service has been inducted into the Indian Navy and Army. It has a range of 300km and can fly at a speed of Mach 3. The hypersonic version will have a scramjet engine in place of a ramjet.

Pillai added that while a submarine version of the BrahMos is under development, work on the air launch version for the Indian Air Force, to be fit on the Sukhoi-30 MKI aircraft, has been completed.

"The missile is ready, once the modification on the Sukhoi-30 MKI's is completed trials would be carried out," Pillai added.

On the export prospects of the BrahMos, Pillai said the missile is a globally competitive product and many countries have expressed their interest for the product.

The Indo-Russian joint venture was setup with an investment of $300 million with 50.5 % funding coming from India and 49.5 % from Russia. "We have so far made a business of $4 billion and expect to make about $10 billion," Pillai said.

The government is set to approve an over Rs 6,500 crore. The project seeks to mount the missile on 42 Sukhoi fighters, and includes 216 air-version missiles.

The air-launched missile system would significantly add to the conventional offensive capabilities of Indian military might, while intensifying arms race in the region.

The proposal is being moved in the wake of feasibility studies proving that the air-launched version of the cruise missile can successfully be mounted on the Russian made fighter, and can be fired to lethal effect. The government proposes to develop two prototypes of Sukhoi-30MKI fighters fitted with the missile for field trials in the project's first phase.

Once the two prototypes complete a series of field trials, another 40 of the Sukhoi-30MKI fighters would be fitted with the missile in India, a senior official said.

Some modifications to the fuselage of the fighter are required to accommodate the nine-meter-long missile, sources said. Brahmos Aerospace is believed to have developed an air version of the missile, which is lighter than the other variants and has additional rear fins for aerodynamic stability.

Sources said the entire project would be executed in India by Brahmos Aerospace and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), with Russia providing design and technical consultancy. Brahmos Aerospace is a joint venture between India's DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyenia.

The two-stage missile, with a solid propellant booster engine in the first phase and a liquid ramjet in the second stage, is among the world's fastest missiles, and its developers claim it to be the only supersonic cruise missile in the world. With a deadly accuracy and no effective counter to it, Brahmos is a potent force for Indian armed forces.

Brahmos already has land and naval versions, which are successfully commissioned by the Army and the Navy. A submarine version of the missile is under development. Brahmos Aerospace CEO A Sivathanu Pillai has spoken about the efforts to develop a hypersonic version of the missile.

Test Failure of Cruise Missile Brahmos

Recently, on 29th July 2012, a developmental flight test was carried out from Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur with 25 new components and subsystems produced in India substituting those made from Russia. In this test, except for one subsystem, all other subsystems and components have performed to the requirement.

Malfunction of one subsystem resulted in increase in velocity of the missile, crossing the limit and leading to aborting the mission. The defect has been rectified after analysis. Further development flight tests will be conducted as a measure of self-reliance.

This information was given by Defence Minister Shri AK Antony in a written reply to Shri Anil Desai in Rajya Sabha today.

Brahmos UCAV variant

BrahMos II

A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, an aerospace engineer and former President of India, asked the BrahMos Aerospace to develop an advanced version of the BrahMos cruise missile to maintain India's lead in the field. He stated:[79]

" You should develop a hypersonic version of BrahMos which can be reused [...] meaning that the missile should be able to deliver its payload and return to base. This will help in maintaining our leadership in this arena. "
This would turn Brahmos into an UCAV.

Reusable hypersonic BRAHMOS should be developed: Dr. Kalam

NEW DELHI (BNS): A hypersonic variant of BRAHMOS cruise missile system should be developed that can be reused, former President of India, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam suggested on Sunday.

Addressing an event to mark 10 glorious years of first supersonic launch of the BRAHMOS cruise missile, Dr. Kalam said, "BRAHMOS will graduate to hypersonic cruise missile"¦ it should be a reusable hypersonic cruise missile, meaning that it would return to its base after delivering the payload."

Plans are going on to develop the advanced version of the weapon system that can travel at a speed of Mach 5 to 7. The new missile, to be called BRAHMOS II, will be smaller than the original BRAHMOS.

Speaking on the occasion, A Sivathanu Pillai, CEO & MD of BrahMos Aerospace - the JV company between India and Russia - described BRAHMOS as "an unparalleled system."

"Its speed, precision and devastating power in destroying the target made the weapon unparalleled. Its competitor is yet to born," he said.

India and Russia set up the JV through an Inter-Governmental Agreement signed on February 12, 1998 to jointly design, develop, produce and market the BRAHMOS missile system.

On the joint partnership, Dr. Pillai said, "The JV has become a symbol of Indo-Russian friendship and also changed the minds of the developed countries in the dynamics of war itself."

Governor of Chhattisgarh and former Defence Secretary of India, Shekhar Dutt, who was also present during the event, said that BRAHMOS today has carved a niche for itself after a decade of journey.

"The formation of the company set an example of integration of jointly developed high technology military products and its promotion in the world defence market. Both the product and the JV company have established a unique status in the world with a brand," he said.

The BRAHMOS programme achieved its first milestone when the supersonic cruise missile system was successfully test-fired for the first time from Chadipur, Orissa on June 12, 2001.

The missile has already been inducted in the Indian Army and Navy while the air-launched version it set to be test-flown next year.
